The Secret Between Them

2535 Words
Elena The silence after my confession was louder than any accusation. Alexander didn’t move. He didn’t speak. He just looked at me. And somehow, that was worse. Because I could handle anger. I could handle disappointment. But Alexander’s silence? That was the one thing I couldn’t fight. “I knew Daniel before he became my patient.” The words hung between us. Heavy. Unavoidable. Alexander’s eyes searched mine. “How?” My throat tightened. “I told you. We were friends.” “No.” His voice was quiet. “But you didn’t tell me that.” I looked down. “I know.” “Why?” That question hurt more than I expected. Because there were so many answers. Because I was ashamed. Because I was afraid. Because I knew how it sounded. “I didn’t think it mattered.” Alexander let out a slow breath. “Elena.” I looked at him. “You were friends with the man who is publicly accusing you of destroying his career.” “I know.” “You treated him after that.” “Yes.” “And you never thought to mention it?” His words weren’t angry. They were controlled. That somehow made them worse. “I was afraid.” The confession surprised him. “Afraid of what?” I laughed softly. Not because it was funny. Because it hurt. “Of exactly this.” I gestured between us. “You looking at me differently.” His expression changed slightly. “Elena…” “No.” I shook my head. “I understand.” I walked toward the window. “I understand why it looks suspicious.” “It doesn’t.” “It does.” My voice cracked. “From the outside, it looks like I hid information because I had something to hide.” Alexander was quiet. And the quiet made my chest tighten. “So tell me.” His voice was softer now. “Why didn’t you tell me?” I closed my eyes. Because there was no avoiding it anymore. “Because Daniel wasn’t just someone I treated.” I turned around. “He was someone I trusted.” Alexander listened. “And when everything happened, that was the hardest part.” My voice lowered. “Not losing my job.” A pause. “Not losing my reputation.” I swallowed. “It was realizing that someone I considered a friend was willing to destroy me to save himself.” Something flickered in Alexander’s eyes. Pain. Understanding. But also questions. “How did you meet him?” I sat down slowly. “Before the injury, before the clinic…” I looked at my hands. “I met him at a charity event.” Alexander’s eyebrows lifted slightly. “A charity event?” “Yes.” I smiled faintly at the memory. “He wasn’t the arrogant hockey star everyone knew.” A pause. “He was funny.” Alexander stayed silent. “He was kind.” I looked away. “Or at least I thought he was.” The words carried disappointment. Not anger. Because anger faded. But betrayal stayed. “We became friends.” “How close?” The question came quietly. But I heard the concern underneath. “Not like that.” I answered immediately. Alexander’s expression relaxed slightly. “He was never someone I was romantically involved with.” A pause. “But we were close.” “How close?” I hesitated. “He knew things about me.” The room became quiet. “Things I didn’t tell many people.” Alexander looked away for a moment. And I knew exactly what he was thinking. Did Daniel know her better than me? That thought hurt. Because maybe he did. Back then. Before everything changed. “He knew about my mother.” Alexander’s expression softened. “He knew about my fears.” I swallowed. “He knew how badly I wanted to become someone who helped people.” A pause. “And then he used that trust against me.” Alexander looked back at me. “What exactly happened the night before his injury?” My heart sank. Because I knew that was the question waiting. The question I had avoided. “The night before?” “Yes.” I took a deep breath. “Daniel called me.” “Why?” “He was upset.” “About his career?” “Yes.” I looked down. “He had found out the team was considering another player for his position.” Alexander nodded. “And?” “He was angry.” “How angry?” I remembered his voice. The desperation. The frustration. “He said he would do anything to prove he was still the best.” Alexander’s expression hardened. “What did you say?” “I told him not to make a reckless decision.” “And?” “He didn’t listen.” A pause. “But before he left…” I stopped. Because this was the part I hated. “He asked me for help.” Alexander’s eyes narrowed. “What