The Enemy From The Past

2502 Words
Elena The name stayed in my head long after Alexander stopped speaking. Daniel Whitmore. A name I had spent years trying not to remember. A name that belonged to a chapter of my life I had forced myself to close. But apparently… The past didn’t care if I was ready to face it. I stood there in Alexander’s office, staring at him, waiting for him to tell me this was some kind of misunderstanding. That there was another Daniel Whitmore. That the universe wasn’t cruel enough to bring the one person who had nearly destroyed my career back into my life. But Alexander’s expression told me the truth. He believed me. And somehow, that scared me more. “You knew him?” His question was quiet. Too quiet. I swallowed. “Not personally.” Alexander studied my face. “But you know who he is.” I looked away. “Yes.” He leaned against the edge of his desk, crossing his arms. “Tell me everything.” My fingers tightened. “I already told you what happened.” “No.” His voice was firm. “You told me what happened from your perspective.” I looked at him. “What’s the difference?” “The difference is that you’re still protecting yourself from the memory.” Those words hit somewhere deep. Because he was right. I hated that he was right. “I was assigned to his rehabilitation after his injury,” I began. My voice was softer now. “Daniel was a star player. Everyone expected him to be one of the greatest. He had talent, confidence…” I paused. “Maybe too much confidence.” A small frown appeared on Alexander’s face. “What do you mean?” “He didn’t listen.” The words came slowly. “He ignored instructions. He pushed his body before it was ready. He wanted to return to the ice immediately because he was afraid of losing his position.” Alexander nodded slightly. That was something every athlete understood. The fear of being replaced. “The injury should have healed,” I continued. “His scans showed improvement. His strength was coming back.” “Then what happened?” I looked down. “He went back too soon.” Silence. “And he got injured again.” Alexander’s jaw tightened. “And he blamed you.” I nodded. “At first, he blamed himself.” My voice lowered. “But then people started asking questions.” The memories came rushing back. The reporters. The accusations. The whispers. The emails. The comments online. The way strangers who had never met me decided they knew exactly who I was. “His team needed someone to blame.” Alexander’s eyes darkened. “And they chose you.” “Yes.” A painful silence filled the room. Then Alexander spoke. “Why didn’t you tell me?” I looked at him. “What?” “Why didn’t you tell me this before?” My heart tightened. Because the answer was simple. Because I was afraid. But saying that out loud felt impossible. “I didn’t think it mattered.” Alexander gave a humorless laugh. “Someone from your past is attacking you, Elena. Someone who clearly has access to my private information because of you.” The words stung. Not because he meant to hurt me. But because they were true. “I didn’t want you to see me differently.” His expression changed. “What?” I looked away. “You’re Alexander Blackwood.” A bitter smile touched my lips. “You have everything. The money. The success. The respect.” I swallowed. “And I’m the woman who almost lost everything because of one mistake.” His eyes narrowed. “That’s what you think?” I didn’t answer. “Look at me.” I hesitated. “Elena.” Slowly, I looked up. His eyes were intense. “You think I see you as a mistake?” I stayed silent. “That’s ridiculous.” The sharpness in his voice surprised me. “You’re one of the most competent people I’ve ever met.” My breath caught. “You walked into this organization surrounded by people who questioned you, and you proved yourself every single day.” He stepped closer. “You think I didn’t notice?” I couldn’t speak. “You think I didn’t notice how you stayed with injured players after everyone else left?” Another step. “How you learned every player’s medical history because you actually cared?” Another. “How you put everyone else first even when nobody was doing the same for you?” My eyes burned. “Alex…” “No.” His voice softened. “I need you to understand something.” He stopped in front of me. “Your past does not define you.” Those words almost broke me. Because I had spent years believing the opposite. Before I could respond, the office door suddenly opened. Carter walked in. Normally, he would have made a joke about interrupting. This time, he didn’t. “We have a problem.” Alexander immediately turned. “What happened?” Carter looked between us. “The media has it.” My stomach dropped. “What?” “The leaked reports. The messages. Everything.” Alexander’s expression hardened. “How?” “They received an anonymous package.” Carter handed him a tablet. Alexander opened it. I watched his face change as he scrolled. “What is it?” I whispered. He didn’t answer. That scared me. “Alex?” He handed me the tablet. And the second I saw the headline, my entire world stopped. BLACKWOOD WOLVES’ NEW THERAPIST HIDES CAREER-ENDING MISTAKE FROM THE TEAM Below it was my picture. My name. My entire history. Every accusation. Every rumor. Every painful moment I had tried to forget. They had turned my trauma into a story. A headline. A weapon. My hands started shaking. “I’m sorry.” The words left my mouth before I could stop them. Alexander looked at me sharply. “For what?” “For bringing this into your life.” His expression changed instantly. “Don’t.” “I should leave.” “No.” “I can’t let your team suffer because of me.” “Elena.” “I’ll resign.” The silence that followed was terrifying. Alexander stared at me like I had said something impossible. “You’re serious?” I nodded. “If I leave, the attention goes away.” His eyes became colder. “No.” “Alex—” “No.” His voice echoed through the office. “You think I’m going to let someone destroy your career twice?” I froze. He took the tablet from my hands. Then he looked at Carter. “Schedule a press conference.” Carter’s eyes widened. “Alex…” “Today.” “Are you sure?” Alexander looked at me. And in that moment, I saw something I had never seen before. Not the captain. Not the billionaire. Not the Ice King. A man who had made a decision. “Yes.” His voice was calm. “I’m done letting people decide who Elena Whitmore is.” My heart stopped. Because I knew what he was about to do. He was going to stand beside me. Publicly. And Alexander Blackwood didn’t stand beside anyone. Not unless they mattered. Elena I had faced angry patients. I had faced disappointed coaches. I had faced an entire internet community that decided I was a villain