Celeste POV – The first act of kindness
War. It’s all I’ve ever known. I was born during the first war, hidden in the darkness and always on the move. As soon as I was able to walk my parents begin teaching me how to survive and use my powers. I have similar features as my mum, long straight midnight black hair and amethyst eyes like all witches. I’m short at 5 feet 7 inches tall but slender. My parents often told me stories of before the wars, times of peace and friendship between species. Before the wars started everyone once lived and worked together in harmony. My grandmother was the high priestess of all the witches and if the war had not started my mother would have been the next high priestess. Mum said she was friends with a vampire named Ambrosia for almost five years before the war and he had saved her life. Every time she spoke about Ambrosia she smiled as she spoke, but her eyes told of sadness. When mum was just eighteen years old another species wanted revenge on witches, so they told humans about the existence of witches and wizards. They gave humans the information on how to identify wizards and witches by looking for the witch’s mark that were once located behind their right ear which indicated what coven they were from. So, the Wurzburg witch hunt began. Humans afraid of the unknown considered all witches as unholy creatures that must be destroyed. For years humans tracked down thousands of witches and wizard covens. If anyone had a mark or were suspected of witchcraft they were hanged, beheaded or burned alive without a second thought even infants without remorse. No questions or trials just caged like animals until they waited for death. Little did humans know that witches were only one of many supernatural’s that lived alongside them. My mother had to watch as her parents, two sisters and brother get burned alive while she waited in line for her fate to come but fate had other plans for her that day. Ambrosia saved her and altered the human’s memories of what happen that day. With no other option, the witches and wizards found a painful way of relocating the witches mark from those that had them and made sure no one was born with a witch’s mark again. Even after mum lost her entire family to humans, she tried to find a peaceful solution to stop the killings and save the witch covens. Most Vampires like Ambrosia could only alter one or two recent human’s memories but he had to be touching them. The vampire king has the power to alter years of memories without even having to touch humans. Ambrosia and my mum asked the Vampire King for help by removing all the human’s memories of witches and wizards, but the vampire King refused to help another species. Eventually the witch covens started fighting back against the humans. Powerful witches started burning human cities to the ground. The Vampires soon realized that they must save the humans in order to save their only food source. So, the war between the vampires and witches started. The first war lasted ten years because species like witches, vampires, werewolves, dragons, mermen, humans and fae competed for power and consider themselves to be superior to other species. Species against species, infighting between werewolf packs all for the sake of power and control. The World was in chaos as countless lives were lost, families and friends torn apart, made to choose between protecting their species or be classified as traitors of their species. Hunted down by their own species if they choose to stay out of the war or associate with another species. Some vampires and witches still wanted peace between the species and would still stay in contact or try to avoid conflict with each other throughout the first war. I hear a shriek in the distance. “Demons” I whisper to myself as a single tear rolls down my cheek and I’m reminded of that fateful day. We didn’t realize that during the first war for every life that was lost it would create monsters, beasts and demons to rise from the ashes and so a second war began. The second war was the most devastating that lasted for twenty years. The war for survival. Species like the humans, dragons, mermen and Fae numbers diminished within the first ten years of the second war. The witches, vampires, werewolves were losing numbers quickly as well, but no other species would help another species. They would rather face death than join forces. After twenty years of fighting everyone had given up all hope of survival. Our world was over runned by monsters, beasts and demons, anyone that was left alive was in hiding just trying to stay alive to see another day. It was in this war that I lost both my parents at the age of ten. My parents were all exhausted from fighting off demons all day. We had found a small empty cave to rest in for the night so our magic could rejuvenate but that night a group of demons found us. Both my parents told me to run as they worked together to hold back the demons. My parents gathered enough power to create a portal big enough to send me through, but it weakened my parents. “Find Ambrosia! Find Ambrosia! He will protect you”. My mother kept yelling as I stepped thru the portal. Just as the portal closed, I heard the cries and screams of my parents as the demons ripped my parent’s limbs from their bodies and started to feast on them. My parents had saved my life that day but at the cost of their own life. Mum’s portal had taken me to Ambrosia a vampire I only knew by the stories mum told me. I had only met a few other species when they crossed our path during the first war or were still in contact with my parents. I hear another shriek and growling. It’s closer to the cave this time. “Werewolves” I say to myself and crawl further into the cave. Ambrosia told me to not rely on my magic alone and showed me how to get stronger so I could hold my own against the demons and fight back. Ambrosia became like a second father to me and for six years he showed me how to track, evade and kill other species including vampires. I pick up my sword and place it on my lap. I start to focus on controlling my breathing and slow my heart rate down like Ambrosia taught me. Werewolves have extremely good hearing, sight and smell. I run my fingers down the now dull blade of my sword that still coated in demon blood. I hope the demon blood does not give my position away. The sword was once a shiny silver when Ambrosia first taught me how to fight with it. I’ve killed many demons with it since the second war started. Demons are creatures made from the decaying flesh of other species. Demons come in different sizes shapes, but they all have a distinct shriek when attacking. Demons hunt in groups, so the only way to kill demons is by either beheading them or to cause enough damage so that the other demons will start feasting on their own. I smile and think back to when I first met Ambrosia. In the first war I had only met a few vampires. Mum had told me about vampire ranks when I was young. The highest-ranking and most powerful vampire is the Vampire king followed by the vampire elders, vampire master’s and then vampires. When I first met Ambrosia, I thought he was a vampire master because he possessed a strong aura around him I was very surprised when Ambrosia told me that he’s just a vampire. He’s also only eighty years old which is considered young for vampires because vampires can live for five hundred years. Ambrosia told me about his life before the wars, I would often ask him questions about mum, but Ambrosia would always say “It’s a dangerous game we play to trust others, but always follower your instincts and only tell what needs to be told.” Ambrosia and I knew that we couldn’t stayed together forever, or we would be branded as traitors of our own species. So, when I was sixteen years old, we went our separate ways. I’ve been on my own now for three years. I sigh and I look out through the small hole that’s in between the rocks. I haven’t heard any noises for a while now and it’s almost sunset. I’ll have to leave the cave soon. I’ve stayed in the cave for almost a month now and it’s not safe to stay in one place for too long, as soon as it’s dark enough I need to look for another cave. I gather my belongings and take one last look around the small cave before crawling through the small gap into the night. I had not travelled very far when I ran into a group of werewolves fighting some demons. Shit! Just my luck. I can’t use my magic in case I need to use it later to escape. It could be weeks before I find another safe cave. The demons and werewolves have not seen me yet. I might be able to sneak pass. Its survival of the fittest, every species for themselves and it looks like his pack members are badly injured, they won’t last long. I start to sneak past them but suddenly stop when I hear a female crying out in pain. I turn towards the scream and notice a female covered in blood but still breathing, very pregnant. A demon has taken a large bite from her leg and she’s trying to crawl away while holding her stomach. I sigh and look at the demon again. f**k! I say under my breath as I pull out the sword and run towards the demon, in one swipe I cut off the demon’s head. She flinches as I grab her arm. “I won’t hurt you, I can get us out of here” I see the hesitation in her eyes, I can barely hear her over the growls and shrieks. She yells, “But, Remus and the others, I can’t leave them.” I yell over the chaos. “I am teleporting out of here, if anyone wants to live you need to be touching me” I use my barrier magic to send the dead demon towards the other demons. I hope that will help distract the other demons enough. I yell out, “Now.”
