You’ve probably heard of the huge advances many best selling authors get when they sell a new book. But if you’re publishing with a small or electronic press, particularly one which doesn’t pay advances, don’t anticipate large checks, at least not at first. My first paycheck with an electronic publisher was more than I had ever made self-publishing, but this was because e-books are cheaper than print books and sell more copies. Also, the electronic publisher had better distribution and marketing than I did as a self-publisher. And it wasn’t easy to make more with my first e-book because, quite frankly, my first print sales were dismal.
