Just before it all went completely dark, I saw someone jump into the water.
SPLASH!
The little bit of hopelessness that had seized me by then vanished instantly and suddenly I widened my eyes, screaming as I reached up to the figure that was now swimming toward me . But I was so frantic to get out that the struggle had me swallowing water and worsening my choking.
That's when he grabbed my hand, lifted me, and started to ascend to the surface.
When I tasted the breath finally, I feared for a split second that my chest would split open and burst. The relief was so overpowering.
I spat out water, retching violently as my body expelled water from my windpipe while clutching my chest that hurt like hell.
