Chapter 1
"Don, I can't take two! It'll kill me!"
Inside the interview room, the fox heiress who had been mocking me as an "ignorant human bumpkin" only seconds ago let out a bloodcurdling scream.
The cat-shifter heiress went deathly pale and scrambled backward on all fours. "I'm withdrawing from the bride-selection interview! Please, let me go!"
I stood there, utterly dumbfounded.
Wait... I'd come to interview for a high-paying executive assistant position at Viper Group so I could cover some medical bills. How had I wandered into a snake-shifter mafia don's bride-selection interview instead?
Who in their right mind selected his wife through interviews?
Before I could sneak away, however, a wave of savage, scorching snake pheromones swept through the room.
Then a miracle happened.
The heat that had tormented my body year-round—a condition top doctors had diagnosed as a genetic defect—vanished the moment his terrifying presence washed over me.
For the first time in years, I felt completely at ease.
My eyes lit up. Under everyone's horrified gaze, I threw myself into the arms of the furious Don Lucas.
"If they don't want you, I do! Don Lucas, pick me!"
******
The ferocious heat poured through my pores and flooded my body.
The instant it touched the fever burning inside me, the fire vanished as if it had finally met its natural enemy.
Every cell in my body sang with relief.
It felt incredible.
I almost moaned out loud.
The room fell dead silent.
Lucas went completely rigid.
After a long pause, his gravelly voice cut through the silence. "Are you done clinging to me?"
He slowly lowered his head. His features were sharp and striking, but his eyes were cold, bloodthirsty slits of crimson.
Heat shimmered visibly around him, while a crushing, primal pressure radiated from below his waist.
The mafia don was in a feral rut.
No wonder the two heiresses had fled in terror.
But to me, how could he possibly be a monster?
"Scared stupid?" Seeing me remain pressed against his chest, Lucas gave me a brutal look. "Another worthless woman who's lost her nerve. Get out."
His murderous aura could have made anyone else faint on the spot.
But as he spoke, his scorching breath slipped into my lungs again, sending a delicious tingle through every limb.
"Get out? Why would I do that?"
Instead of backing away, I grabbed the back of his head and crushed my lips against his firm, burning mouth.
I inhaled.
As deeply as I could.
His rich, burning pheromones poured into me with every breath I stole from his lips. A soft moan of pleasure escaped me.
The violent energy surrounding him abruptly stilled. He seized my waist, his voice rough with heat. "Do you have any idea what you're doing? Are you trying to die?"
Face flushed and breath coming hard, I locked my arms around his neck. My voice was sweet but unwavering. "I'm not trying to die. I came here for an interview, Don Lucas."
"For what position?" His stare bored into me.
I leaned close to his tense ear and whispered, "I was applying to be your executive assistant... but I've changed my mind. Now I'm applying to be your wife."
The cat heiress, who had not yet crawled very far, stared until her eyes nearly popped out. "Are you insane? You're actually throwing yourself at that monster?"
A monster?
Lucas's gaze turned glacial. Killing intent surged around him as he aimed the dark muzzle of a gun at the doorway. "Do you have a death wish, Chloe?"
Chloe's face went white. "Don Lucas... no! Don't kill me! I was wrong. I swear I'll never say that again!"
Without a trace of emotion in his eyes, Lucas began to pull the trigger.
Feeling death close in, Chloe turned desperately to me as Lucas held me against him. "Elena! Please, put in a good word for me! I shouldn't have mocked you. Please save me—I don't want to die!"
Lucas paused. "She's begging you. What do you want me to do?"
I couldn't help feeling sorry for her. "Chloe has realized her mistake. Why not spare her life?"
Amusement flickered across Lucas's face. "She'll live, but she won't go unpunished. Strip her of her noble status and assign her to the manor as its lowest-ranking maid."
Chloe's features twisted for a split second before she forced them into an expression of gratitude. "Thank you, Don Lucas! Thank you, Elena!"
At Lucas's signal, his bodyguards dragged Chloe away.
The once-chaotic interview room emptied in moments, leaving Lucas and me alone.
His commanding scent still filled the air, soothing every inch of my body.
Lucas pinned me against the desk. "You forced a kiss on me and applied to be my wife. Were you serious?"
"Of course. I swear it." I tipped my face up and drew in another deep breath of his dense, scorching pheromones. Relief rushed through me, and I sighed. "I like you, Don Lucas. I love the way you smell."
Every word came straight from the heart. No one in the world could have been a better antidote for me than Lucas.
Lucas shuddered, his eyes widening as if he couldn't believe I'd said I liked his scent.
"If you're sincere, prove it." Lucas pulled out a trial marriage agreement. "Sign this. If you lie to me, change your mind, or try to run... I'll skin you myself."
One look at the staggering salary listed in the contract, and I signed my name without hesitation.
It paid me and cured me. Only a fool would turn that down.
"Someone get her ready," Lucas ordered. "Have her brought to my bed tonight."
