The Night of Rejection
Every werewolf dreamed of finding their fated mate. Lyra Ashwood prayed she wouldn't. Not because she feared love, but because hope had become too expensive. In Blackwood Pack, hope belonged to the powerful. For an omega like her, it was something she had buried years ago, together with the childish belief that the Moon Goddess had a place for her. The Silver Moon hung high above the ancient stone arena, bathing the kingdom in soft silver light. Tonight was the Moon Mating Ceremony—the holiest night of the year. It was the night the Moon Goddess revealed the mates she had chosen long before birth. Some wolves would leave the arena with joyful hearts. Others would leave with shattered dreams. Lyra had already accepted which group she belonged to. She stood quietly near the back of the gathering while noble families chatted excitedly around her. Servants hurried past carrying trays of wine and roasted meat, and young she-wolves admired one another's dresses as they whispered about which Alpha might become their destined mate. Lyra simply watched. Her plain white dress had been handed down from another servant years ago. Though she had carefully mended every tear she could find, the faded fabric still betrayed its age. At least it's clean, she thought, smoothing the wrinkles from the skirt. "Watch where you're standing, Omega." A sharp shoulder slammed into hers. Lyra staggered before catching her balance. Vanessa Black stood before her with a satisfied smile. As the Beta's daughter, she carried herself as though the entire kingdom already belonged to her. Her eyes slowly swept over Lyra's dress before she laughed. "I almost mistook you for someone important." The girls behind her burst into laughter. "I heard the Moon Goddess only blesses real wolves," one mocked. Another grinned. "Then who do you think she'll choose for Lyra?" Vanessa pretended to consider the question. "The stable dog seems lonely." More laughter erupted. Lyra lowered her eyes without saying a word. She had learned long ago that silence hurt less than arguing. To everyone in Blackwood Pack, she was cursed. At twenty-one years old, she had never awakened her wolf. Not once. Children whispered about her. Adults pitied her. Some even believed the Moon Goddess had abandoned her before she was born. A gentle hand rested on her shoulder. "Ignore them." Lyra turned and smiled faintly. "Nora." Her only true friend. "They're just jealous," Nora said. Lyra laughed quietly. "Jealous of what?" "Your heart." Seeing Lyra's confusion, Nora smiled. "They've spent their lives looking down on others. You've spent yours surviving. Somehow, after everything they've done to you, you're still kind." For the first time that evening, Lyra smiled without forcing it. Before she could answer, the sound of a great horn rolled across the valley. Every conversation stopped. Silence settled over the arena. The massive iron gates slowly opened. Royal guards marched in first, their black armor gleaming beneath the moonlight. Behind them walked the High Elders, their robes embroidered with ancient lunar symbols. Then he appeared. Alpha King Kael Draven. Tall. Broad-shouldered. Dressed in black ceremonial robes trimmed with silver. His presence alone silenced the entire arena. Stories about Kael had spread far beyond the Seven Kingdoms. Some called him the strongest Alpha in history. Others claimed he had never smiled since ascending the throne. Lyra had always assumed those stories were exaggerated.Until now. Without realizing it, she looked up. At the exact same moment, Kael's silver eyes swept across the crowd. Their gazes met. A strange flutter stirred inside her chest before disappearing as quickly as it had come. "Rise." His deep voice carried effortlessly across the arena. Everyone obeyed. The High Priest stepped into the center of the arena, raising an ancient Moonstone crystal toward the glowing Silver Moon. "By the blessing of the Moon Goddess," he declared, "let every soul destined to walk together find one another beneath her eternal light." The crystal glowed. One by one, names were called. Each time two destined mates were revealed, silver light briefly connected them before fading away. Cheers echoed throughout the arena as couples embraced while their families celebrated around them. Lyra smiled for them. Even if she had long stopped believing such happiness could ever belong to her. Then the High Priest called her name. "Lyra Ashwood." The whispers began immediately. "The cursed omega?" "Does she even have a wolf?" "This should be interesting." Ignoring them, Lyra stepped into the center of the arena. Every step felt heavier than the last. The High Priest frowned. The Moonstone had begun to vibrate. "...Strange." The vibration grew stronger. His eyes widened. "I've never seen this before..." Without warning, the crystal erupted with brilliant silver light. Gasps filled the arena. Several elders stumbled backward in shock. Before anyone could speak, a sharp pain tore through Lyra's chest. She gasped, clutching at her heart as her knees nearly gave way. Her pulse thundered. Heat spread through every part of her body. Then one word echoed inside her soul. Mate. Slowly... Almost afraid of what she would find... Lyra lifted her eyes. Across the arena, Alpha King Kael Draven was already staring at her.His expression froze. For the first time in years, the feared Alpha King looked genuinely shocked. The mate bond had formed. For a heartbeat, the entire arena remained silent. Then whispers spread through the crowd. "The Alpha King's mate?" "That's impossible." "The Moonstone must be wrong." Lyra stood rooted to the