Chapter 1 — It Started With a Lie
It started with a lie. Not the harmless kind people tell to avoid awkward conversations. Not the soft kind that fades with time. No. The kind that wraps itself around your life so tightly that by the time you notice it… it’s already too late. The mansion was alive with noise. Laughter bounced off crystal walls, music hummed low and expensive, and conversations flowed like wine smooth, rehearsed, and fake. I hated it. Every second of it. But I stood there anyway. Because that’s what was expected of me. “Amara, smile.” My father didn’t even look at me when he said it. He didn’t need to. His voice alone carried authority. Expectation. Control. I lifted the corners of my lips just enough to pass. “Not like you’re in pain,” he added. I resisted the urge to sigh. “There,” he said after a second, satisfied. “Better.” Better. Everything with him had to be better. Perfect. Presentable. Controlled. I scanned the room, my eyes moving over people who looked polished on the outside but hollow underneath. Business partners. Politicians. People who smiled too much and meant too little. This wasn’t a party. It was a performance. And I was tired of playing my role. “I’m getting some air,” I said quietly. He didn’t respond immediately. Which meant he was thinking. Calculating. Finally “Don’t be long.” That was permission. In his own way. The moment I stepped onto the balcony, I felt like I could breathe again. The cool night air brushed against my skin, grounding me. Real. Unlike everything inside. I rested my hands against the railing, staring out into the dark city beyond. Lights flickered in the distance. Freedom, maybe. Or just another illusion. “You look like you’re planning an escape. The voice came from behind me. Calm. Low. Unfamiliar. I turned. And everything shifted. He stood there like he didn’t belong to the chaos inside. Relaxed. Unbothered. Dangerous in a quiet way. Dark suit, slightly undone like rules didn’t apply to him. His gaze met mine. Steady. Unapologetic. “Is it that obvious?” I asked. He took a step closer. “Only to people who know what it feels like.” That made me pause. Because that wasn’t a normal answer. “And you do?” I asked carefully. A small smile touched his lips. “More than I’d like to.” There was something about him. Not just his presence. But the way he spoke. Like every word had weight. Like he was choosing what to reveal… and what to hide. “I’m Amara,” I said. He didn’t respond immediately. His eyes studied me for a second longer than necessary. Like he was confirming something. Or recognizing me. “Adrian,” he finally said. The name lingered. We talked. And it didn’t feel forced. No awkward pauses. No empty compliments. Just conversation that felt… real. He didn’t ask about my father. Didn’t try to impress me. Didn’t even pretend to care about the status of this place. And somehow… that made him stand out more than anyone else in that room. “You don’t belong here,” he said after a while. I tilted my head slightly. “Everyone keeps saying that tonight. “No, he corrected gently. “They think it. I just said it out loud.” I let out a quiet breath. “And where do I belong?” His gaze softened slightly. “With people who don’t treat you like an extension of something else.” That hit deeper than I expected. Because it was true. And I hated how easily he saw through me. “Amara. My father’s voice cut through the moment. Sharp. Immediate. I turned. He stood at the entrance, watching us. Watching him. And for the first time… there was something unfamiliar in his expression. Tension. “I need you,” he said. Not a request. A command. I looked back at Adrian. He had already stepped away. Like he understood the rules. Like he had seen this dynamic before. “Go,” he said quietly Something in me hesitated. And I didn’t understand why. But I turned anyway. Because I always did “What were you doing with him?” my father asked once we were alone. “Talking.” His jaw tightened. “Stay away from that man.” That made me stop. “Why?” “Because I said so.” “That’s not an answer.” “It’s the only one you need. But it wasn’t enough. Not this time. “Who is he?” I pressed. Silence. Then “Someone dangerous.” That word didn’t scare me. It made me curious. Later that night, I found him again. Or maybe… he found me. “You came back,” Adrian said, his voice quieter now. “Maybe I wanted to.” He stepped closer. Too close. “You shouldn’t.” “Why?” His eyes darkened slightly. “Because I didn’t come here by accident.” Before I could ask what he meant a loud crash shattered the room. Everything stopped. Then a scream. I turned. And my world fell apart My father was on the ground. Blood spreading beneath him. “Dad!” I ran. Pushed through the crowd. Dropped beside him. But he wasn’t moving. And just before everything blurred I felt it. A hand brushing against mine. I looked up. Adrian. But this time there was nothing in his eyes. No shock. No fear. No concern Just… calm That’s when it hit me. This wasn’t random. And meeting him… was never part of the plan.
