Chapter 1: The Midnight Patient
Nora Kendrick woke up to the aggressive buzzing of her alarm at exactly 5:00 PM.
The thick Lancaster commuter traffic crawled like a wounded animal as she drove to her shift.
Walking into the staff lounge, she chatted with her coworker, Sarah, about her weekend plans.
"It’s a full moon tonight, but it feels like a slow night in the ER," Sarah remarked, pouring coffee.
By hour three of her shift, the quiet air inside the hospital began to shift rapidly.
The head charge nurse called Nora over to help clean up the back trauma rooms immediately.
A sudden, high-priority emergency alert flashed bright crimson across the central monitor grid.
The radio scanner screamed that a massive, multi-car pile-up had just decimated the northbound freeway.
"All hands on deck," the intercom bellowed, scattering the medical staff into position.
Nora spent the next eight hours working non-stop, treating fractured bones and stabilizing bleeding trauma victims.
By her final hour, the endless wave of incoming patients had completely stopped.
The sudden, eerie silence inside the sterile trauma bay made Nora deeply uneasy.
Her internal wolf witch instincts flared, whispering a dark warning that something terrible was coming.
Over the radio, she heard whispers that rescue teams were still pulling survivors from the deep wreckage.
Nora began gathering her personal belongings, desperate to clock out and escape the heavy atmosphere.
Suddenly, her boss grabbed her arm, informing her that a high-priority ambulance had just breached the bay gates.
"Nora, I desperately need your help right now," her boss pleaded, blocking the exit door.
"The trauma wing is completely overwhelmed, and you're the only qualified nurse available on this floor."
Nora shook her head in exhaustion, gesturing to her packed bag. "I just clocked out after a brutal twelve-hour shift."
"Please, Nora, there is absolutely no one else left to handle this upcoming emergency arrival."
Nora sighed heavily, adjusting her scrubs. "Fine, but the exact second this patient is stabilized, I am going straight home."
"Deal, that's completely fine," her boss agreed, instantly rushing her down the central corridor.
"Here he comes right now," the boss whispered as the heavy pneumatic garage doors violently hissed open.
A towering, bleeding man emerged through the rain, surrounded closely by five imposing guards in expensive tailored suits.
The heavily built men kept their hands near their shoulder holsters, refusing to let him out of their sight for a single second.
My boss stepped forward with trembling hands, loudly informing the guard captain that they were currently prepping the primary OR.
"We are actively waiting for the head trauma surgeon to arrive on the scene," the boss explained frantically.
"This is Nora, our elite trauma specialist, and she will be taking full clinical care of him until then."
Nora stepped up to the Gurney, commanding firmly that she needed to execute a proper medical examination immediately.
"He needs a completely private, isolated room away from the main public floor," the leading bodyguard growled sub-audibly.
The boss nodded rapidly in submission. "Yes, of course, we will bypass standard intake procedures."
"Take him directly to the secure Executive Suite on the restricted top floor," the boss ordered Nora.
Nora locked the brakes on the transport bed. "Can you place him gently on this stretcher right now?"
"I need to take him to the elevator bays immediately to stabilize his breathing," Nora commanded the unit.
The guard captain stepped into her personal space. "Lead the way, nurse, because we are all going inside with you."
"Okay, follow me straight to the private elevators," Nora said, her internal wolf witch instincts flaring in warning.
Pushing the bed into the Executive Suite, Nora turned to the suits. "I need all of you to step outside the sterile field immediately."
"No," the captain snarled, stepping directly in front of the door. "We don’t leave his side under any circumstances."
Nora matched his dangerous glare with hard clinical focus. "Do you want me to save his life or not?"
Turning to the patient, Nora grabbed her heavy medical shears to cut the shredded fabric of his shirt away.
Her breath hitched as she saw his muscular chest was completely torn open by massive, smoking claw marks.
As she stepped closer to evaluate the trauma, her bare fingers accidentally brushed against the burning edge of the laceration.
A violent, blinding bolt of fated-mate magic exploded through her core, instantly shattering her internal scent camouflage.
The raw invisible force of the bond violently pulled her down flat against his broad, bare chest.
Nora pushed away in pure psychological shock, reeling backward against the stainless-steel instrument cart.
