Prologue
The second of August was one of the hottest nights known to the city of Atlanta in the summer months of that year. There was no wind and the air was stifling even at two forty in the morning. An absolute riot reigned on Main Street and St. Mary's Hospital looked more menacing than usual due to its formidable size. Every now and then a light would come on in one of the windows of the small buildings and voices cut through the silence, but they fell silent almost immediately. On the fifth floor, one window was half open, inside the room it was dark, only the moonlight prevented it from being complete. Three beds stood in opposite corners of the room. Someone moved in the right bed - it was a young girl. She opened her eyes and looked around, blinking rapidly, frightened. Her right hand rose slightly and returned and landed with a small thump on the bed. The girl's red hair was scattered on the white pillow and her brown eyes stared into the darkness, trying to take in where she was. In the far left bed someone got up and cursed. A tiny beeping sound was heard and a man in his thirties sat up in bed and stretched. After a few minutes, a young woman in a white nursing gown entered the room. "McQueen? What happened?", she whispered to the man who was still sitting in his bed. "I'm hungry." The man's voice whispered back. The nurse sighed and hurried past the girl's bed, not noticing her open eyes. "McQueen! It's almost three in the morning! I can't get you food." The man mumbled something that sounded like 'smelling hospital', and the nurse clicked her tongue. "Go back to sleep!", she pushed the man back to bed. "Come on! I have things to do." The nurse turned around and was about to help the room when the man's voice was heard again, "Eh...Adele?" Sister Adele turned to him and sighed deeply. "I think she woke up," McQueen pointed to the ginger girl's bed, "I heard her move." The nurse froze in place for a few seconds, Huaz rushed towards the girl's bed, who was still staring at the air with open eyes. "God save!", Adlech let out a small cry. "You're right McQueen!" The girl turned her gaze towards the nurse, trying to see her face in the darkness. "Can you hear me honey?", the nurse leaned towards her slightly. "You are in the hospital, my name is Adele and I am the nurse in charge of you. Everything is fine! I am going to call your doctor right away, okay?" The girl blinked several times, her throat was dry and she couldn't get a word out. The nurse let out an excited exclamation and rushed out of the room, shouting at McQueen: "Watch her! I'm going to call Dr. Rousseau." Dr. Russo was a man in his fifties, short, thin and balding. He rushed to the girl's bed and began routine tests such as pulse, pupil examination and blood pressure. A smile then spread across his face, "I think everything is fine now Adele, call her parents first thing in the morning and let them know she woke up." Adele who was standing in the corner of the room nodded vigorously and sent warning glances at McQueen who opened his mouth to ask something. "How are you, Annie?" The doctor smiled at the girl and for the first time that night spoke to her. She just lay there, staring at the ceiling, feeling scared. "Come on, I'll help you! Adele disconnect her from that monitor!", he barked and Adele hurried to do so. Dr. Russo raised the girl's bed so she could sit up. "Better?" he asked and the girl nodded. Nice to finally meet you, Annie. I'm Dr. Rousseau and I've been treating you for the past two months. Do you know why you are here?" he asked expectantly and the girl frowned, she didn't understand what he wanted or why he was talking to her. The girl shook her head in the negative, and Adele handed over a glass of water. "Two little sips, honey." "You were involved in a fatal car accident. But don't worry, everything will be fine now! Your parents will come tomorrow morning and we will perform several more tests to check that everything is fine with you, okay?", he smiled. The girl nodded slightly, then let out a small cough. Feels like her throat is back in action after a very long time. "Go back to sleep, everything will be fine," the doctor signaled to Adele who turned to leave the room. "Doctor?" The girl moved her lips and a small, melodious voice echoed around the room, causing Dr. Russo to stop and retrace his steps with a smile. "Yes, Annie?" "Who am I?"
