CHRIS HAD BEEN home from the hospital for a few days but had yet to venture far from the bathroom. He spent most of his time in the den, working on his book in between trips down the hall to the master bathroom, which was where Mickey found him one day when he returned home from work.
“On the throne again, I see,” Mickey said.
Chris held out his arms, and when Mickey walked up to where he sat, he wrapped them around Mickey and buried his face in his abdomen.
When Chris finally let Mickey go, he said, “It’s been a long day, and I’ve spent a fair amount of it as you see me.”
“Then let me ask you one question: was it worth it?”
