Chapter One
Maya's POV
Growing up, I have always had issues expressing myself. It was as if there was this barrier stopping me from being able to express myself or connect with people. I have always carried a burden on my shoulders, secret shadows whispering in my ears.
I have never really understood myself, never got what made me so irritated at the thought of my fellow humans. That irritating smell that came from their lies and the stench that came from their deceits.
I have always just wanted to be normal, to be a person my dad could be proud of. To be someone that goes to parties and has late nights out. I just…
"Anderson," my father yelled, "you will be late for school again, you have just five minutes to get your ass down here, woman."
"Coming," I shouted. I had been on my bed for the past hour, forgetting that I had a hellhole to get to. School was just something that did not make any sense to me. All the knowledge I needed I could get from the internet. I did not need to go to a place where I had to be stuck with weird humans for seven hours. It was infuriating, but my father would hear none of that.
"Maya, I hope you are done getting ready and just putting on some shoes, because if I get there, you will be toast," my dad shouted again.
"Can't he just leave me alone?" I muttered, hitting my leg on the dresser. I left my room and shut the door behind me, dressed in an oversized graphic tee and leggings.
Running down the dark mahogany stairs, I tripped at the last stair for the umpteenth time this month. I heard something chuckle, and I turned to check if by magic there was an extra female in this house that I had no idea of. Maybe my dad had finally taken my advice and brought a girl home, or a woman to be precise, because bringing a girl would be extremely weird since she would be my age and all. But I saw no one.
"Hmm... Weird."
I walked into the living room and saw my dad sipping tea and scanning through a newspaper.
"Good morning, Dad," I greeted.
"Hmph... So you do know how to come down from your room. I had thought you were not going to school today, seeing as it is 8:30 and you had almost missed one entire period."
I just shrugged my shoulders because that was exactly what I wanted, to miss an entire day of school.
"Maya, you are in your senior year already. You need to snap out of whatever phase this is. It has gone on long enough."
"Yes, Dad," I murmured. I put my hands around his shoulders. "So, what is for breakfast?"
After a very satisfying meal of pancakes with syrup, courtesy of my amazing dad as always, I decided to take a walk to school. By the time I got there, it was already the end of the third period. That meant I had missed calculus, and we were having electives next.
On my way to my art class, I saw Cassandra and her two minions mocking a girl. I think the girl Leah had a thing for Cassandra's best friend Josh or something like that. Cass had been bullying her all through last year and had started again this year. I had never intervened, and I probably never would, so I planned to walk past.
But luck was definitely not on my side today because the dirty garbage water that Lisa, one of Cassandra's minions, was meant to pour on Leah touched my shoes. And I just erupted.
"WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH YOU!!!"
"Are you blind or something? Do you think you can treat everyone anyhow just because you like Josh and he does not like you? We all know that he just pities you because you are so pathetic that you do not have anyone you can rely on, and you have been friends for years already, that is why he keeps tolerating you!" I heaved out with short breaths.
"And also, do you think those girls behind you are really your friends? Just the other day I heard Lisa talking to Reya, the school slut, about how loose you are and how you sleep with every one of your male teachers and give the female ones money just to get an A. And Tori was the one who told your ex that you had herpes and made him break up with you in front of the whole school."
After my rant, Cassandra looked livid and completely furious. She turned to look at Lisa and Tori with laser eyes.
"Is she telling the truth?"
They both looked too shocked to respond. I just continued walking to my next class, but not before wondering what the hell had happened to me.
