Chapter 1
No one in the pack ever noticed Rowan. That was the way it had always been. While the other wolves laughed and celebrated in the great hall of the packhouse, Rowan stayed close to the walls, quietly doing the tasks no one else wanted. Cleaning, carrying supplies, tending small wounds—jobs that barely earned a glance of thanks. Tonight was no different. The hunters had returned victorious, bringing down a massive stag deep in the northern forest. The pack feasted loudly around the long wooden tables, mugs clashing together while stories of the hunt filled the room. Rowan moved through the crowd unseen, collecting empty plates. A hunter winced nearby, clutching his arm. “Hold still,” Rowan said gently. They guided the wolf toward a chair and wrapped a clean cloth around the bleeding gash. Rowan’s hands were steady, careful. They had learned long ago that kindness was easier than trying to be strong. “Thanks,” the hunter muttered before quickly returning to the celebration. Rowan smiled faintly. They turned toward the hearth to throw the bloodied cloth away— “Wait.” The single word froze the entire room. Rowan slowly turned. Alpha Matthew stood near the doorway, tall and imposing, his dark coat still dusted with snow from patrol. His sharp silver eyes were locked directly on Rowan. The room fell silent. It wasn’t often the Alpha addressed anyone during celebrations. It was even rarer that he addressed Rowan. “You treated the hunters’ wounds,” Matthew said. Rowan lowered their gaze immediately. “They needed help.” Matthew studied them for a moment. His wolf stirred uneasily beneath his calm exterior. Rowan smelled… strange. Not weak. Not submissive. But something soft and grounding, like rain on warm stone. It made his wolf restless. Before Matthew could say anything else, the doors of the packhouse swung open. A new scent flooded the room. Powerful. Confident. Dangerous. Alpha Damien stepped inside. Gasps rippled through the pack. The Alpha of the neighboring Mooncrest pack rarely visited—and never without warning. Damien brushed snow from his coat with effortless confidence, golden eyes scanning the room. Then he stopped. His gaze landed on Rowan. His wolf surged forward instantly. Interesting. Damien walked closer, ignoring the tension spreading through the hall. “And who is this?” he asked smoothly. Rowan instinctively stepped back. “No one important,” someone in the pack muttered. Damien’s brow lifted. “Is that so?” His eyes flicked toward Kael. But Matthew was already watching Rowan. Both Alphas were. Rowan felt the weight of their attention and wished the floor would swallow them whole. Two Alphas. Looking directly at them. For the first time in their life… Rowan had been noticed
