The Solstice Banquet Rejection
“Look me in the eye and say it again, Damon.” Elena’s voice didn’t tremble, though the air in the grand ballroom felt like frost against her skin. The heavy gold-embossed crystal chandelier above reflected off the polished obsidian floor, casting sharp, jagged light across the sea of high-society pack members. Alpha Damon Reed adjusted the silver cufflinks of his tailored Italian suit. His dark eyes remained completely unreadable, cold as steel. “You heard me, Elena,” Damon said softly, his voice carrying clearly across the silent crowd. “I am severing the bond.” A collective gasp echoed through the room. Elena took a step forward, her heels clicking against the stone floor. She ignored the hundreds of eyes staring at her—the whispers, the malicious sneers, the pitying looks from the noble houses of Silver Crest. “Did our two years together mean nothing to you, Damon?” she asked, her fists clenching at her sides until her manicured nails bit into her palms. “Two years of building this pack? Two years of blood, sweat, and promises?” “Promises are made by boys, Elena,” Damon sneered, taking a slow step toward her. “I am an Alpha now. And an Alpha must think of his legacy.” From behind him, a woman stepped out of the shadow of the velvet curtains. Victoria Landry, daughter of High Council Chairman Landry, glided forward in a shimmering emerald gown that clung to every curve. Her crimson lips curled into a victorious smile as she slid her hand down Damon’s arm, intertwining her fingers with his. “Don’t make a scene, sweetie,” Victoria purred, tilting her head with fake sympathy. “It’s embarrassing for everyone.” Elena’s gaze shifted from Victoria’s claw-like grip on Damon’s forearm straight back into the eyes of the man who had promised her forever. “You’re trading me for political leverage?” Elena asked, her voice dropping to a icy whisper that cut sharper than a blade. “You’re throwing away a fated mate bond for Chairman Landry’s seat on the Council?” “I am doing what is necessary for Silver Crest,” Damon declared coldly, lifting his chin. “A weak pack girl with a disgraced father cannot stand beside me on the throne. Victoria brings the military backed by the High Council. You bring nothing.” “I gave you my loyalty!” Elena spat, taking another step closer, forcing Damon’s personal guard to twitch toward their weapons. “When your uncle tried to overthrow you, who stood at your back? When the silver poison almost took your life, who bled to save you?” “That was then,” Damon dismissed her with a wave of his hand. “This is now. The bond is a mistake of nature. I, Alpha Damon Reed of the Silver Crest Pack, formally reject you, Elena Thomas, as my mate.” A searing wave of physical agony ripped through Elena’s chest as the invisible threads of the fated bond snapped violently. She gasped, stumbling back half a step, pressing a hand over her heart as heat scorched through her veins, leaving a cold, hollow void in its wake. Victoria let out a light, tinkling laugh that cut through Elena’s chest like a rusted blade. “Oh, look at her. She actually thought she was special.” “Sign the release forms, Elena,” Damon commanded, tossing a black leather folder onto the glass table beside them. “Surrender your claims to the Alpha estate, pack housing, and your father’s military pension. Do it quietly, and I won’t strip your citizenship.” Elena slowly straightened her back, fighting off the sickening pain in her ribs. She looked down at the documents, then back up at Damon. “My father served this pack for thirty years,” Elena said, her eyes flashing with dangerous gold embers. “His pension was earned in blood. You don't get to steal his life's work because you bought yourself a high-society mistress.” Damon’s jaw tightened, his wolf surfacing behind his eyes, turning his pupils into slits of predatory amber. “Watch your tongue, Elena. You are speaking to your Alpha.” “You are not my Alpha,” Elena snapped, stepping right into his space, completely unbothered by the pressure of his aura. “You are a coward who sold his soul for a golden collar.” Victoria’s smile vanished instantly. “Damon! Are you going to let this common servant speak to us like this on our coronation night?” Damon’s eyes hardened into ice. He raised his hand, signaling the perimeter enforcement team stationed around the ballroom. “I offered you a quiet exit, Elena,” Damon said softly, leaning down close to her ear. “But you always were too stubborn for your own good.” Four heavily armed, silver-armored pack guards stepped out from the crowd, their heavy boots thudding in unison against the marble as they surrounded Elena, drawing their shock-batons. “Escort the former mate off the premises,” Damon ordered loudly, turning his back on her as he wrapped his arm around Victoria’s waist. “If she resists, use full physical force. She no longer holds any rank in Silver Crest.” Victoria let out a loud, mocking laugh right in Elena's face as the head guard grabbed Elena’s shoulder with a brutal, iron grip. “Touch me again,” Elena whispered to the guard, her eyes burning bright gold, “and I will snap your arm in three places.” Before the guard could react, the heavy iron double doors at the back of the ballroom slammed open with an explosive boom, shattering the stained-glass arches above. A terrifying, suffocating pressure instantly flooded the hall, crushing the air out of every lung in the room. The guards froze in mid-stride, their weapons trembling in their hands. Through the drifting smoke of the destroyed doorway walked a tall, dark silhouette flanked by silver-eyed elite warriors. “Did someone say... an Alpha can break a contract without paying the price?” A low, deep voice echoed through the vast hall, smooth as rich silk, yet heavy enough to bring half the noble lords to their knees. Prince Lucian Vane—the banished Lycan King of the Onyx Citadel—stepped into the light.
