Episode1-masquerade of shadows
The chandeliers glowed like a bunch of little stars, throwing shards of light across the room, everyone half-hidden behind masks and half-whispered secrets. Venice was alive tonight—her canals trembling under all the secrets everyone seemed to be carrying. From the balcony, Elena watched it all—the wolves dressed up in silk, their grins just a bit too sharp for comfort. Another charity auction, her dad muttered behind her—not that he was fooled for a second. "Remember why you’re here, Elena. Smile at the right guy and we keep the company running." Elena’s nails dug into the balcony rail. She hated these parties—the fake smiles, the gentle cruelty everyone wore like another accessory. But she wore her own disguise well enough. Her crimson dress clung to her, sinfully, and the glittery mask over her eyes was half-glamorous, half-warning. “Don’t look so miserable,” came a low, teasing voice at her elbow. Her cousin Isabella, lips curved with some secret joke. “Tonight’s about power. And if you play your cards right… maybe a little pleasure.” Elena shot her a look. “If pleasure means dancing with guys who think I’m just the sum of my dowry, hard pass.” Isabella’s playful smile faded a bit. “Just… be careful, okay? Someone’s watching you.” That got Elena’s attention. She turned, and for a split second, the whole world just… paused. Across the ballroom, half-lost in a haze of golden light, was a man she’d never seen before. No mask, nothing to hide behind. Just those eyes—dark, sharp, like he was enjoying a private joke at her expense. A hot surge of something twisted up her back—anger, curiosity, something sharper. Who the hell does he think he is? “Who is that?” Elena whispered. Isabella glanced over and actually went a little pale. “Elena, trust me. You really don’t want to know.” But of course, Elena did. Before she could go after him, the music picked up, and the crowd swallowed him like he’d never been there. She told herself to let it go. Tonight was about survival. Keep the company afloat, keep her family’s world from falling apart. But when a low, velvety voice brushed past her ear—just a whisper, smooth and dangerous—every logical thought vanished. “Careful, little dove. Curiosity kills.” She spun around—he was close. Way too close. She caught his scent: smoke, leather, something that made her heart hammer even faster. And up close, well. It was worse. His face was all sharp lines and shadows, devilish and magnetic. Those eyes—black as night, cold, but not uninterested. Elena straightened, desperately trying to sound as put-together as she didn’t feel. “You should be wearing a mask. That’s kind of the point tonight.” His mouth curled, slow and dangerous. “I don’t hide.” “Maybe you should.” “Maybe you like that I don’t.” God, the nerve. She hated arrogant men, smirking like the world was their plaything. And yet… her heart was pounding like mad. “Who are you?” she snapped. His gaze dropped to her mouth, stayed there too long, then wandered back up. “Someone you should probably run from.” “So why are you here?” He shrugged, cool as ice. “Wanted to see if you’d actually try.” Before Elena could fire back, chaos erupted. A gunshot cracked through the ballroom—sharp, violent, destroying the music and dropping a chandelier in a hail of glass. Screams tore through the space, panic sweeping the crowd. Pure instinct took over. Elena turned for the exits—only to feel someone clamp onto her wrist, iron-strong. “Not that way,” he growled in her ear. “Let me go!” “Unless you want to die, just trust me.” Her heart was going to burst. Smoke was already winding through the air, stinging her eyes and throat. People stumbled everywhere, trampling fallen masks. He dragged her through the mayhem like he’d done it a hundred times—down a side corridor, dodging panicked guests and slipping through servant’s halls. Elena yanked at his grip. “Where the hell are we going?” “Someplace you can breathe.” “I don’t even know your name—” “Adrian.” The word was sharp, a warning. “Remember it.” They burst outside and the night air hit her, freezing, sharp in her lungs. Sirens echoed somewhere out in the city; behind them, the ballroom glowed with firelight and chaos. Elena spun on him, pissed off and rattled. “What just happened in there?” “A message,” he said, voice way too calm. “Not to you, though.” Elena narrowed her eyes. “So why save me?” He stepped closer. The darkness settled around him like a cape, but the moon caught the sculpted lines of his cheeks—he looked human and not at the same time. “Because,” he said, his thumb tracing the frantic pulse at her wrist, “you interest me.” She sucked in a breath—it wasn’t just interest. It was a threat, but it still sent a shiver through her. “Stay away from me,” she whispered, her voice shaking a little. His smile was pure poison. “Eventually, you’ll want the opposite.” And then he was gone—melting into shadows and leaving her trembling, with nothing but his words echoing in her head. Elena stood frozen for a moment, realizing that her life had just flipped upside down. There was the safe-before, and now—whatever storm Adrian had just dragged in. And, God help her, some part of her wanted to run straight into it. TWEETS EXPLODING ON SCREEN @VenetianWhispers: Did you guys hear? The masquerade ended with gunshots!