kind of help?” “He wanted me to clear him medically.” The room went still. “But I refused.” “Why?” “Because he wasn’t ready.” My voice became firmer. “I told him if he continued pushing himself, he could permanently damage his shoulder.” Alexander watched me. “And then?” “Then he got angry.” “How angry?” I looked away. “He said I was just like everyone else.” A pause. “He said I didn’t believe in him.” Alexander’s jaw tightened. “And that was the last time you spoke before the injury?” I nodded. “Yes.” Silence. Then Alexander asked the question that hurt the most. “Did he ever apologize?” I laughed quietly. “No.” The answer was immediate. “No, he didn’t.” My eyes burned. “He never called.” “Never?” “Never.” A pause. “He let me believe for years that I was the reason his life fell apart.” Alexander looked down. For a moment, he said nothing. Then he stood. Walked toward me. And stopped in front of me. “Elena.” I looked up. “I need you to understand something.” My heart beat faster. “I don’t care that you knew him.” A pause. “I care that you carried this alone.” My eyes softened. “But you still didn’t trust me enough to tell me.” The words hurt. Because they were true. “I wanted to.” “Then why didn’t you?” Because I was scared you would leave. The thought stayed in my head. But I couldn’t say it. Before I could answer, Alexander’s phone buzzed. He looked at the screen. His expression changed. “What?” I immediately noticed. “What happened?” He turned the phone toward me. A message. From Daniel. You still don’t know the truth. Ask Elena why she was really at the clinic that night. My blood froze. Because that wasn’t possible. Daniel couldn’t know. Alexander looked at me. “Elena.” My breathing became uneven. “Why was he asking that?” I didn’t answer. Because suddenly, I realized something. Daniel wasn’t just trying to ruin my career. He wasn’t just seeking revenge. He was trying to expose something else. Something I had never told Alexander. Something that happened before I ever became his therapist. Something that could change everything. And this time… I didn’t know if the truth would save me. Or destroy me. Elena I stared at the message on Alexander’s phone. Over and over again. The same sentence. The same accusation. Ask Elena why she was really at the clinic that night. My hands felt cold. Because Daniel wasn’t supposed to know. Nobody was supposed to know. Not the clinic. Not the media. Not Alexander. Nobody. “Elena.” His voice pulled me back. I looked at him. “Tell me.” There was no anger in his voice. No accusation. Just a request. A request that somehow felt heavier. “I…” My words disappeared. Alexander stepped closer. “Whatever it is, I need the truth from you. Not from him.” I closed my eyes. Because that was the thing about Alexander. He always made honesty sound easy. But he didn’t understand that sometimes the truth didn’t just hurt. Sometimes it changed everything. “I wasn’t assigned to Daniel.” His eyebrows pulled together. “What?” I swallowed. “Not at first.” The room became silent. “I was volunteering at the clinic.” Alexander watched me carefully. “Before you started working there?” I nodded. “Yes.” “Why?” The question was simple. The answer wasn’t. “Because of my mother.” His expression softened immediately. I rarely talked about her. Not because I didn’t love her. Because I did. Too much. “I was young when I lost her.” Alexander’s eyes stayed on mine. “She spent years in and out of hospitals. I remember sitting in waiting rooms, watching doctors and nurses take care of people.” My voice became quieter. “And I remember thinking… I wanted to be someone who helped people the way they helped her.” Alexander didn’t interrupt. “So I volunteered.” A pause. “That’s where I met Daniel.” I looked down. “He wasn’t injured yet. He was visiting the clinic for a charity program.” Alexander nodded slowly. “And you became friends.” “Yes.” “Then what happened?” I took a deep breath. “Months later, when he got injured, he requested me.” Alexander froze. “He requested you?” “Yes.” “Why?” “Because he trusted me.” The words felt strange now. Because trust was the very thing that destroyed us. “He said he wanted someone who actually cared about him, not just his career.” Alexander’s expression