He Who Holds My Heart
Chapter One: A Flash of Confusion
The soft hum of the office air conditioner and the gentle clatter of keyboards were drowned out by the steady beat of Amira’s heart. She sat across from Liam, his hand brushing hers ever so slightly as he leaned closer, his warm gaze locking with hers. The playful teasing, the soft smiles—they felt innocent yet dangerously intimate. Liam’s fingers traced the edge of her notebook, making her pulse quicken, and she couldn’t help but smile, caught in the gentle sway of their quiet romance.
Her thoughts, however, betrayed her. A sudden flash of memory struck her—earlier that day, she had seen Liam outside Ethan’s office at CodeWave. The sight lingered in her mind, forcing her curiosity to slip into conversation. “Ethan,” she asked subtly when he appeared beside her, “what was Liam doing at your company?”
Ethan glanced at her, eyebrows slightly raised, lips tugging into a faint smirk. “He said he had some business to discuss. Something about a partnership with CodeWave,” he replied casually, unaware of the storm brewing in her heart.
Amira nodded, but a sudden wave of unease washed over her. “I… I’m feeling a little unwell,” she whispered, standing. “I think I should head home.”
The drive home was silent, her mind restless. Liam’s gentle smile, the warmth in his touch, the subtle playfulness—they were all real, yet her heart thudded painfully for someone else. Ethan. How had she ended up here, dating Liam out of pressure, while her heart had always belonged to Ethan?
Her thoughts were interrupted by a soft knock at the door. Nneka, her family friend, entered, her eyes wide as she noticed Amira’s distant expression. “Amira, what’s wrong? You look… off.”
Amira sighed and let the words tumble out. She told Nneka everything—how Liam and Ethan had been friends since university, how Ethan had unknowingly captured her heart, and how circumstances had led her to date Liam instead. Nneka listened carefully, her gaze softening. “You deserve to follow your heart,” she said gently. “But take it one step at a time. Trust your feelings—they’ll guide you.”
A little lighter from Nneka’s encouragement, Amira quickly got ready. They dressed up and headed out for dinner, laughter and chatter filling the air as they tried to forget the tension lingering in her chest. The soft clinking of cutlery and the warm candlelight set a peaceful scene—until the restaurant door opened.
Ethan walked in.
Amira froze, her heart thundering.
