Chapter 1
The Thrill of the Chase Mariah Valdez had always been in love with love. The excitement of a new romance, the electricity of stolen glances, the adrenaline rush of flirting—it was her addiction. She had perfected the art of the chase, skillfully navigating the intricate dance of attraction. But the moment she felt her own heart tipping into something more, something real, she lost interest. She sat at the corner table of a cozy little café, absently stirring her caramel macchiato. Across from her sat Jeremy, the latest in her string of romantic distractions. He was sweet, thoughtful, and just the right amount of charming. His bright blue eyes sparkled as he spoke about his favorite novels, his voice brimming with enthusiasm. A week ago, she had been enthralled by the way he analyzed Dostoevsky and debated the merits of classic literature. Now, she was bored. Mariah tried to fight it. She knew this pattern all too well. The initial rush had faded, and now that she recognized the warmth spreading through her chest as genuine affection, she wanted out. She had told herself this time would be different. But sitting there, listening to Jeremy talk about his plans for a weekend getaway, she could feel the walls closing in. "That sounds nice," she said, forcing a smile. "You don’t seem excited," Jeremy noted, his expression shifting. She sighed, placing her cup down. "It’s not you, Jeremy. You’re wonderful. Really. It’s me. I just... I don’t think this is what I want." The disappointment in his eyes stung, but only for a moment. She had become used to this—hurting people before they had a chance to hurt her. It was better this way. Cleaner. Jeremy nodded slowly, as if he had been expecting it. "I should have known." Mariah tilted her head. "Known what?" "That you love the beginning, Mariah. But you don’t stick around for the middle." He gave her a sad smile, then stood up, tossing a few bills on the table. "Goodbye, Mariah. I hope you find what you’re looking for." She watched him walk away, a pang of something resembling regret flickering in her chest. But it wasn’t regret—not really. It was the knowledge that she had done it again, that she would always do this. That evening, Mariah found herself at a lavish rooftop party, nursing a glass of wine and trying to shake off the weight of another failed romance. The city lights stretched out beneath her, twinkling like scattered diamonds. She needed a distraction. Something—or someone—to remind her why she loved the thrill of romance in the first place. And then she saw him. Sebastian Grey. Her stomach twisted, not in excitement, but in sheer irritation. If there was one man who could shatter her composed exterior, it was him. Sebastian had been a thorn in her side for years. Arrogant, insufferably composed, and maddeningly handsome, he had a way of provoking her that no one else could. They had always been at odds, locked in a battle of wits and veiled insults. And yet, fate always seemed to push them into each other’s orbit. "Mariah Valdez, breaking hearts again?" His deep, smooth voice sent a ripple of annoyance down her spine. She turned, meeting his sharp gray eyes. "Sebastian Grey, ruining my night as usual?" He smirked. "It’s a special talent of mine." She took a sip of her wine, watching him warily. "What do you want? Surely, you have more important things to do than irritate me." "Oh, but irritating you is my favorite pastime," he said smoothly, leaning casually against the railing. "Besides, I heard about Jeremy. Another one bites the dust?" Mariah rolled her eyes. "Are you stalking me now?" "Hardly. It’s just common knowledge at this point. You fall fast and flee faster." He tapped his glass against hers, his smirk deepening. "One might think you’re afraid of love." She bristled. "I’m not afraid of love. I just don’t believe in settling for something dull. Love should be thrilling." "Love should be real," Sebastian countered. "Not a fleeting game." Mariah scoffed. "Spoken like a man who thinks love is just a contract. You probably have a five-year marriage plan mapped out, complete with scheduled date nights and tax benefits." "And you," he said, leaning in slightly, "are terrified of anything permanent. Because permanence requires effort." His words hit a nerve, but she masked it with a laugh. "Spare me the psychoanalysis, Sebastian. You don’t know me." "Oh, but I do," he murmured, his voice almost teasing. "And that’s what bothers you most." Mariah opened her mouth to retort, but before she could, someone interrupted. "Ah, Mariah! Just the woman I was looking for!" Her mother’s voice rang out across the rooftop, and Mariah internally groaned. Evelyn Valdez swept toward them, elegance radiating from her every step. She was the epitome of sophistication, a woman who believed in proper matches and well-planned futures. And judging by the knowing smile on her face, Mariah knew she wasn’t going to like whatever came next. "Mother," she said cautiously. "What are you up to?" Evelyn beamed. "Oh, nothing much, darling. I was just speaking with Richard Grey earlier. Such a wonderful man. And, well... he and I both agree that you and Sebastian should finally put an end to this ridiculous rivalry." Mariah’s eyes narrowed. "What are you talking about?" Her mother clasped her hands together. "A proper engagement, of course!" Mariah choked on her wine. "Excuse me?!" Sebastian, for once, seemed caught off guard. "What?" Evelyn waved a dismissive hand. "Oh, don’t be so dramatic, both of you. It’s a simple arrangement. You two have known each other for years, and let’s be honest, you’re practically a perfect match." Mariah turned to Sebastian, expecting him to be just as horrified. Instead, she found him studying her, his expression unreadable. Then, to her absolute horror, his lips curled into a slow, amused smile. "Interesting," he murmured. Mariah glared. "This is absurd!" Evelyn sighed. "Darling, it’s time you took love seriously. And what better way than with someone who challenges you?" Mariah shot Sebastian a death glare. "I’d rather die." He chuckled, taking a sip of his drink. "Well, sweetheart, it looks like you and I are about to have a very interesting time." Mariah’s head spun. She had spent years running from love, from stability, from anything that felt too real. And now? She was engaged to the one man she absolutely could not stand.
