In a world of shadows and blood, a chance encounter on a rain-slicked road binds a struggling delivery driver to a legendary mafia don known as the Ghost. CHAPTER ONE: THE PREDATOR TOLL
The rain in the Narrows didn’t fall; it punished. It turned the soot-covered streets into slick, black veins that mirrored the darkness of the city. Nick Miller wiped the fog from his visor, the engine of his beat-up delivery bike rattling between his thighs like a dying heart. He was shivering, his thin jacket soaked through, but he couldn't stop. One more delivery meant medicine for Maya. One more mile meant they stayed invisible for another night. But the universe had stopped looking out for Nick a long time ago. As he rounded the sharp bend of the Old Coastal Road, his headlights caught a jagged silhouette in the middle of the asphalt. A black SUV, its hood crumpled against a tree, smoke curling into the rainy sky like a funeral shroud. Nick’s instinct shouted at him to keep riding. In this city, a crashed car wasn't an accident; it was a crime scene. But then he saw the hand. A pale, blood-stained hand gripped the asphalt, the fingers twitching in the mud. "Damn it," Nick hissed, skidding to a halt. He ran toward the wreckage, the smell of gasoline and expensive leather hitting him instantly. He reached the man sprawled on the ground, and for a second, the world went silent. Even covered in blood and grime, the man was breathtaking. He was dressed in a suit that cost more than Nick’s entire life charcoal wool, now torn to reveal glimpses of tensed, tattooed muscle. His face was a masterpiece of sharp angles and cold beauty, framed by dark hair plastered to his forehead. "Hey! Can you hear me?" Nick knelt in the mud, his hands shaking as he reached for the man’s shoulder. The moment Nick’s skin touched the man’s expensive wool sleeve, a jolt of pure electricity slammed through him. It wasn't just a physical shock; it was a heavy, suffocating presence that made the air feel thick. The man’s eyes snapped open. They weren't brown or blue. They were silver cold, metallic, and predatory. In an instant, the "injured" man moved with the speed of a striking cobra. His bloodied hand shot up, his fingers wrapping around Nick’s throat with a grip like iron. "Who... sent you?" the man rasped, his voice a low, terrifying vibration that seemed to rumble in Nick’s very bones. "No one!" Nick gasped, his hands clawing at the man’s wrist. "I was... just passing by. I’m a delivery driver. Please... I’m trying to help." The man’s silver eyes narrowed, scanning Nick’s face with a terrifying intensity. He looked at Nick’s cheap, soaked jacket, his wide, panicked hazel eyes, and the way his pulse was drumming frantically against his palm. The man didn't let go, but the murderous intent in his gaze shifted into something else ,something dark, hungry, and deeply unsettling. "You have a heartbeat like a trapped bird," the man murmured, his thumb dragging slowly across the sensitive skin of Nick’s windpipe. It wasn't a choke anymore; it was a caress that promised violence. Before Nick could respond, the sound of approaching engines tore through the rain. Three pairs of headlights appeared in the distance, cutting through the gloom. "They're coming back," the man hissed. He struggled to sit up, his face contorting in pain as blood seeped from a wound in his side. He looked at Nick, and for the first time, Nick saw the "Ghost" behind the mask the legendary Raphael Moretti. "If you stay, they kill you," Raphael said, his voice dropping to a seductive, lethal whisper. "If you help me, I might kill you later. Choose, little bird." Nick looked at the headlights, then back at the man who was currently marking his neck with his thumb. Logic said to run. But looking into those silver eyes, Nick felt a pull he couldn't explain a gravity that suggested his life had ended the moment he stopped his bike. "Get on the bike," Nick said, his voice cracking. He helped Raphael up, the man’s heavy, muscular frame leaning against him. The heat radiating from Raphael’s body was staggering, a furnace of energy that made Nick’s damp skin tingle. As Raphael climbed onto the back of the small bike, he wrapped his arms around Nick’s waist. Nick gasped as Raphael’s large hands locked over his stomach, pulling him back against the man’s hard, broad chest. It was an intimate, suffocating hold. Nick could feel the heat of Raphael’s breath against the nape of his neck, and the rhythmic thud of a heart that beat with the steady coldness of a killer. "Drive," Raphael commanded. Nick gunned the engine, the bike screaming as they tore away from the crash site just as the black sedans arrived. They raced through the winding roads, the rain blurring everything into a grayscale smear. Every time Nick leaned into a turn, Raphael’s grip tightened, his fingers digging into Nick’s waist as if he were claiming the very bone beneath the skin. They reached a hidden access road near the docks, and Raphael directed him toward a seemingly abandoned warehouse. As the heavy steel doors rolled up, Nick realized this wasn't an abandoned building. It was a fortress. Armed men in tactical gear swarmed the bike before it even stopped. Nick was roughly yanked off the seat, his knees hitting the concrete. "Don! You’re bleeding!" one of the guards shouted, rushing to Raphael. Raphael stood up, his presence towering over everyone in the room. He ignored his men, his gaze fixed solely on the trembling boy on the floor. He walked over to Nick, his shadow swallowing him whole. Raphael reached down, his fingers hooking under Nick’s chin and tilting his head up. In the harsh fluorescent light, the marks of Raphael’s fingers were already turning a soft, bruised purple on Nick’s pale throat. "You saved me," Raphael whispered, his silver eyes dark with an unreadable emotion. "A dangerous mistake, Nick Miller. I saw your name on your badge." "Can I go now?" Nick asked, his voice trembling. Raphael smiled, but it didn't reach his eyes. He leaned down, his lips brushing against Nick’s ear, his scent of sandalwood and copper filling Nick’s senses until his head spun. "You saw my face. You felt my blood. And you tasted my fear," Raphael murmured, his hand sliding into Nick’s wet hair, gripping it just tight enough to make Nick’s breath hitch. "I don't let go of things that belong to me, Nick. And from the moment you touched me in the mud... you became mine." Raphael turned to his guards, his voice turning back into ice. "Take him to the East Wing. Lock the doors. If a single hair is harmed, I’ll have your heads. He is the only thing in this city that is off-limits." Nick tried to fight, but the guards were too strong. As he was dragged away, he looked back and saw Raphael watching him, a hand pressed to his bleeding side, a look of dark, obsessive triumph on his face and Nick Miller had no idea that the predator who had caught him had no intention of ever letting him fly away.
