CHRIS WAS HAVING lunch in the hospital cafeteria Friday when the call from Dr. Banzhof came.
“How are you, Chris?” Dr. Banzhof said. “Can you talk?”
“I’m fine, and I’m at lunch, so talk away. I presume you have news?”
“Absolutely. I’ve thoroughly examined your scans and other test results, and my original opinion stands. You’re a prime candidate for ileoanal anastomosis the way I do it.”
“That’s good news. So, am I on your schedule in January?”
“Yes, you are. I’d like for you to check into the hospital very early in the morning on January third, and you’ll be the first procedure on my schedule that morning.”
“Thanks. Do you need to see me before then?” Chris said.
“If you were anyone else, I’d say yes, but given your profession, you know what to expect,
