Chapter 4

"Which hospital did you go to? The one back home?" I asked. I never thought such a small, unremarkable city would have a doctor this good. The second the question left my mouth, my wife's eyes darted away, panic flashing across her face. She clenched down on me by accident, and I barely held back a sharp gasp. "Stop asking about that, okay? Just keep going... honey," she said, her voice strained. A shiver shot straight through me, and all my curiosity vanished in an instant. I did not know how she got into this little habit of hers. Normally, she called me Sean nonstop all day, but the second we were in bed, she refused to call me that no matter what. She only ever wanted to call me honey. I had once asked her why, and she just tilted her head and smiled, telling me it was just our own little private bit of fun between us. And I could not deny I absolutely loved it. Every time that soft, sweet little call left her lips, I lost all control over myself. After we finished, she pushed herself up from the edge of the bed and went to pour me a glass of water. Getting a glass of water afterward was just something I always did, but normally, I got it myself. Today, out of the blue, she offered to do it for me. "Still got energy to move, huh? Guess I did not wear you out good enough today," I teased, dragging my hand over her silky smooth skin, and got a playful eye roll in return. "You are such a perv," she shot back. I chuckled and reached out to take the glass, my lips already hovering over the rim when I noticed she was sitting stiff on the edge of the bed. Her face was tight with tension, her gaze locked hard on the glass in my hand, and her fingers twisted nervously over one another. "What is going on?" I asked. She just shook her head softly, not saying a word. I did not press her for details, and lifted the cup back to my mouth. But she suddenly lunged forward and snatched it right out of my hand. Her voice came out breathless and rushed. "Do not drink that. It is too cold. I will get you a warm one instead," she said breathlessly. The whole thing left me scratching my head. Something felt off about my wife, but I did not overthink it, just nodded. After we got up the next morning, she dragged me straight to the mall to buy new clothes. She picked out several pieces, holding each one up to her body to check how it would look, then turned to me and asked, "Does this look good?" "It looks good. Your taste is always on point," I said with a grin, nodding. "Grab whatever you like. I will pay for it." Her eyes lit up right away. She leaned in and pressed a quick, soft kiss to my cheek, then gathered all the clothes and ducked into the fitting room. I hung around outside, replying to a few work messages while I waited. When I lifted my head again, she had already stepped out of the fitting room. But I froze instantly, caught completely off guard. The outfit she had on was not any of the ones she had picked up just minutes before. And her hair, which she had had down loose earlier, was now pulled back. Even weirder, the fitting room she just stepped out of was not the same one she had gone into. Had I just seen it wrong?
