Chapter 1 - The Life I Thought Was Mine
Evelyn's POV “Do you know what today is?” I asked my husband Daniel softly. I wrapped my arms around Daniel from behind while he stood in front of the mirror adjusting his tie. He looked at me through the reflection and smiled softly. “Should I be worried if I forgot?” I laughed and pressed my cheek lightly on his shoulder. “You should be very worried darling.” Daniel turned and kissed my forehead. “Happy wedding anniversary to us, Evie.” Something warm spread quietly inside my chest. How time flies, three years ago, I stood in my white bridal wedding dress and promised forever to the man in front of me. People always talked about marriage like it was difficult. But mine never felt difficult. Maybe that was why I believed I was lucky. Daniel touched my nose lightly. “You’re smiling.” I smiled wider. “Yes babe. Because today is special.” Hearing this, his eyes softened. Suddenly his phone vibrated and his attention changed immediately. He picked it up quickly and turned the screen away. His expression changed for one second. Then he slipped the phone into his pocket and looked at me again. Nothing changed or unusual. Still, something little inside me noticed. But I ignored it. Because a good marriage needs trust and Daniel had never given me a reason not to trust him. Right? I stepped away from him and clapped excitedly. “Go shower. Breakfast will be ready.” He smiled and nodded. “Yes, ma’am.” I watched him go into the bathroom before walking out of the room and headed downstairs. The kitchen was peaceful with the morning sunlight entering quietly through the windows. I tied my apron and started cooking. Eggs. Toast. Coffee and fresh fruit. Daniel had always said breakfast made his day better. So I never skipped it. As I cooked, my eyes moved around the house. The flowers. The pictures. The small things we have acquired over three years. There was one picture from our honeymoon. Daniel had his arm around me. I remembered asking him if he thought we would still love each other when we were old. He laughed and said when that time comes he would still complain about my cooking. I remembered being happy when he said those words. I finished breakfast and placed everything carefully on the dining table. Daniel came downstairs dressed neatly just in time. He wore a white shirt and a black well tailored trouser with polished shoes. On his wrist was a black watch with a clean smile on his face. He looked so perfect with his shiny black hair. Too perfect. He sat down and took a bite. “This tastes good.” I grinned. “Of course, it always tastes good because I'm the one that prepared it.” He looked at me, amused. “Trust you, my confident queen.” I smiled and took my seat across from him. I didn't eat. Just watching him. Even after all these years, I still liked looking at him when he ate his food. Daniel noticed and raised his eyebrows. “What?” I shook my head and answered, shrugging my shoulders. “Nothing.” He looked at me for another second before concentrating back on his food. Then his phone vibrated again. He picked it up and typed something, his fingers moved quickly on the screen. After some seconds, he locked it and continued eating. I stared at him deeply. Not because I suspected anything. Only because he never used to do that. He noticed me looking at him and adjusted himself. “I'm sorry babe, work has been demanding lately.” I smiled immediately. “Okay babe. I understand, just don't overdo it.” He reached over and touched my hand. “Thanks hun. Don’t make too many plans for today okay.” I smiled. Too late because I already made plans for today. I was planning to prepare a one of a kind dinner with decorations, cake and a gift. A special one at that. I squeezed his hand in return. “Come home early tonight.” He smiled but it looked almost guilty. “I’ll try,” he replied, avoiding my eye contact now. I ignored that too. Daniel stood and picked up his jacket ready to leave for work. He walked towards the door and I followed him behind. Before leaving, he drew me closer and kissed my forehead. “See you tonight,” he said before walking out of the door. I stood at the door and watched him leave. Then I smiled. Today would be perfect. I cleaned the kitchen and started preparing for dinner. I ordered flowers, moved furniture and changed table decorations. I even took out our wedding album after I was done and stared at it. The pages of the album made me smile. I touched our wedding picture, remembering my dress and my nervous hands. Daniel teased me not to cry that day because makeup was expensive. I laughed quietly as I remembered his joke that day. Then the doorbell rang, jolting me from my deep thoughts. I sluggishly went to open it. Standing outside was my best friend and oldest friend, Clara. Clara walked in carrying shopping bags. She smiled immediately and said excitedly. “There she is. The happiest wife in the world.” I hugged her immediately and Clara hugged me back warmly. “You look excited honey.” “I am,” I beamed She laughed. “As expected.” She looked around and asked.“A big celebration?” I nodded. “Yes. Three years only happens once.” She smiled. But something about her smile felt strange today. “You good?” I asked her. Clara looked at me for a second before answering. “Of course I'm fine. Why did you ask.” “Nothing, just asking,” I replied, starting the decoration. Clara also joined me in decorating the while she teased me occasionally. Everything felt normal. Then she asked casually. “What will you buy for Daniel?” I smiled immediately. “I haven’t bought anything yet.” Clara stopped on her track, her whole attention on me now. “Are you being serious right now?” I nodded proudly. “Yes. But I’m planning to frame our marriage certificate.” Her hands stopped. Only for a second. But I saw it. She blinked. Then smiled. “That’s… thoughtful,” she said finally. I laughed, ignoring her strange reaction. “I know right, I wonder how he is going to react when he sees it.” Clara didn't say a word after that, she just looked away briefly then continued arranging flowers. At that moment, something strange settled in my chest but I jerked it off. Maybe she was just not in a good mood at that moment. Some hours later, the front door opened without any prior knocking and the person walked in. It was Daniel’s mother. Eleanor Cross.
