Chapter 1
"Sean, come on! What are you doing in there? Help me move this table—it's so heavy!"
My wife's sweet, clingy voice drifted in from the living room, soft and affectionate just like always.
But I could not move a muscle, frozen solid right where I stood.
My fingertips dug into the yellowed medical file that I was clutching between my hands.
Honestly, I had never, ever imagined my wife's name would be tied to vaginal agenesis, the condition of having no vaginal opening.
We had so many wild nights together, going at it from nightfall straight through to sunrise multiple times, and she was always so unbelievably sexy and tempting between the sheets.
And yet the words were printed right there, black ink on white paper, clear as day.
How else could I explain it?
"Sean? What are you doing dawdling in there anyway?" she called out with playful annoyance.
When I did not answer her after what felt like an eternity, she let out a huff of playful annoyance and hurried toward the bedroom.
I scrambled to stuff the medical file back where I had found it, my mouth moving before my brain could catch up.
"Nothing. Be right out!" I said.
I pushed to my feet, and the second I stood up, our eyes locked right there in the doorway.
I darted my gaze away, coughed hard a couple of times, and forced my feet to move toward the door as if nothing was wrong.
I never noticed how she was staring at the space under the bed, a thoughtful, pensive look in her eyes.
Even when I climbed into the shower that night, the stupid file was all I could think about, looping through my head nonstop.
I knew that if I let this sit, it would only drive a wedge between us.
I had to ask her the truth.
For all I knew, the whole file was fake, right?
But before I could work up the courage to confront her, I found her already crying.
She was sitting on the bed, her shoulders shaking with quiet sobs.
Her eyes were puffy and red. She had been crying for a long time—that much was obvious.
When she heard my footsteps crossing the threshold, she snapped her head up fast, panic flashing in her gaze.
"Sean, you... did you... see that medical file?" she asked, her voice trembling.
