Chapter 4 — Cracks in Perfection

436 Words
The house felt different. Too quiet. Too controlled. Like it was hiding something. I walked in slowly, my steps echoing faintly against the polished floors. Everything looked the same. Perfect. Untouched. But it didn’t feel the same. “Miss Amara. I turned slightly. One of the staff gave me a small nod. “He’s in his study.” Of course he was. My heart started beating faster as I walked toward the door. Not from fear. Not exactly. But from something close to it. I knocked once. “Come in.” His voice. Calm. Controlled. The same as always. I stepped inside. Mr. Johnson sat behind his desk, reading something like nothing in the world had changed. Like he hadn’t almost died. Like everything was still under control. “You’re home,” he said, glancing up briefly. “I need to ask you something.” He set the paper down slowly. And just like that his attention was fully on me. “What is it?” I hesitated. Just for a second. Because once I said it… there was no taking it back. “Do you know someone named Adrian Cole?” Something shifted. Barely noticeable. But I saw it. And that was enough. His expression hardened slightly. “Where did you hear that name? That wasn’t denial. “I met him,” I said. Silence. Then “Stay away from him.” Again. The same reaction The same control. “Why?” I asked, stepping closer. “He’s not someone you need in your life. “That’s not what I asked. His jaw tightened. “Did you do something to his family? The question hung in the air. Heavy. Dangerous. For the first time in my life… my father didn’t answer immediately. “Amara Yes or no. Silence. And in that silence… everything started breaking. “It’s not that simple,” he said finally. That was it. That was the moment. Because if it wasn’t simple… then it was true. “What did you do?” my voice dropped, my chest tightening. “I did what I had to do. The words felt cold. Calculated. “For what?” I asked. “To protect what matters. “And who decides that?I snapped. “You?” His eyes darkened. “Yes.” I stared at him. Really stared. And for the first time… I didn’t recognize the man in front of me. “You lied to me,” I whispered. “I protected you.” “That’s not the same thing.” It is when the truth would destroy you. Too late. Because it already was.
