Chapter Twelve: Arrival at the Pinewood MallHorror struck Sheriff Clayton Harris when he witnessed the events unfolding in the Pinewood Mall's parking lot. It was irregularly blanketed by snow: in some areas the snow was already three or four inches deep; around the lamppost bases there were mounds that reached a height of two feet or more.
Pacing about the parking lot without leaving traces in the snow moved about two hundred vampires. The majority of them seemed to be standing guard in front of the mall's main entrance, while smaller groups were doing exactly the same at the west and east doors. The orange glow cast by the parking lot's mercury lamps lent the scene a hellish luminescence.
