It would be totally unwise to throw himself into something especially when it could be dangerous. What if it would cost his life? He remembered the promise he had made to Hazel and their unborn baby which he intended to keep and he knew at this point, he had to thread carefully.
He needed to reach Caleb. He would know what to do in this type of situation but this town was so far from civilization that they don’t have cellular service so he couldn’t call and even if he were to send email, only God knows when Caleb would see it.
