Desperate to save him, Eva must confront her past and agree to a dangerous deal with her ex-fiancé, Diego Valdez—a billionaire with ties to a powerful criminal cartel.

As she steps into Diego’s opulent world, old feelings resurface and tension mounts. Diego is determined to win Eva back while hiding dangerous secrets about his cartel connections.

As Eva investigates the true extent of Diego’s involvement, she uncovers a web of deceit that goes far beyond their fractured relationship. Their journey reveals hidden truths and tests their loyalty, but as they fight to secure their future, a shadowy figure looms, promising that their struggle is far from over. chapter 1 The deal
Eva Alvarez tapped her glass with her colleagues', enjoying the sound of laughter and clapping in the fancy bar located in central Havana. The windows let in the colourful city lights, and the warm breeze flowed through the open courtyard doors. Tonight, her hard work and determination was acknowledged by making her a partner at a prestigious law firm. Her bravery was celebrated especially in overcoming many obstacles as woman in a male-dominated industry. Nevertheless, as she sensed her phone vibrating for the third time in her handbag, a feeling of unease crept into her stomach. Glancing quickly at the screen, she observed Javier's name flashing continuously Eva excused herself from the table, saying she would return soon, as a sense of unease began to replace the celebratory atmosphere. As soon as she emerged, a refreshing gust of wind caressed her skin. She quickly swiped to pick up the call, but before she could speak, she heard Javier's panicked voice. "Eva, I require your assistance." "They are on their way to get me." A chill ran through her veins. Javier, please go at a slower pace. Who is coming after you? "I need to practice more before the competition." I made a mistake, alright? He had a cracked voice. "The funds... It wasn't meant to be lost, but—" Eva's chest throbbed with the pounding of her heart. Javier had always been daring, but never to this extent. "What do you mean by money?" What have you accomplished? "The Valdez family is here." His words came out in a barely audible whisper, hitting her like a heavy wave. "I became heavily involved." I believed I could repair it, however—" "Are you saying the Valdez family?" Eva sensed the ground moving below her feet. The name struck her like a blow to the stomach. It's not them. This person is not Diego Valdez. Please provide me with precise details about the current situation, Javier. The other end was silent, then there was a sigh. I took out a loan. A large portion of it. And at this moment... I am unable to repay it. "They are blackmailing me with the threat of reporting me for embezzlement, and they have the influence to ensure it leads to consequences." She couldn't stop her mind from racing. Javier was not only in trouble but also in peril. The Valdez family, while being one of the richest and most influential clans in Cuba, was heavily involved in criminal activities. Diego Valdez, the man she had once been in love with, was the focal point of everything. Eva said, her voice trembling, "I'm on my way to get you." "Can you tell me your location?" The line disconnected before Javier could reply. Eva remained immobile on the pavement, the sounds of the city blending into the background. Memories of Diego resurfaced suddenly, without being called upon. She had not encountered him for years, ever since their engagement ended that night, leaving her shattered and embarrassed. She promised herself she would never turn back, to leave behind all they used to be. However, fate now appeared to have different intentions. Diego had all the power while her brother was stuck in a nightmare he had created. The weather was so bad that we had to cancel the picnic. Eva stayed awake all night without sleeping. She was unable to. She struggled to comprehend all of it, her thoughts racing. Javier was always impulsive, but borrowing money from Diego's family? That was a sentence of death. There was no option but to confront Diego once more, although the idea of encountering him again and getting caught up in his sphere made her feel nauseous. She woke up, sitting at her desk trying to focus on work, but she was continuously thinking about Javier. The wall clock seemed to be moving at a slower pace than normal, each tick echoing loudly in the quiet room. Her phone rang once more at noon. Diego. Looking at the name on the screen, her heart skipped a beat. She hadn't heard from him in years. Now, faced with the risk of losing Javier's life, he extended a helping hand. She answered with shaky fingers. "Eva," he spoke in a smooth, controlled voice, the very voice that had once caused her to fall in love. "We must have a conversation." She asked sharply, "What have you done to my brother?" Diego breathed out deeply, the noise so recognizable but far away. "I didn't do any action, Eva." Javier caused this to happen to himself. However, I am able to assist him. I have the ability to dismiss the charges, vindicate his reputation. She shut her eyes, struggling against the feelings welling up inside her. Diego, how