Along the way, Milo pointed out things that he thought Father McKenzie would find interesting: pieces of information such as the placement of junction boxes and electric power lines, as if he were a self-appointed tour guide. The cleric tried to assimilate as many of these details as he could, since the information might become important later on.
However, his main interest now was centered on the ventilation ducts above him, which ran all along the semi-subterranean passageway. McKenzie's eyes had already acclimatized to the gloominess down there and he noticed with amused interest that Milo chose to ignore a partially concealed hole in the wall, in spite of the fact that the spot looked quite worn—as if someone frequently stood there—and that there were dark smudges left by greasy hands
