As he ticked off the distance in his head, the hand holding Arenite’s reins started shaking at the same time his breathing hitched, turning difficult and uneven. Slowing the horse, Todd guided him to the roadside and sat there, hunched over the saddle pommel, gripping it as if he were falling off a cliff and that was his only savior. Nick was alone and at the mercy of the kelbit. Todd wiped a hand over his face, closed his eyes, and took a few deep breaths, forcing his hands to steady and his insides to quiet.
