Shadows on Thin Ice

Alexander barely slept. The anonymous message lingered in his mind long after he had turned off the lights. Stay away from Elena Whitmore if you care about her career. He had dealt with threats before. As one of the NHL's biggest stars, he regularly received hateful comments online, unsolicited opinions from strangers, and even the occasional death threat after a bad game. Those never bothered him. This one was different. Because it wasn't about him. It was about Elena. At 5:30 a.m., Alexander was already in the private gym at Blackwood Manor. He couldn't do much with his injured shoulder, but he climbed onto the stationary bike, hoping the exercise would clear his mind. It didn't. He replayed every interaction he'd had with Elena. Every conversation. Every smile. Every sarcastic remark. Had someone seen them? Were the reporters following him? Or... Was someone deliberately watching her? His phone buzzed. Noah. NOAH: You're awake, aren't you? Alexander replied instantly. ALEXANDER: Yes. A video call appeared seconds later. Alexander answered. Noah's face filled the screen, his messy dark hair sticking up in every direction. "You look terrible." Alexander leaned back on the bike. "Good morning to you too." "I mean it." "You've got those brooding billionaire eyes." "I always have those." "No." "You've upgraded." "Now they're brooding with extra suffering." Alexander sighed. "You spend too much time on social media." "And you don't spend enough." Noah studied him for a moment. "Something happened." Alexander hesitated. Then he held up his phone, showing Noah the anonymous message. Noah's expression immediately changed. His easy smile disappeared. "Who sent that?" "I don't know." "You tell Coach?" "Not yet." "You should." Alexander looked away. "I don't want to make this bigger than it already is." "What if it's already bigger than you think?" Silence. Noah's voice softened. "Alex..." "If somebody's dragging Elena into this..." "We don't ignore it." Alexander knew he was right. "I'll handle it." "I know you will." Noah paused. "But don't handle it alone." Across the city... Elena arrived at the rehabilitation center carrying two cups of coffee. One for herself. The other for Dr. Reynolds. She greeted the receptionist with her usual warm smile. "Morning." The receptionist smiled back. "Morning, Elena." "You have a visitor." Elena frowned. "A visitor?" The receptionist nodded toward the waiting area. A woman stood beside the large windows, dressed in an elegant cream-colored coat and designer heels. Her blonde hair fell in perfectly styled waves. She looked every bit like someone who belonged on the cover of a fashion magazine. When she turned around, her sharp blue eyes settled on Elena. "Miss Whitmore?" "Yes?" The woman walked forward, extending a perfectly manicured hand. "I'm Victoria Sinclair." Elena shook it politely. "I'm sorry..." "Have we met?" Victoria smiled. "Not yet." "But I've heard a lot about you." Something in her tone made Elena uneasy. "What can I do for you?" Victoria glanced around the lobby before lowering her voice. "I was hoping we could talk somewhere private." A few minutes later... They sat across from one another in a quiet consultation room. Victoria crossed one elegant leg over the other. "I'll get straight to the point." Elena nodded. "I'm listening." "You've been treating Alexander." It wasn't a question. "Yes." "I'm his physical therapist." Victoria smiled politely. "I know." "I'm also his ex-fiancée." The words landed like a stone in the room. Elena blinked. "...I see." Victoria studied her carefully. "I imagine you've seen the headlines." "I have." "They're unfortunate." Elena remained calm. "Our relationship is professional." Victoria gave a soft laugh. "I wasn't suggesting otherwise." She leaned forward slightly. "I'm simply advising you." "About what?" "Alexander." Elena's expression remained neutral. "What about him?" Victoria smiled again. This time... It didn't reach her eyes. "He has a habit of making people believe they're special." The room fell silent. "When Alexander was younger..." Victoria continued. "He lived for hockey." "Everything else came second." She looked directly into Elena's eyes. "If he has to choose between love and the ice..." "He'll choose the ice." Every time." At that exact moment... Alexander's Aston Martin pulled into the clinic parking lot. He glanced at the dashboard clock. 