Chapter Eight

What was wrong with me? Was I being swayed by a stranger just because of a smile? No. Even if he’s helping me right now I shouldn’t let my guard down. Who knows, he too may have some ulterior motives in coming here and pretending to be my boyfriend. ‘Luna, as your guardian…’ My aunt began. ‘She’s an adult. There’s no need for a guardian here.’ My younger uncle said. ‘I think we should leave her alone. She’s already been through a lot, I don’t want to bother her anymore.’ Giving me expressions that of a reformed man, he patted my head and motioned his family to follow him out. Did I see that correctly? ‘He’s a child himself to take care of you. I think it is why he left like that.’ Elder uncle said though I was sure he himself was confused. ‘What do we do about this situation now?’ Uncle Alessandro said looking at my aunt. ‘We are staying here with her.’ Aunt Maria said and I clenched my fists. Does this woman ever give up? Gina held her mother’s forearm gently and said, ‘Mom, if Luna doesn’t wants us here then do we really have to?’ One thing about my cousin is, even though she and I never had been best friends, she’d made no attempts to be on my bad side either. She’s been neutral and I was hoping she would remain so. ‘Gina, your cousin needs someone to look after her.’ Her mother tried to reason. ‘Her boyfriend is here. If she needs someone right now, it’s him.’ Gina said. ‘You daughter is right. I’m here for Luna.’ My aunt didn’t look too happy when Sole said that. I knew nobody was going to move a place if I didn’t do something bold. ‘Sole’ He looked at me when I called his name. ‘Can you take me to my bedroom?’ It was sure he wasn’t expecting it for he stared at me for a minute. ‘I’m tired. Can you please help get to my room?’ ‘Sure.’ He rolled back his shoulders and bent down to pick me up from the wheel chair. Now in his arms, I looked at nothing but his face. He moved towards the staircase and my family members stood in their place out of shock. ‘You all can leave. It’s going to be dark soon.’ I called back my gaze still on Sole. A few minutes later I was on my bed. Sole’s eyes met mine and he asked, ‘You really do have a way of making things clear to people. Someone like you, don’t really need a savior.’ ‘Who are you?’ He raised his brows. ‘I’m Sole.’ ‘Is that your real name? Or did you…’ ‘It is my real name.’ ‘Why are you here?’ To answer my question he took out a paper from his jeans pocket. The letter. It was the letter that I wrote. I knew it just by looking at the paper. ‘Where did you get it from?’ His smile turned into a grin and he answered. ‘God.’ I rolled my eyes. ‘Tell me the truth. Who are you and why are you here?’ ‘You sent a letter to god and he sent me to you.’ ‘Both of us know that’s not true.’ He moved forward and sat near me on the bed and leaned close. ‘Believe it or not but it is god who’d sent this handsome, rich and powerful guy right here to save you from your problems.’ I scoffed. ‘Handsome? You?’ ‘Are you sure you can see properly? Did the accident affect your eyes?’ Even when baffled no one could deny his remarkable features. He looked like someone who just came out of a movie, tall, porcelain skin, jet black hair and without a miss, his grey eyes. If we would’ve met under normal circumstances, it was very much possible for me to see a halo behind him. But all of this was something that I couldn’t accept in front of him. The more these kinds of guys know people are appreciating about them, the more they step on the clouds. ‘You’re not that attractive.’ He stood up and stared at me before giving me a smile. ‘You’re crushing on me already, aren’t you?’ ‘Absolutely not!’ ‘You’re in denial I can see. Don’t worry I’ll help you accept your feelings during my stay here.’ I straightened up. ‘Who said you’re staying here?’ ‘Didn’t you say in front of your aunt that I’ll be taking care of you?’ ‘That was just to make her leave. She must’ve left by now. You can also leave.’ ‘I don’t want to.’ I blinked. What? He didn’t want to leave? Was he after the house too? ‘If you’re after this house…’ ‘I’m after you.’ I don’t know why but that made my heart flutter again. No, No, this is wrong. There should be more self-control. I took a deep breath. ‘I don’t need you to be here.’ ‘Then why did you write this letter.’ He waved the letter he was still holding in his hand. I looked down. ‘It was just me being stupid.’ Or desperate, I thought. His hands cupped my face and my eyes met his. ‘You weren’t being stupid. Everyone is allowed to be vulnerable. You asked for help from the only source you could think of.’ ‘I’m not going to be moved by your words.’ ‘You don’t have to. All I’m telling you is that, there is a person you can rely on form today.’ He stared for another minute at me and then left me there to retrospect upon the situation. A little later our house help, Mrs. Anderson knocked on my door. She looked nervous as she entered with my medicines and a glass of water on a tray. ‘How are you feeling?’ ‘Better.’ ‘Your uncle and aunt left.’ ‘Good. Now I can breathe.’ I took the medicine and then asked, ‘Did the guy, Sole also leave?’ ‘He’s sitting in the living room.’ I sighed. Why hasn’t he left yet? ‘Ask him to go home.’ ‘Can’t he stay?’ I looked at Mrs. Anderson as if she’d grow two horns. ‘What are you saying? How can we let a stranger spent the night in the house?’ She looked at her hands and then bit her lip. She was nervous for some reason. ‘What is it?’ I asked. ‘Well, I don’t know how to say this but….I don’t think you should be alone right now.’ I placed my hand on hers and said, ‘I’m not alone. I have you here with me.’ ‘But I’m not sure if I can save you from the coming danger.’ ‘I don’t understand.’ She let out a breath and said, ‘I’m not sure if your aunts and uncles really have given up on the property.’ ‘Mrs. Anderson, my aunts and uncles might be greedy but they’re not goons that they will try to harm me for money.’ ‘You can never be so sure of such things. Money changes everyone. Everyone.’ ‘I don’t know where you’re getting these suspicions from but I can’t let a stranger stay here just for the sake of me feeling safe. Who knows he might turn out to be a threat to my safety?’ ‘If you think so who am I to object. I’ll go ask him to leave.’ ‘Please do.’ As she left the room, I laid down thinking if I will really be okay alone? Will my family turn against me for money? Thoughts and medicine gave me a sleeping effect and soon I dozed off. It must’ve been in the middle of the night that I was waked up again when suddenly a hand came to my mouth and I couldn’t breathe.
