Luna
‘Who did you say you were?’ My aunt asked as if she hadn’t heard him say he was my boyfriend.
‘Luna’s boyfriend.’ The stranger said. He looked young but gave the persona of that of a very confident adult. Probably it was the reason my family, especially my aunt felt intimidated by him already.
‘What is he saying?’ This question was to me.
‘Didn’t he already answer you?’ I said surprised at my own audacity. Never had I spoken to any of the elders in my family like that.
‘Luna!’ My aunt shouted.
‘There’s no need to shout. Don’t forget she is yet to recover.’ The stranger said. ‘Speaking of which, can I ask with whose permission did you get Luna here? Wasn’t she supposed to rest for a few days more?’
I wondered how he knew that. The question in my mind was asked by my younger uncle. ‘How did you know she was to be at the hospital?’
‘As a boyfriend it is something I should know.’ A reply came.
‘Then shouldn’t as a boyfriend you should’ve some to visit her.’ My elder uncle said narrowing his eyes on the guy.
My aunt moved forward as if she’d caught on his lie. ‘Exactly! None of us saw you at the hospital.’
The guy stood there still in confidence almost as if he was prepared for every question being asked. ‘Do I have to make my presence felt to you all? Luna knew I was there, that’s what matters. Besides I never saw you with her all the time too.’ His accusing eyes met my aunt’s darker ones.
Their staring competition stopped only when the lawyer cleared his throat. ‘Since I’ve read the will I should take my leave.’
My aunt turned to him. ‘That’s it? That’s all that is there in the will? Everything belongs to her? And what about us?’
‘Well, Mr. Giovanni wanted to leave everything to their granddaughter.’
‘My daughter is also his granddaughter!’
‘But she didn’t live the old couple who missed their family. Luna did. Love only recognizes love, there’s no place for anything else in the heart.’
‘Don’t throw these fancy lines at me. You’re a lawyer. Doesn’t the law give us equal rights on the property and everything?’ My aunt sure wasn’t going to rest without getting anything. Seeing her I almost was about to ask her to take the house if she wanted for I didn’t wanted to be in middle of a family feud but the guy who’d appeared as my savior put his hand on my shoulder. When I looked at me he shook his head as is to tell me not to say what was on my mind.
‘There’s a will and you all know what is in there. If you feel discontent you can appeal in court but I’m not sure if the decision will be given in your favor.’ The lawyer ended his case, took his bag and walked out the living room with his head held high, as if he’d won in a court.
‘This is ridiculous!’ My aunt exclaimed.
‘Now that everything is sorted, when are you guys leaving?’ The guy said.
‘How dare you ask us to leave? Who do you even think you are?’
‘Oh I forgot to introduce myself properly.’ He held a hand in front of my aunt and said, ‘I’m Sole. Sole Accardi.’
‘I don’t care who you…..’ Before my aunt could unleash another one of her anger fits on the guy who said his name was Sole, my younger uncle interrupted them.
‘Accardi as the one who runs the biggest IT firms in California?’
Sole nodded at my uncle whose eyes were about to fall out of their sockets. Similar expressions could be seen on my other family members face as well.
‘What are you talking about?’ My aunt asked, clueless about the man in front of her.
‘Sister, Accardi group is the biggest player in the IT field here in the city. This guy here is nothing short of a billionaire.’ Hearing that my aunt turned to Sole and then at me.
‘So now you’ve got a billionaire boyfriend too.’
‘Aunt Maria….’ I began but stopped because I myself didn’t know what to say to her. Should I console her that not only did I inherited millions from my grandfather but also am dating a millionaire heir. I shook my head, what was I thinking? I was not dating him. I didn’t even know who he was. I was hearing his name for the first time today.
When all of us were anticipating what to say next, it was Gina still standing on the stairs, who asked, ‘Am I to get Luna’s stuff form her room or not?’
It was Sole who replied to her, ‘No need. She is staying here,’ and then he looked at me, ‘In her own home.’ When he said that, it made my heart melt. Even if he was a stranger he knew I wanted to be in my own home and nowhere else.
‘She needs someone to take care of her. Hence she cannot be alone.’ My aunt declared.
‘I think I should leave. There’s anyway nothing left for me here.’ My youngest uncle was always the first one to give up responsibility. A few hours ago he was offering me a job at his company and now he was ready to leave. Not that I mind it.
‘You will stay with me Luna, and I’m not taking no for an answer.’ Aunt Maria said. Why wasn’t Uncle Alessandro stopping her? It’s not like he would want another mouth to feed in a financial situation as his.
‘As I said, there no need for that. Luna will stay here, in her home with me.’ Sole said and my head snapped in his direction. Did he just say he was going to stay in this house?
My aunt scoffed, ‘What kind of nonsense is he spewing?’
‘There’s no way a young man could live her with Luna here alone.’ My elder uncle said affirmatively.
‘Why don’t we let Luna decide who she wants to stay with?’ Sole said folding his hands and looking confidently at me.
I gulped when I saw everyone’s expressions. My aunt looked as if she was ready to rip my head off and elder uncle looked pissed. Taking a deep breath I said my answer, which surprised me as well.
‘I will stay here….with Sole.’ Before she could even protest I said directly to my aunt, ‘All of you should leave. It’s not that you lived here anyway.’
From the corner of my eye I saw Sole giving my aunt a smug smile and I couldn’t help but feel a flutter in my heart when I saw him being proud of me like that.