spot, unable to breathe. Her heart pounded so hard it drowned out every sound around her. This couldn't be happening. Not to her. Not to the orphan everyone despised. Not to the omega the pack believed had been abandoned by the Moon Goddess. Kael descended the stone steps from the royal platform. Every measured step echoed across the arena, and the crowd instinctively moved aside to clear a path for their king. He stopped only a few feet away. Up close, Lyra could see the storm hidden behind his silver eyes. There was shock, disbelief... and something else she couldn't understand. It vanished almost as quickly as it appeared. The High Priest smiled, relief washing over his weathered face. "Your Majesty, the Moon Goddess has revealed your destined Luna." Several elders bowed in respect. Everything was unfolding exactly as tradition demanded. The Alpha King would acknowledge the bond, the kingdom would celebrate, and in time a new Queen would rise beside him. That was how it had always been. The invisible bond between them pulsed again. Inside Kael's mind, his wolf stirred. She is ours. His jaw tightened. Another memory forced its way into his thoughts. A dim chamber lit by blue flames. An ancient prophet kneeling before him. "Beware the wolf marked beneath the Silver Moon. If she ever sits beside you as Queen, your bloodline will perish, the Seven Kingdoms will burn, and your crown will turn to ash." For years, those words had haunted him. He had searched every royal family, every rival kingdom, expecting danger to come from a powerful bloodline. Instead... It stood before him wearing a faded white dress. His wolf growled again. The prophecy is wrong. Claim her. Kael forced the voice into silence. A king could not rule by instinct alone. Lyra looked up at him with uncertain hope. It was only a small smile, fragile and hesitant, but it struck him harder than any weapon ever had. His wolf howled. Don't do this. The High Priest cleared his throat. "Your Majesty... the Moon Goddess awaits your acceptance." Silence stretched between them. Kael closed his eyes for a brief moment. When he opened them again, every trace of hesitation had disappeared. Only the king remained. "I refuse." The words were quiet. But they shattered the arena. The High Priest stared at him in disbelief. "Your... Your Majesty?" "I refuse this bond." Gasps erupted from every corner of the gathering. "No Alpha King has ever rejected a fated mate," one elder whispered. Nora's face turned pale. Even Vanessa looked stunned. Lyra felt the hope inside her c***k. The High Priest stepped forward urgently. "Your Majesty, this is the Moon Goddess's will. You must reconsider." "My decision is final." His voice carried across the arena with icy certainty. He stepped closer until only a breath separated him from Lyra. She could barely breathe. Please... Don't. For the first time, his voice softened enough that only she could hear. "The Moon Goddess may have chosen you..." His gaze lingered on hers for a single painful moment. "...but you will never be my Queen." Something inside Lyra broke. Kael straightened and faced the crowd. "I, Alpha King Kael Draven... reject Lyra Ashwood as my mate." The words echoed beneath the Silver Moon. Agony exploded through Lyra's body. She cried out as the bond snapped, dropping to her knees. It felt as if someone had reached into her chest and torn away part of her soul. A burst of silver light flashed between them before vanishing into the night. Then came the laughter. "The Alpha King rejected her!" "I knew she wasn't worthy!" "How could a cursed omega ever become Luna?" Each word cut deeper than the last. Nora rushed to her side and wrapped an arm around her trembling shoulders. "Lyra..." Tears streamed down Nora's face, but Lyra couldn't answer. She stared blankly at the cold stone beneath her knees, struggling to breathe through the pain crushing her chest. Vanessa walked over with a triumphant smile. "I almost believed fate had lost its mind," she said. "Turns out even the Alpha King knows where you belong." Nora stood, fury burning in her eyes. "Leave her alone." Vanessa only laughed before turning away. Kael remained where he stood. His fists were clenched so tightly that blood seeped from his palms. Inside his mind, his wolf roared in fury. What have you done? She is our mate! Kael didn't answer. Go back. Take back your words. His breathing grew heavier. For one dangerous second... He almost turned around. Then the prophet's warning echoed through his mind once more. "Everything you love will perish." His expression hardened. "I have made my choice." His wolf let out a broken, grief-filled howl. Several elders exchanged uneasy glances. "I've never heard an Alpha's wolf cry like that," one whispered. Above the arena, dark clouds slowly drifted across the Silver Moon. A cold wind swept through the gathering, extinguishing several torches. The oldest elder looked toward the sky. "This rejection has awakened something..." Kael walked away without looking back. The palace gates closed behind him with a thunderous boom. Lyra remained kneeling long after everyone else had fallen silent. She pressed a trembling hand against her chest, where the mate bond had once burned. The pain was still there. So was the emptiness. Slowly, she rose to her feet. No one reached out to help her. No one called her name. With tears blurring her vision, she turned toward the dark forest beyond the arena and began to walk. Behind her, the celebration resumed as though nothing had happened. Ahead of her, the Sacred Moon Forest waited in silence. Hidden somewhere beneath its ancient trees...someone was waiting for her.
