CHRIS CAME DOWNSTAIRS Monday morning and found Mickey and Ted already at the breakfast table.
“You guys about done?” he said. “I’m ready to go.”
“Aren’t you going to have breakfast?” Ted said.
“Not today, kiddo. I’m headed for the Mayo Clinic, and the first thing they’ll do is draw blood. Because of that, I’ve been fasting since bedtime. They’ll give me something to eat later today, I’m sure.”
“Can we come see you?” Ted said.
“Sure you can, if Uncle Mickey can find the time to drive you out there.”
“Christopher Bottoms!” Mickey said. “That was a terrible thing to say.”
“Sorry. When you come out, you should probably wait until after dinner.”
“Why?”
“Because I’m pretty sure they’ll be finished with their poking and prodding by then.”
