Three years ago Luna ‘…………I’ll come straight to the point, send me someone. Someone who is a guy, has lots of money and for whom, no one but I exist. Before you think if I’m high on television and web series, I’ll accept on my own that I am. But what is important right now is that I’m in dire need this someone, a savior, my savior and you need to work your magic fast for I don’t have time. Since you’re God, I’m assuming you already know my situation and my urgency when it comes to this wish. So please listen to my prayers and grant my wish as soon as possible. Yours A pathetic human created by you. P.S. If the savior is handsome I’ll give you brownie points.’ I finished writing the letter to God. Before you ask, I’ll confess myself. Yes, I’m one of those people who usually go on denying the existence of God but are the first ones to beg him to make things right when a problem arises. Pushing my wheelchair out of the doctor’s room I went near the widow at the end of the corridor and threw the crumpled paper out. Why I did that? Because a certain nurse who tended to me all this while I was in the hospital told me the story of this ‘blessed’ window. If it was true or not, I had no idea, but I saw no harm in trying especially because of the situation I was in. I waited for a while, staring out the window with hope. Was it a big explosion of light or appearance of an angel, that I was expecting, I don’t know. But I waited there for hours in hope of arrival of a savior. Next morning I opened my eyes to find a doctor hovering over me. Startled I shifted and he stepped back. ‘Luna. How do you feel now?’ ‘Better.’ I murmured. ‘Good. I’m here for the regular checkup. If you could sit up.’ I did as he asked and he checked my eyes, tongue and bruises on my forehead. ‘You’re recovering well but it would still take time for you to recover fully.’ ‘Can she go out today? It’s important.’ Someone said and I turned my attention to them, so did the doctor. ‘Well, she’s been moving through the wheelchair so she can go out but I would suggest you extra care of her, the hit she took to her abdomen was pretty serious.’ Doctor told my aunt, Maria Agosti, who now had moved near my bed.   ‘Aunt Maria, I don’t think I……’ I wanted to tell her that I would not leave the hospital but she cut me off. ‘The lawyer won’t read the will without your presence. You need to be there.’ Never in my life had I seen her being pleasant with me but it still felt bad that my own aunt, my mother’s sister, was more concerned about my grandparents will than my health. I nearly died, aren’t you concerned at all? I wanted to ask but didn’t for I knew she would say no. After the permission from the doctor, she hastily helped me change my clothes and sat me in the wheelchair to take me home, if I could still call it that. The scenario there was exactly what I was expecting it to be. All my relatives, the so-called extended family was lined up for the will-reading. There were a lot of people I didn’t even recognize. It’s true when people say that you discover new family members every time when either someone gets married or someone dies. The lawyer had already arrived and the way I was looked at my every single person in the room, I knew they were waiting for me. The lawyer cleared his throat and began, ‘Now that we all are here, I’ll begin reading the will of Mr. Alfred Giovanni. My client has stated that this mansion which was the joint property of him and his wife, should come under the ownership of his granddaughter, Luna Agosti.’ The moment he read it gasps and sighs emerged from the room. I dared not to raise my head for I knew daggers through eyes were being shot at me by now. ‘Please be silent. There’s more.’ The lawyer announced and I closed my eyes, this will be a long day. ‘Mr. Giovanni has also wished that his wine business be run by Miss Luna too.’ Sighs and curses were heard next. Please let this be the end of this will, I prayed inside. ‘About the estate, which was in his wife’s name, it is mentioned that it too be transferred to Miss Luna.’ ‘What is this nonsense!’ Aunt Maria banged her hand on the desk she was standing next to. We were all in my grandfather’s study and the already cold atmosphere grew frosty due to my aunt’s facial expressions. ‘Mrs. Maria Agosti, this is what your father’s will says. I can’t help it.’ The lawyer said. ‘How a child is supposed to take care of everything? Why aren’t any of us given anything?’ She asked appalled. I wanted to tell her why she was not given anything and that the reason had to do with her already taking so much from my grandparents and that she really wasn’t a fit for the business, but then I was not too, so I shut up even before uttering a word. ‘I’m sorry but this is what your father wanted. Besides Miss Luna isn’t a child, she’s twenty. I’m sure your parents’ thought it through.’ The lawyer replied to my aunt and moved the file in hand to mine. ‘I hope you take care of your grandparents’ legacy.’ I nodded and glanced at the will, there was nothing in it that I wanted. I was happy being with them, receiving their love, I didn’t need the estate or the business, I just needed them. I was living with my maternal grandparents since the age of five. My parents had died in a car accident and my paternal grandparents had passed away long before that. So the only people who took me in were my mother’s parents. Having three grown up kids who were busy in their own lives to look after them, my grandparents were more than happy to raise me. They felt complete and I felt home. Life was all sunshine and roses until a week ago when while returning home after celebrating my graduation, our car collided with a loaded truck and both of them died on the spot. Being the only survivor in such an accident sucks for not only did I lose two very important people in my life but I also was robbed of a chance to say goodbye to them for I woke up two days after their funeral. And just like that they were gone. The reason why I wrote that letter last night was because I knew now it was me against the three remaining siblings of my mother. And now that they knew none of them had received anything form my grandparents they will stoop to any level to take control of me, which I clearly don’t want. A man, someone who has both money and power by my side it the only option I’ve left to save myself from being at the mercy of these people. I know it sounds sexist but if I have to be free in the long run I needed a savior who could help me ward these people off from my life. ‘If father decided to trust Luna with his business then I think we should respect his decision.’ Everyone including me was surprised when my elder uncle said that but our expressions became normal when he said what everyone expected him to say, ‘But since Luna is still young and doesn’t have much experience in business, I think she should stay with my family and gain experience while working under me.’ ‘If it’s about gaining experience you can also join my company. After all I’m your family too.’ The younger uncle said. Two had started the bidding and I was waiting for the third one to begin for I knew she wouldn’t back off so easily. ‘I think Luna would be more comfortable with us. After all she has a great bonding with Gina. And I being a woman would understand her better. Right Luna?’ Aunt Maria turned to me for an answer. ‘I’m sorry Aunt Maria but I would like to stay here. This is my home and I won’t leave it.’ I said trying to sound confident. ‘Rubbish! How can a young girl live in such a big house alone? There’s no one around, it could be dangerous.’ Aunt said. ‘Aunt Maria….’ I began to protest but she brushed me off. ‘No more discussions on this. You’re coming with us.’ She then turned to Gina and said, ‘Go pack your sister’s bags. She’s coming home with us.’ ‘But…’ ‘Luna I think your aunt is right.’ Uncle Alessandro who was quiet up until now said. Of course he wanted me to come with them for all he was seeing was the money I would bring along with me. He was my father’s sibling and was exact opposite of him, that’s what grandma had told me. While my father worked hard and helped my grandfather grow his business, Uncle Alessandro gambled around and spent way more than he earned leaving his business in shambles. ‘I don’t want to leave this place.’ I said assertively but nobody paid heed to it as Gina was already on her way to my room to pack my stuff. On the verge of tears for people in my family were treating me like a pushover I tried to get up from my wheel chair thinking maybe I could run away but as soon as I tried it, my own feet refused to take my weight and my face would’ve hit the floor if a pair of arms hadn’t come to my rescue. ‘Are you okay?’ The person asked. I looked up and met a pair of concerned eyes. He helped me sit in the wheelchair again. ‘Who are you?’ My elder uncle asked before I could. The guy turned to face my family while he placed a hand on my shoulder which felt heavy and said, ‘I’m her boyfriend.’ ‘What?!’ People exclaimed and my eyes were fixated on the side of his face in pure shock. God had heard me. The letter worked. A Savior indeed arrived from the above.