8:48 a.m. He had become an early arrival without even realizing it. As he stepped out of the car, his gaze drifted toward the clinic entrance. Through the glass... He saw Elena. She wasn't alone. She was speaking with an unfamiliar woman. The woman rested a hand lightly on Elena's arm. Alexander froze. His heartbeat quickened. He recognized that woman instantly. "Victoria..." What the hell was she doing here? Inside the consultation room... Victoria stood. "I didn't come here to start trouble." Elena looked unconvinced. "I came because I know Alexander." She picked up her handbag. "And sooner or later..." "You're going to realize that loving him means learning to share him." Elena frowned. "Share him?" "With hockey." "With the media." "With sponsors." "With millions of fans who believe they know him." Victoria walked toward the door. "He'll never belong entirely to one person." She paused before opening it. "And neither will his heart." Without another word... She left. Elena remained seated. She wasn't hurt. She wasn't intimidated. But Victoria had succeeded in planting a single, dangerous question in her mind. Could someone whose entire life belonged to the world ever truly belong to one woman? The consultation room door opened again. This time... It was Alexander. His breathing was uneven from rushing through the hallway. He looked from the empty doorway back to Elena. "Was she here?" Elena slowly stood. "Yes." His jaw clenched. "What did she say to you?" Elena searched his face. There was something she'd never seen before. Not anger. Not irritation. Fear. She took a slow breath. "I think..." "...you should tell me who Victoria Sinclair really is." Alexander stood frozen in the doorway. For the first time since Elena had met him, the unshakable captain of the New York Blizzard looked... unsettled. He closed the door quietly behind him. The room suddenly felt much smaller. Elena folded her arms. "I'm waiting." Alexander ran a hand through his dark hair before letting out a slow breath. "Victoria and I were together for four years." Elena remained silent. She wanted the whole truth. Not headlines. Not gossip. His truth. "We met when I was twenty-four." "I'd just become captain." "Hockey was everything." A humorless smile tugged at the corner of his lips. "It still is." He looked down at the floor. "She understood the lifestyle." "The traveling." "The interviews." "The pressure." Elena listened carefully. "So..." "What happened?" Alexander laughed quietly. "It depends who you ask." "I'm asking you." He looked into her eyes. "I wasn't enough." The answer caught her off guard. She had expected him to blame Victoria. To be bitter. Instead... There was only quiet regret. Alexander walked toward the window overlooking the city. "There came a point where every conversation between us revolved around my schedule." "Training." "Games." "Sponsorships." "Travel." He rested one hand against the glass. "I kept telling myself things would slow down after the season." "They never did." Elena watched him carefully. "Did you love her?" The question lingered between them. Finally... "Yes." "I did." He swallowed. "But I don't think I knew how to show it." The admission surprised even him. He wasn't someone who spoke about his feelings. Not even to Noah. Yet somehow... Talking to Elena felt different. Safer. Elena stepped closer. "What happened after that?" Alexander exhaled slowly. "I proposed." Her eyebrows lifted slightly. "You were engaged?" He nodded. "For eleven months." Then his expression hardened. "Three weeks before the wedding..." "She left." The room fell silent. "She said she couldn't marry someone who loved hockey more than he loved her." Elena's heart tightened. "I'm sorry." He gave a small shrug. "So was I." He turned to face her. "But I don't want you believing everything she says." "I don't." "She knows exactly which words to use." "I'm aware." "Victoria has always been... persuasive." Elena tilted her head. "She wasn't wrong about one thing." Alexander frowned. "What?" "Hockey is your life." He didn't deny it. "It is." "And there's nothing wrong with that." He looked surprised. "I knew what kind of man you were before we met." She smiled faintly. "You practically introduced yourself by arguing with me." A reluctant chuckle escaped him. "You haven't let that go." "I probably never will." The tension eased. Just a little. Alexander rubbed the back of his neck. "What else did she tell you?" Elena hesitated. "She