darkened slightly. “And you believed him.” “Yes.” A bitter smile crossed my face. “I was young.” “You cared.” I looked at him. “What?” “You cared.” His voice was gentle. “That’s not a weakness.” I looked away. “Sometimes it feels like one.” A silence passed. Then Alexander asked: “What does Daniel know that you’re afraid I’ll find out?” My heart stopped. Because he knew. Of course he knew. Alexander Blackwood always saw through people. “I made a mistake.” His expression immediately changed. “What kind of mistake?” I shook my head. “Not what you think.” “Then tell me.” I looked at him. “After Daniel’s first injury, before the second one…” I hesitated. “I fought with him.” Alexander listened. “I told him he was destroying himself. I told him he needed to stop trying to prove something to everyone.” A pause. “And he hated hearing it.” “Because you were right.” I gave a small nod. “Yes.” I looked down. “But that night, something happened.” “What?” “He begged me to help him.” Alexander’s face hardened. “Help him do what?” “Return.” The answer was barely a whisper. “He wanted me to sign paperwork saying he was medically cleared.” Alexander’s eyes sharpened. “But you refused.” “Yes.” “Then why does he think he has something against you?” “Because…” I stopped. Because this was the part I had never admitted. “Because I almost gave in.” Silence. Alexander stared at me. “What?” “I was tired.” My voice broke. “I was tired of watching him suffer. I was tired of watching someone I cared about lose everything.” I swallowed. “For one moment, I considered signing.” Alexander didn’t speak. “And then I remembered why I became a therapist.” I looked at him. “My job was not to make him happy.” A pause. “My job was to keep him safe.” The silence stretched. “Did you sign it?” “No.” The answer came quickly. “No, I didn’t.” Alexander exhaled. “Then why does this matter?” “Because Daniel knows I almost did.” A chill moved through me. “He knows I hesitated.” Alexander’s eyes narrowed. “And he’s using that.” “Yes.” Before Alexander could respond, the door opened. Carter walked in, looking serious. “Alex.” Alexander turned. “What?” “We found something.” Carter glanced at me. Then back at Alexander. “You’re going to want to see this.” Alexander took the file. “What is it?” “Daniel’s medical records.” My stomach tightened. “Those are confidential.” Carter nodded. “That’s the problem.” He looked at Alexander. “Someone altered them.” The room went silent. “What?” Carter handed him another document. “Three years ago, the official records showed one thing.” He pointed at the page. “But someone changed the dates.” Alexander looked at the documents. My heart raced. “What does that mean?” Carter’s expression was grim. “It means Daniel’s injury timeline doesn’t match the story he’s telling.” Alexander looked at me. Then at the papers. “He wasn’t injured because of you.” My breath caught. “What?” Carter nodded. “The damage to his shoulder existed before Elena ever treated him.” I froze. For three years… I had carried blame for something that wasn’t mine. But then Carter continued. “There’s more.” Alexander looked up. “What?” Carter hesitated. “The person who changed the records…” A pause. “Had access to Blackwood Wolves’ internal systems.” My heart sank. Alexander’s expression became cold. “Someone inside the organization.” Carter nodded. “Yes.” The room suddenly felt dangerous. Because this was no longer just about Daniel. Someone had planned this. Someone had manipulated the truth. Someone had been waiting. Alexander looked at me. And this time, there was no doubt in his eyes. Only determination. “You’re not facing this alone anymore.” My eyes burned. “Alex…” He stepped closer. “But we need to find out who is behind this.” A pause. “Before they destroy both of us.” At that moment, his phone buzzed again. One more message. Unknown number. Alexander opened it. And the color drained from his face. I immediately knew. Something was wrong. “What does it say?” He turned the phone toward me. Only three words. Ask about your father. My heart stopped. Because Daniel wasn’t just attacking my past anymore. He was reaching into Alexander’s. And whatever connection existed between our lives… Was something neither of us was prepared to discover.
