CHRIS DROVE HOME from the Mayo Clinic in a good mood because he’d gotten what he wanted—clearance to return to work on the following Monday. Armed with that information, he decided to stop by St. Vincent’s Medical Center on the way home. He went straight to his boss’s office, and when he walked up to the secretary’s desk, she smiled.
“Chris!” she said. “It’s so good to see you. We’ve missed you around here.”
“Thanks. Is the boss in?”
“He’s in, and there’s nobody in his office, why don’t you go right on in?”
“Thanks.”
Chris knocked on his boss’s door, opened it, and walked inside the office.
Dr. Makis looked up from his desk. “Chris, it’s good to see you.”
“Thanks. I have news for you.”
“What news?”
“Simply this.” Chris handed him a sheet of paper.