much does it cost? You are constantly desiring something. A lengthy moment of silence ensued, weighted with history, lingering between them. "You are correct." I want something. Eva stopped breathing, anticipating what was about to happen. "He finally said, 'I desire you.'" I desire for you to become my wife, Eva. Throughout the course of a single year. The words lingered in the atmosphere, surreal and oppressive. She chuckled with a bitter tone, even though the situation was far from humorous. "Are you crazy?" We are not even in a relationship. Do you expect me to marry you in order to help my brother? You see this as a game, right?" "This is not a game," Diego responded, his voice becoming firm. "This is a matter of commerce." I am seeking a spouse for one year. You must ensure the safety of your brother. "This is the agreement." She gripped the phone tightly in her hand. " And what occurs in the following year? Do you believe you can discard me as easily as you did in the past?" After a moment of silence, his voice was gentler when he resumed speaking. Eva, this isn't about you and me. I am able to assist your brother, but you must consent. Eva felt like her world was spinning out of hand. She had put in a lot of effort to create a life separate from Diego, steering clear of the harmful influence he had. However, Javier's upcoming prospects were at stake, and the sole solution was to go through Diego. "I'll consider it," she said before hanging up. The dog chased the cat through the garden. Time flew by quickly. Eva sat in her office, gazing at the stacks of legal documents demanding her focus, however, her thoughts were elsewhere. Was she truly capable of achieving this? Is it possible for her to remarry Diego Valdez, even if it's only for a year? The sound of her phone ringing interrupted her thoughts. One more phone call. However, on this occasion, Diego was not the one responsible. The number was limited. After a brief pause, she responded. "Is anyone there?" A low and threatening voice spoke from the other end, sounding distorted. Choose to wed him, otherwise your sibling will perish. The call was disconnected. Eva gazed at the phone, her heart pounding. She struggled to understand what had just occurred, her hands shaking. Diego's proposal was not the only thing on the table now. There was another person implicated - someone who posed a threat. The decision's weight hung over her like a dark storm cloud. There was nothing she could do. Eva got up and walked back and forth across her office. Getting married to Diego involved looking back at the past and facing the man who had previously hurt her emotionally and damaged her confidence. However, in the event that she did not... There is a possibility that Javier will not make it. On her desk, she ran her fingers over an old photo of her and Javier, their happy and relaxed smiles captured. They had been incredibly close as they grew up, unable to be separated. She couldn't allow him to take the blame for something like this. She was unable to disappoint him. She took a deep breath before grabbing her phone and messaging Diego. "see you tomorrow." The company implemented new safety protocols to ensure the well-being of employees during the pandemic. As Eva went home from her office that evening, her mind was troubled by the gravity of her choice. As she made her way towards her car, the dimly lit street was filled with the smell of the ocean and the distant sound of the city. However, something didn't feel right. A figure lurking close behind her, barely within her grasp. Turning her head, she was caught off guard as a man in a dark suit emerged from the shadows before she could respond. Quickly, he passed her a letter. "What is this?" she inquired, maintaining a stable voice despite feeling uneasy. "Open it," the man instructed, his face hidden by the edge of his hat. Eva looked around, but there was no one on the street. She opened the envelope with hesitation and took out a solitary piece of paper. She gasped in shock when she saw the words written in red ink. "Either marry him, or your brother will be killed." Glancing upwards, she realized the man had disappeared, fading into the darkness of the night. Eva remained in place, her hand shaking as she held the note. This was no longer solely concerning Diego. There was another person controlling things - someone even more perilous than she had believed. She found herself thinking back to the previous encounter with Diego. She thought they were young, in love, and engaged. Until the day she stumbled upon the frightening side of him. The power he possessed was not only related to money, but it was perilous, the type of peril that lingered with you even once you departed. She was unable to consider that at the moment. Javier found himself imprisoned, his life crumbling, and there was only one individual capable of rescuing him. The name of the person is Diego. Eva paused in front of her former engagement ring, tucked away in her jewelry box and untouched for years. Now, she may need to put it on once more, but this time out of obligation rather than affection. This time, the stakes were at their highest level yet