She stared in terror at his golden eyes as he suddenly laid there looking directly at her with heavy, tired focus.
"Mate," Hector rasped out in a low, possessive register before his eyelids failed, and he drifted off to sleep.
Panicking for her survival, Nora forced her hands to move, cleaning the deep silver-poisoned wounds as fast as humanly possible.
She retreated into the furthest dark corner of the suite, waiting anxiously for the arrival of the medical doctor.
Once the chief surgeon reached the room, Nora quickly stepped up and informed him of the patient's critical structural condition.
She turned to exit the bay, but the doctor grabbed a fresh gown. "Nora, I need you to assist with this emergency surgery."
Nora opened her mouth to decline, but the doctor cut her off. "You can't say no, we are dangerously short-handed as it is."
She forced her mind to completely ignore the terrifying reality that the Lycan Court's Sovereign Executioner was her fated mate.
Moving on pure clinical instinct, she stood over the operating table and helped save his life for the next three hours.
The second the last suture was tied, Nora walked straight out to the scrub sinks to wash up and run.
Suddenly, her boss came running down the corridor, her face pale. "Nora, get back inside, there’s an immediate problem!"
Nora rushed back into the Executive Suite, only for Hector's chaotic vital monitors to instantly stabilize the moment her feet crossed the threshold.
The five bodyguards stepped into a rigid defensive line, locking the exit locks. "No one leaves this room alive."
They demanded to know why their boss's heart rate flatlined every time Nora stepped past the room's perimeter boundary.
Nora attempted to force her way past the physical barrier, but the towering guards stood unyielding in her way.
She realized with a sinking heart that she had absolutely no choice but to stay trapped inside his cage.
The hospital boss and the chief surgeon frantically explained to the guards that a traumatic silver-poison recovery could cause multiple physiological fluctuations.
Satisfied that the immediate danger had passed, the guard captain allowed the hospital boss to leave the suite first.
They waited ten more highly tense minutes before finally letting the head trauma surgeon exit the floor.
Next, the chief surgical resident was evaluated and allowed to clear the security checkpoint.
The second floor nurse was scanned, approved, and allowed to slip out into the main hallway.
It was finally Nora's turn to step toward the exit when Hector’s golden eyes snapped open in the dark, his massive hand flying out to grab her wrist.
Hector violently yanked the line, pulling Nora flat against his broad chest once again.
She yelled at him to let her go, her voice echoing off the sterile walls.
Hector kept his golden irises locked on her face as he coldly ordered his men to leave the room.
"My mate," he growled, his deep voice dropping to a dangerous register. "Did you really think you could escape me?"
Nora forced her tone to remain steady. "I don't know what you're talking about, I'm just your nurse."
"You're my fated mate, rogue wolf," Hector rasped, his steel fingers tightening like a vice.
"I can smell the pure, intoxicating scent of your hidden witchcraft bleeding through that clinical mask."
Nora panicked, realizing she was trapped on one side of the hospital room while he was stuck on that bed.
Her heart rate felt like it flatlined as her wide eyes desperately scanned the suite, looking for an emergency exit.
"There is nowhere to go, little witch, you are permanently stuck in this cage with me," he smirked.
Suddenly, her sharp gaze locked onto the bright red plastic fire alarm toggle on the back wall.
She took one last, breathless look at his dangerous golden irises and rushed forward to pull the alarm.
The overhead ceiling sprinklers instantly detonated, raining water across the bay as his men came running back into the room.
Nora used the blinding chaos of water and sirens to slip past the guard captain and rush out the door.
Behind her, Hector’s furious roar echoed through the corridor, yelling at his men to go after her.
"She’s my mate!" he bellowed into the emergency strobes, slamming his fist onto the guard rails.
But Nora was already inside the private elevator bay, watching the steel doors slide shut.
The elevator descended rapidly into the sub-levels, dropping her straight into the pitch-black boiler room.
She leaned against a rusted steam pipe, frantically trying to think of a way to escape the locked building.
Cold dread washed over her as she realized her human safety net was dead, and she could never come back here.
Nora hid in the farthest, darkest corner of the sub-basement, knowing with absolute certainty that he would find her within minutes.
