updated paperwork

Absolutely," Mrs. Marta replied, her voice unwavering. "The matron is faxing over the updated paperwork right now. It should be here any minute. In the meantime, I suggest you check with your superiors before you proceed with this arrest." The officers hesitated, clearly unsure of what to do. They looked at each other, then at Lorien, who was now seething with frustration. "This is ridiculous!" Lorien exclaimed, his face red with anger. "She's a criminal! You can't just let her go!" The officers ignored him and stepped back, conferring in hushed tones. After a few minutes, one of them approached Mrs. Marta. "We'll wait for the fax," he said, his voice more polite than before. "But if this paperwork doesn't arrive, we'll have to take her into custody." Mrs. Marta nodded, her heart pounding in her chest. She glanced at Elowen, offering a small, reassuring smile. The next few minutes felt like an eternity. The restaurant was silent, the tension palpable. Everyone waited with bated breath for the arrival of the fax. Finally, the fax machine whirred to life, spitting out a sheet of paper. Mrs. Marta snatched it up and quickly scanned the document. Her eyes widened with relief. "Here it is!" she announced, her voice triumphant. "The updated paperwork. It clearly states that Elowen has permission to work at Mart'S Kitchen as part of her parole agreement." She handed the document to the officers, who examined it carefully. After a moment, they nodded in agreement. "It seems everything is in order," one of the officers said, his voice apologetic. "We're sorry for the misunderstanding." He removed the handcuffs from Elowen's wrists, offering a curt nod of apology. "You're free to go, Ms. Sinclair" Elowen rubbed her wrists, her eyes filled with disbelief and gratitude. She looked at Mrs. Marta, her heart overflowing with emotion. "Thank you," she whispered, tears welling up in her eyes. "Thank you for believing in me." Mrs. Marta smiled. With Elowen's name cleared and the police gone, the atmosphere in Marta's Kitchen remained charged with tension. Mrs. Marta, though relieved, was still visibly shaken. She turned her attention to Lorien, who was fuming in the corner, his face a mask of frustrated rage. "And now, Mr. Lorien," she said, her voice firm and unwavering, "I believe you and I have some unfinished business." Lorien scoffed. "What are you going to do, old woman? Threaten me with your spatula?" Mrs. Marta's eyes narrowed. "I'm going to do what any responsible citizen would do," she replied. "I'm going to file charges against you for disturbing the peace, defamation, and for knowingly making false accusations to law enforcement." Lorien burst out laughing. "You're bluffing," he sneered. "You can't prove anything." "Oh, I think I can," Mrs. Marta retorted, her voice laced with steel. "I have witnesses. Everyone in this restaurant saw what you did and heard what you said. They know you were deliberately trying to cause trouble and ruin Elowen's life." She turned to the other customers, who nodded their heads in agreement, their faces filled with indignation. "Besides," she continued, "I have a feeling the police will be very interested in talking to you about your possible motives for wanting to get Elowen arrested. Maybe they'll even start looking into other things... things that you might prefer to keep hidden." She let her words hang in the air, her gaze unwavering. Lorien's face paled. He realized that he had underestimated Mrs. Marta. She was not just a sweet old woman; she was a force to be reckoned with. He opened his mouth to say something, but then thought better of it. He knew that he was defeated, at least for now. With a final glare at Elowen and Mrs. Marta, he turned and stormed out of the restaurant, his face a mask of fury and frustration. As the door slammed shut behind him, Mrs Marta let out a long, shaky breath. The tension in the restaurant began to dissipate, replaced by a sense of relief and renewed camaraderie. She turned to Elowen, her expression softening with compassion. "Are you alright, dear?" she asked, her voice filled with concern. Elowen nodded, tears streaming down her face. "Yes," she said, her voice trembling. "Thank you, Mrs. Marta. You saved me." Mrs. Marta embraced her tightly. "Nonsense," she said. "You're a good person, Elowen. I knew it from the moment I met you. I wasn't going to let that man ruin your life based on lies and accusations." She stepped back and wiped the tears from Elowen's face. "Now," she said, her voice regaining its usual warmth, "let's get back to work. We have customers to serve, and I have a feeling we're going to be very busy tonight." As the day wore on, the story of what had happened at Marta's Kitchen spread like wildfire through the small town. People were outraged by Lorien's behavior and impressed by Mrs. Marta's courage and loyalty. That evening, the restaurant was packed with customers, all eager to show their support. They came to enjoy Mrs. Marta's delicious food and to offer words of encouragement to Elowen. As Elowen worked alongside Mrs. Marta, serving customers and chatting with regulars, she felt a sense of belonging and acceptance that she had never experienced before. She knew that she had finally found a place where she was truly valued and appreciated, not for who she had been, but for who she was. Later that night, after the last customer had left and the restaurant was finally quiet, Mrs. Marta sat down with Elowen at a small table in the corner. "You know, dear," Mrs. Marta said, her eyes twinkling with mischief, "I think it's time you told me about your past. I deserve to know the truth, and I promise I won't judge you."
