Chapter One
“Annette, you’re going to be late again”, Lyanna bellowed from downstairs and I could tell she was in the kitchens this time, probably packing extra lunch for herself. “I’m coming”, I answered back. I grabbed my laptop, project files and my notepad. I had my master thesis due soon and I wanted to get started pretty early.
I marched downstairs and I was right, Lyanna was packing extra lunch. “You know, you’re gonna get fat one day with all these extra food”, I teased. Lyanna rolled her eyes at me and said, “Werewolves do not get fat. We also need this extra food to keep our metabolism running” I chuckled and she smiled too. She grabbed the last of her things and we headed out the door. The wave of hot air hit us immediately.
Usually, it was cold this time of year but this was the Indiana region, home to the MoonRiver Werewolf Clan, a heat wolf pack. This place had been home as far as I can remember and since it’s quite a distance from the human city down the hill, you either caught the only bus going into the city at 7:30am or you walked. Lyanna didn’t really like to walk especially when she could run so we mostly tried to make the bus every morning.
“Do you think Jacob and Bella would be in the store this morning?”, Lyanna asked, querying whether the owners of the coffee shop where I worked would be around this morning. “They are usually busy in the mornings so I don’t think so”, Lyanna sighed. We exchanged knowing looks and burst into laughter. “Honestly, lovely couple and all but 6 children in 10 years, that man better get off her”, Lyanna chirped, still laughing. “I don’t think she stays off him either”, I replied, also laughing and wheezing. They got to the bus station and found the bus waiting. They paid the fare and took their seats, Annette sitting by the window.
“You know, if I do find my mate, though I really doubt it, I think I might be all over him too, like that”, Lyanna said with a wistful expression on her face. Lyanna was a 24 year old, same age as I was but in wolf years, that’s old since most wolves found their mates at 18 and settled by 22. Lyanna was the only daughter to Alpha and Luna Lockhart of the LockMight Werewolf clan in Oceania which is continents away. They came to America when Lyanna was born after a long war with a rival ravaged most of their homes and the pack was sent out of their land. It was a shameful thing in the wolf world for an alpha to live in another pack that has an existing alpha but Alpha Lockhart had no choice. He was mostly away for vigilance and undercover tasks for the MoonRiver Clan so Lyanna and I barely saw him.
I was adopted by Lyanna’s parents shortly after they arrived in MoonRiver when Lyanna’s mom found me. The family as a whole faced a lot of pain and insecurity especially from the pack since the MoonRiver clan doesn’t really care for humans and I, being human, know how much the Lockhart family endured for my sake. I sighed back and told her “He’s somewhere and you’d find him one day”, smiling at her. “At least, you have a mate, we humans have to date all the seven sons of pharaoh before finding one not so mediocre man to love and marry, what a shame”, I sighed dramatically. We shared a look again and burst out laughing again.
I smiled at Lyanna, looking at her bright hazel eyes and long lashes that framed them beautifully with her fiery auburn hair falling across her face and framing it delicately. Lyanna was more beautiful than the most beautiful human I’ve ever seen. Most wolves are, and her carriage and set posture also made her appear taller than her 5’9 frame and confident. Lyanna was beautiful.
As her sister, most people see us and assume I was adopted immediately especially since my hair grew in a platinum blonde color, the type that you can’t attain without bleaching severally, vivid purple eyes and long blonde lashes that frame them. I stood at a similar height of 5’10 and with my pale white skin, most people say I looked ethereal, otherworldly or sick.
I remembered a time when a customer at the coffee shop convinced himself I was an elf princess on the run. It got me a lot of laughs and tips too so I didn’t mind. I’m not an elf, that is if they even exist. I’m human, though I recognize that I'm stronger than the strongest male human my age and I'm faster too, I’m human. The MoonRiver clan never let me forgot that, especially when the Lockharts are not around. I got treated even worse than the omegas of the pack.
The bus rounded a bend and Lyanna pushed the stop button so she can get off. She worked at a Daycare and Nursery for little kids and enjoyed her job, especially since she has mentioned many times that she wanted a big family since she was the only child. “Keep your phone on at all times and text me if anything out of the ordinary happens”, I chuckled and she scowled “Annette Rutherford, I mean it! Anything at all, tell me”, “Yes mum” I responded and smiled at her, Lyanna draws me close and kisses my hair, “Take care”, My smile deepened and I responded “You too, Lyanna”.
I watched her as she gets off and I noticed her absence immediately. I waved at her until the bus drove out of sight so I settled in again. This had been Lyanna and I’s life ever since we graduated from the pack high school and enrolled in the community college a few years back. It’s been years since then, with me having graduated and gone ahead to attend the state university in the same town and Lyanna choosing to work at the daycare.
The bus rounded the second bend close to my stop and I pulled the stop button so I can get off. I got off and felt the cold air this time. I don’t know how it worked but up the mountains, at the pack house, it’s always hot and down here in Laveon, it’s usually cold.
I walked a few blocks to get to the coffee shop and i opened the stop, turned on the “Now open” sign and started to prepare for the day. I sighed contentedly. Today is a new day