said..." "...if you ever had to choose between hockey and love..." "You'd always choose hockey." Alexander didn't answer immediately. Instead... He looked away. His silence spoke louder than words. Elena noticed. "You don't know." His jaw tightened. "No." "I don't." She wasn't expecting that. "I've never been forced to make that choice." "And I hope I never am." His voice was calm. "But if that day ever comes..." "I'd like to think I've learned something from this injury." Elena looked at him. "What?" "That there are things more fragile than careers." She blinked. "What do you mean?" Alexander met her gaze. "People." For a heartbeat... Neither of them moved. There was something incredibly vulnerable about the way he looked at her. Almost as if he hadn't intended to reveal that much. A knock interrupted the moment. Dr. Ethan Reynolds stepped inside. "I hope I'm not interrupting." Alexander stepped back immediately. "No." "We were just talking." Dr. Reynolds smiled knowingly. "I figured." He held up Alexander's latest medical file. "I've got your updated assessment." Alexander straightened. "And?" "The inflammation continues to decrease." Elena smiled. "That's good news." Dr. Reynolds nodded. "If you continue progressing at this pace..." "You may be cleared for light skating sooner than expected." Alexander's eyes lit up. "Seriously?" "I said may." Dr. Reynolds emphasized the word. "Don't start planning your comeback just yet." Alexander grinned. "I'll take 'may.'" "It's better than 'no.'" Word spread through the clinic surprisingly fast. Several therapists congratulated Elena on Alexander's progress. Others congratulated Alexander himself. One elderly patient walking with a cane smiled warmly. "I've been watching you." Alexander looked confused. "You have?" The man nodded. "You're less angry than when you first came in." Alexander blinked. "Was I that obvious?" The old man chuckled. "Son..." "You used to glare at the exercise bikes." Elena laughed so hard she had to look away. Alexander sighed. "I did not." "You absolutely did," Elena managed between laughs. "You looked personally offended by the treadmill." "It started first." She laughed even harder. The elderly man shook his head with amusement. "You two remind me of my wife and I." Alexander and Elena looked at each other. Neither of them knew what to say. The old man smiled knowingly before continuing down the hallway. Later that afternoon... Alexander prepared to leave. As he reached the reception desk, he noticed a small crowd gathered outside the clinic. Cameras. Microphones. Reporters. His expression darkened. "How did they find this place?" The receptionist looked nervous. "They've been here for almost an hour." One reporter noticed him through the glass. "There he is!" Within seconds, more cameras turned toward the entrance. Flashes erupted. Questions were shouted over one another. "Alexander! Is the mystery woman your girlfriend?" "Captain Blackwood, are you dating your physical therapist?" "How serious is the relationship?" "Has your injury brought you two closer?" Alexander's jaw clenched. He hated reporters camping outside the clinic. But what he hated even more... Was that Elena would have to walk through them too. He turned toward her. "I'll leave first." She frowned. "What?" "If they're focused on me..." "They won't bother you." Elena understood immediately. "You don't have to do that." "I know." His voice was steady. "I want to." She looked at him for a long moment. Then nodded. "Be careful." Their eyes met. Neither noticed Noah standing at the end of the hallway, having arrived to pick Alexander up. He had witnessed the entire exchange. The concern. The unspoken understanding. The instinct to protect. As Alexander pushed open the clinic doors, reporters surged forward in a frenzy. Noah looked from the chaos outside to Elena inside the building. Then he smiled to himself. "He's already fallen." Alexander just hadn't realized it yet. Outside, camera flashes exploded across the sidewalk. Alexander slipped on his sunglasses, his face returning to the calm, unreadable expression the world knew so well. The Ice King was back. But behind the icy mask... His thoughts weren't on the reporters. They weren't on hockey. They weren't even on the headlines. They were on the woman standing safely behind the clinic doors. And for the first time in years... Protecting someone felt more important than protecting his image.
