The grey skies mirrored the sadness that had settled in her heart ever since her mother's funeral two weeks earlier. Life had changed so quickly. One moment she had a loving home filled with laughter, and the next she was moving to a new town to live with her aunt and attend Sapphire High School—a place she had only heard about in whispers. Her aunt squeezed her hand gently. "You'll be okay, Iris. Your mother always said you were stronger than you realized." Iris forced a small smile. "I hope she was right." The towering gates of Sapphire High slowly opened. The school looked more like a palace than a place of learning, with its grand buildings, perfectly trimmed gardens, and students dressed in elegant navy-blue uniforms. Before Iris could ask another question, the classroom door swung open. Silence fell instantly. Declan walked in with three boys behind him, all wearing the same confident expressions. Without asking for permission, he took the seat at the back of the classroom and rested one arm over his chair. His eyes found Iris immediately. He didn't smile. He simply stared. The teacher entered moments later and began the lesson as though nothing unusual had happened. Throughout the class, Iris could feel Declan's gaze on her. Every time she looked back, he was already watching. It was unsettling. When the bell rang, students rushed out of the room. As Iris reached for her bag, someone slammed her locker shut before she could open it. She turned. Declan. "So," he said calmly, "how's your first day?" "I've had better." "I imagine you have." He leaned against the locker. "You embarrassed me." "I helped someone." "You challenged me in front of the entire school." "I wasn't trying to challenge you." "But you did." Their eyes locked. "I don't scare easily," Iris said. Declan chuckled softly, though there was no warmth in the sound. "That's going to be your biggest mistake." He walked away without another word. The students watching from nearby released the breaths they had been holding. Sophie hurried over. "What did he say?" "He thinks I'm afraid of him." "And?" "I'm not." Sophie sighed. "You will be." Lunch was worse. As Iris carried her tray toward an empty table, someone deliberately bumped into her shoulder. Her food crashed onto the floor. Laughter echoed through the cafeteria. Just then, Sophie appeared carrying another tray. "You can have mine." "I couldn't." "I insist." Before Iris could thank her, a folded piece of paper landed on the table. Neither girl saw who had thrown it. Iris unfolded it. Only seven words were written inside. Stay away from Declan if you value your life. Her smile disappeared. "Who wrote this?" Sophie asked. "I don't know." Sophie looked genuinely frightened. "Throw it away." "But what if someone really needs help?" "Trust me," Sophie replied. "At Sapphire High, some secrets are better left buried." Classes ended later that afternoon. As Iris walked toward the school gate, she noticed someone standing beside a sleek black car. Declan. He wasn't looking at her. Instead, he stared at the sunset with an unreadable expression. For just a moment, he didn't look like the cruel king everyone feared. He looked... lonely. Then he noticed Iris watching. His face instantly returned to its cold, emotionless mask. "What are you looking at?" he asked. "You." "And?" "I was wondering if there's any reason you're so determined to make everyone afraid of you." A dangerous silence followed. Finally, Declan answered. "Fear is easier than trust."
