Until Alpha Kael Blackthorn saves a broken young woman named Elara Vale

from a brutal life in the powerful Thornwood Pack, humans only exist as

breeders and servants. Elara finds love, safety, and the perilous hope that she

might be more than just a human convenience under his protection. She believes

she is unique and stays by his side for years. Until Kael returns with his fated

partner, Selene Silvercrest, and declares her Luna's future in public. Elara

watches, humiliated and heartbroken, as political alliances strengthen the pack

and Selene gracefully assumes her destined role. Elara must choose whether to

quietly vanish or fight for the place she carved out with blood and tears as Kael

becomes torn between their sacred bond and lingering feelings. But the darkness

is getting worse. The survival of the entire pack is in jeopardy due to

coordinated rogue attacks and rumors of an ancient power awakening in the

distant mountains. Caught between heartbreak, political intrigue, and deadly

secrets, Elara discovers strength she never knew she possessed. She may

become the key to the pack's salvation or the spark that blows everything out of

the water in a world that has always considered her inferior. Love, loyalty, and

the very concept of belonging will all be put to the test on her agonizing journey

from an abandoned human to a force that challenges fate itself. The MoonGoddess may ultimately select the destined partner, but Elara will decide her own fate

Chapter1
The words hit me like a slap across the face. “She actually thought she deserved to be our Luna, how pathetic.” They weren’t spoken to me directly, but they might as well have been. I stood frozen at the edge of the clearing, half-hidden behind the thick trunk of an old oak, my fingers digging into the rough bark until splinters bit into my skin. Their murmurs had been rising and falling like the wind through the pines as the pack had gathered under the almost-full moon's pale light. And there, in the center of it all, was Kael. My Kael. He stood tall and commanding as always, broad shoulders cutting an imposing silhouette against the night. His dark hair was tousled from the run he must have taken earlier, and his arms were wrapped around her, a woman I had never previously seen. Tall, elegant, with silver-streaked hair that caught the moonlight like it belonged there. She leaned into him with a confidence that made my stomach twist. My blood ran cold and I was unable to breathe. The scent of pine, damp earth, and the wild musk that always clung to the werewolves after a shift made the air feel too thick and heavy. I pressed myself harder against the tree, willing the shadows to swallow me whole. As a human in this pack, invisibility had always been my safest armor. But tonight, it felt like the only thing keeping me from shattering completely. How did this come to be? My life had been nothing but hell before Kael. I was born in one of the border villages, the kind of place where humans were traded like livestock to werewolf packs. My father owed debts he could never pay, so when I turned sixteen, I was sold. Passed from pack to pack like a worn out tool. Some used me for labor. Others… worse. The nights blurred together—cold floors, rough hands, the constant reminder that I was nothing. Just a fragile human body in a world ruled by fangs and claws. Then Kael found me. It was during a raid on the Blackfang pack, I still remember the way he tore through their warriors, eyes glowing with that fierce amber light. When he saw me chained in the corner of their holding pen, filthy and half-starved, something in his expression shifted. He didn’t look at me with pity, he looked at me like I mattered. I was returned to the Thornwood Pack by him, gave me a small cabin on the edge of the territory. Clean clothes, hot meals and protection. For the first time in my life, someone saw me as more than a breeder. Werewolf law was clear—only humans could carry their pups to term. Most Alphas treated human women like disposable vessels. But Kael never did. He sat with me on quiet evenings, listening to my broken stories. He showed me how to walk fearlessly through the forest, he touched me like I was glass, precious and rare and I thought I was special. I thought we had something real. I realized how foolish I had been as I watched him hold her at this point. “Everyone,” Kael’s voice carried across the clearing, deep and steady, the voice of an Alpha who expected obedience. “This is Selene, my fated mate.” The words landed like stones in still water, ripples of surprise, then murmurs of approval spread through the pack. A few of the younger wolves howled softly in celebration. I saw Beta Marcus clap Kael on the shoulder, grinning like a proud brother. Selene smiled—beautiful, radiant, every inch the Luna she was born to be. My hands started shaking. I couldn’t accuse him, what right did I have? I was human, fragile and replaceable. The truth that werewolves could only breed successfully with humans had kept me alive this long, but it had never made me equal. I was tolerated because I was useful, because Kael had chosen to protect me, or so I’d believed. Tears burned at the corners of my eyes, but I refused to let them fall, not here, not where anyone could see. I had survived worse than this, survived chains and beatings and nights where death felt like mercy. I could survive a broken heart. But gods, it hurt. Why her? Why now? Kael had always told me the mate bond was rare and sacred. Something that didn’t always appear in a wolf’s lifetime. He had looked at me many nights, his fingers tracing my cheek, and whispered that maybe the Moon Goddess had given him something better than fate, something chosen. Lies, all of it lies. I watched as Selene turned her face up to him. Their eyes met, and even from my hiding spot I could feel the pull between them—the ancient, undeniable spark of the fated bond. It made my chest ache with a hollow kind of emptiness. Kael’s hand rested possessively on her waist. The same hand that had held mine so gently just two nights ago. I stumbled backward, feet catching on roots. A twig snapped under my boot, and several heads turned in my direction. Including Kael’s. For one terrible moment, our eyes locked. His amber gaze widened slightly—surprise, maybe guilt, maybe nothing at all. I couldn’t read him anymore. The man who had once seemed like my salvation now looked like a stranger wearing his face. I turned and ran. Branches whipped at my arms and face as I crashed through the undergrowth. My heart hammered wildly, louder than my ragged breathing. Behind me, I heard voices calling out, but I didn’t stop. The forest blurred around me—silver moonlight cutting through the canopy, the distant howl of wolves celebrating their new Luna. My cabin came into view at the edge of the territory, small and modest, the one place that had ever felt like home. I slammed the door behind me, leaned against it, and then slid down until I was sitting on the splintered wooden floor. Only then did the tears come. Hot, unattractive tears that ripped from my chest like they had been waiting for years to come out. How could he do this? He knew what this pack meant to me, he knew how much I had come to love the quiet rhythm of life here—the morning runs with the younger wolves (from a safe distance), the way the elders sometimes shared stories around the fire, the fragile sense of belonging I had scraped together from nothing, and today he destroyed it all. I curled my knees to my chest, pressing my forehead against them. Questions swirled in my mind like leaves in a storm. Did he ever truly care? Or was I just a pleasant distraction until his true love showed up? What was he hiding behind those careful smiles and protective touches? And Selene—what was her actual function? Was she truly just his fated mate, or was there something more calculated beneath her perfect surface? The pack wouldn’t want me here anymore, not with a true Luna taking her place. Humans who weren’t breeding stock tended to disappear quietly. Or worse. If I left… where would I go? Back to the human villages where I’d be easy prey again? Was it possible that someone better waited outside for me? Or was this the best I could ever hope for, a half-life in the shadow of wolves? And the most dangerous question of all: Could we ever fix what he had broken? Did I even want to? A soft knock at the door made me flinch. “Elara?” Kael’s voice, low and careful. I didn’t answer. My body trembled as I hugged my knees tighter, willing him to go away. The Alpha’s human pet. That’s all I had ever been. The knock came again, firmer this time. “I know you’re in there. Please… let me explain.” Explain! As if there were words that could mend the way my world had just cracked open. I stayed silent, tears soaking into the fabric of my worn dress. Outside, the moon continued her indifferent watch over the forest. The same moon that had bound Kael to Selene. And left me alone in the dark.
