SYNOPSIS: When two orphaned siblings - Evie and Caleb - meets Joanna, they are very happy to have someone who treats them as special. Someone who loves them very much - a mother. But little did they know that meeting Joanna would change their lives. Not only did they lose their new home, they lost their 'mother' and Caleb lost his life in the hands of Joanna's husband. Evangeline is devastated and swears to take revenge on both Joanna and her husband - David. Evie realizes that the more she tries to avenge Caleb, the more emptiness she feels. PROLOGUE: Emotionally starved, mentally bruised, physically abused, fifteen-year-old Evangeline strives to maintain a positive view of her life. Encouraging herself that things will get better, Evie continues to study and work hard in hopes she can relieve herself and her brother Caleb from poverty. However, her aunt Vera and her daughter Eva seem bent on making her life miserable. From little errands to huge tasks, they made sure Evie always had something to keep her busy and away from school. Evie still somehow excelled and the hate for her grew. With every passing minute was a mother-daughter scheme to kick her out of the house. Evie swore she'd never break but she had overestimated herself. It was on one April. Evie was washing the dishes while reading her book. Eva, who was two years older than her but was in the same class with her and was always jealous of her academic prowess, fetched a bucket of water and poured it on her, wetting her book and the floor. Evie wanted to speak up when Eva slapped her. She just endured it and placed her book by the window to dry. Eva was not satisfied and pulled Evie's hair hoping to ignite a fight but Evie just stared at her motionless. She wouldn't give in. Eva, angered by her indifference slammed her head against the dishes. Then the unexpected happened. Evie's head was bleeding. Her black hair was soaked in her blood and as her hazel eyes slammed shut, she fell to the floor, unconscious. When Evie opened her eyes, she was in a hospital. How long, she didn't know. She looked around and heard her aunt talking to her. She couldn't make out anything from what was being said but she knew that it was to cover up what happened. She ignored her and looked at the corner of the room where Caleb lay, his golden-brown hair shining in the faint light in the room. He must have fallen asleep worrying about her. Right there and then, she made a decision. She would leave. She would run away.
