Chapter 6

I was still buzzing from the thrill of what we had just done, so I did not catch the sharp edge in her tone. I just grinned and answered, "Of course, it was great. We should try places like this more often." My wife's face darkened instantly, and she forcefully slapped my hand off her shoulder. She turned her face away, her lips pressed into a thin, tight line. Her expression was extremely unpleasant, her chest rising and falling slightly, but she refused to say a single word. That was when it finally hit me. This was not her usual playful pouting. This was clear, unmistakable anger. I froze in place, at a loss. "What's wrong? Are you upset?" I asked. She still ignored me, just staring hard out of the car window. I figured I had better keep my mouth shut. I thought to myself that maybe she had just come down from the excitement, and now that she was thinking clearly, she felt ashamed and embarrassed by how wild we had been earlier. That had to be why she had suddenly become so moody and angry. Otherwise, I really could not think of any reason her mood would swing so fast. I did not say another word, quietly started the car, and drove all the way back. Her reaction to the whole thing was much bigger than I had expected, because even after she returned from her hometown, she barely spoke to me. I figured I had to cheer her up, so after work, I stopped by a designer boutique and picked out a new purse she had mentioned once, hoping to surprise her. I had barely stepped out of the store when a familiar voice came from behind me. I turned around and saw a business owner I had worked with before. On his arm was a provocatively dressed woman, nothing like the woman I remembered marrying him. I raised an eyebrow and pretended not to notice. We made small talk for a couple of minutes, then his phone rang and he stepped aside. "You really care about your wife, so generous," the woman said, glancing at the purse in my hand and watching me with a half-smirk. "Isn't he just as good to you?" I asked with a polite smile. She let out a cold snort and took one slow step forward until she was standing right in front of me. Before I could even think about what she was doing, she suddenly grabbed my wrist and pressed my palm directly against the small of her back. "I have seen your wife wear that crop dress. Does she have a tiny mole right here?" she whispered. "I have one just like that, right here. Don't you want to... try something new?" I was completely terrified, frozen stiff on the spot. Luckily, I managed to yank my hand back a split second before her man returned. Otherwise, it would have been a disaster. I hurriedly said goodbye and rushed away, my face pale. When I got home, I took out the purse. My wife's eyes lit up instantly. "For me?" she asked, covering her mouth and smiling with delight. "Of course," I said, wrapping my arms around her and giving her shoulders a little shake. "So? Not angry anymore?" She pouted and shot me a playful glare. "I guess you did okay this time," she said. Her anger was finally gone. I let out a relieved breath, kissed her on the cheek, and dropped my voice to a suggestive murmur. "So then, tonight..." I whispered.