without knowing the truth. But nothing terrified me more than standing beside Alexander Blackwood in front of a room full of cameras. Because Alexander wasn’t just a man. He was an empire. Everything he said mattered. Everything he did became news. And now… He was risking his reputation because of me. I stood behind the curtain of the press room, listening to the reporters outside. The noise was overwhelming. Questions. Shouting. Camera shutters. My stomach twisted. “I can’t do this.” The words escaped before I could stop them. Alexander, who was standing beside me adjusting his suit jacket, immediately looked at me. “Yes, you can.” I shook my head. “No, Alex. You don’t understand.” His eyes softened. “I understand more than you think.” “No.” I looked at him. “You don’t understand what it feels like to have thousands of people hate you for something you couldn’t control.” A pause. “To wake up every morning wondering if your entire career is over because of one moment.” Alexander stepped closer. “Elena.” I looked away. “I’m scared.” The honesty surprised both of us. Because I never admitted fear. Not to anyone. But Alexander didn’t judge me. He simply reached out and gently took my hand. The simple action almost destroyed me. Because Alexander Blackwood wasn’t a man who gave comfort easily. But with me… He tried. “You don’t have to be fearless.” His thumb brushed over my knuckles. “You just have to stop fighting alone.” My eyes met his. For a second, the chaos outside disappeared. Then Carter’s voice interrupted. “Guys?” We turned. He looked between us. “The cameras are ready.” Alexander slowly released my hand. But before walking out, he leaned closer. “Stay beside me.” I swallowed. “Alex…” “Please.” That one word. Not an order. Not a command. A request. I nodded. “Okay.” The doors opened. And the world rushed in. Alexander The moment I stepped onto the stage, the room exploded. “Mr. Blackwood, is the leaked medical report authentic?” “Did Elena Whitmore hide information from the team?” “Are you protecting your therapist because of a personal relationship?” My jaw tightened. They weren’t interested in the truth. They wanted a story. A scandal. A headline. I walked to the microphone. “Elena Whitmore has been a valued member of the Blackwood Wolves organization since the day she joined.” The room quieted slightly. “She has demonstrated professionalism, dedication, and an unmatched commitment to our players.” A reporter raised his hand. “But the allegations—” I looked directly at him. “The allegations are based on incomplete information and a deliberate attempt to damage someone’s reputation.” The room erupted again. I continued. “Three years ago, Elena treated an injured athlete who ignored medical advice and returned to play before he was ready.” A murmur spread through the room. “She followed protocol. She provided treatment. She did her job.” I paused. “And when that athlete’s choices resulted in further injury, she became the easiest person to blame.” The cameras flashed. “Elena lost her position. She lost opportunities. She carried the weight of a decision that was never hers alone.” I looked toward her. She stood there quietly. Strong. But I could see the pain in her eyes. “And today, someone is attempting to repeat that damage.” A reporter stood. “Are you referring to Daniel Whitmore?” The room went silent. Elena stiffened beside me. I noticed. Of course I noticed. “Yes.” The reporters immediately started shouting. “Is Daniel Whitmore responsible for the leak?” “Did he threaten Elena?” “Why is he targeting the Blackwood organization?” I lifted a hand. “I will not make accusations without evidence.” A pause. “But I will say this.” My voice hardened. “No person deserves to have their life destroyed because someone else refuses to accept responsibility for their own actions.” Silence. Then came the question I knew was coming. “Mr. Blackwood, are you personally involved with Ms. Whitmore?” The room changed. Every camera turned toward us. Elena looked uncomfortable. I could feel her wanting to step back. But I didn’t let her. Because I had spent too long watching people abandon those who needed support. Not today. I looked at the reporter. “Elena is someone I respect.” A pause. “Someone I trust.” Another pause. “And someone this organization is fortunate to have.” The reporter pushed. “But is it more than professional?” I glanced at Elena. For one second, I saw everything. The woman who challenged me. The woman who cared about my players. The woman who saw past the money and the fame. The woman who made me feel human. Then I looked back at the cameras. “My personal life is irrelevant.” The room waited. “What matters is that Elena Whitmore is innocent of the accusations being made against her.” Elena I barely heard the rest. Because nobody had ever done that for me. Nobody had ever stood in front of the world and said: I believe you. Alexander had. And he did it without hesitation. After the conference ended, I followed him into the hallway. “Alex.” He stopped. “You didn’t have to do that.” He turned. “Yes, I did.” “No.” I shook my head. “You could have protected yourself.” His expression softened. “Elena.” I looked at him. “Do you know what I saw when I first met you?” I frowned. “What?” “A woman who was terrified everyone would discover she wasn’t perfect.” My breath caught. “But do you know what I see now?” I stayed quiet. “Someone who keeps showing up anyway.” The hallway became silent. “You think strength means never falling.” He stepped closer. “It doesn’t.” His voice lowered. “Strength is getting back up when everyone is waiting for you to stay down.” My eyes burned. Before I could answer, Carter rushed toward us. “Alex.” The urgency in his voice immediately changed the mood. “What?” Carter held out his phone. “You need to see this.” Alexander looked at the screen. Then his face went completely cold. “What happened?” I asked. He turned the phone toward me. A new post had appeared online. From Daniel Whitmore. A picture. A statement. And one sentence that made my blood run cold. “Alexander Blackwood, you want to play hero? Fine. Let’s see how long you protect the woman who destroyed my career.” Below it was another picture. One I had never seen before. One that made my heart stop. Because it showed me… Standing beside Daniel. On the day of his second injury. And from the angle of the photo… It looked like I was the one who caused it. Alexander looked at me. “Tell me this isn’t what it looks like.” My lips parted. But no words came out. Because for the first time… I wasn’t sure.
