Chapter 1
Veronica sat across from Maxwell Sterling in his extravagant office, trying to ignore the sinking feeling in her gut. She was a thief, but she had never worked for someone like Sterling before. He was a powerful and wealthy businessman with connections that could ruin her if things went wrong. Still, the payout for this job was too good to pass up. "So, Miss Price," Sterling began, his deep voice echoing through the room. "I understand that you have quite the reputation for acquiring things that aren't necessarily yours." Veronica smiled, trying to play it cool. "I prefer to think of myself as a collector of sorts." "Ah, yes. I've heard that you have a particular talent for acquiring rare and valuable paintings." Veronica raised an eyebrow. "Is that what you need me for?" Sterling leaned back in his chair, studying her for a moment. "I have a specific painting in mind, one that I've been trying to acquire for quite some time. Unfortunately, the owner is not willing to part with it." Veronica leaned forward, intrigued. "And you want me to steal it?" Sterling nodded. "I believe that you are the only one capable of getting it for me. Of course, I am willing to pay handsomely for your services." Veronica couldn't help but feel a little uneasy. "And if I get caught?" Sterling smiled. "I don't think you will. But if you do, I will make sure that you are well taken care of." Veronica considered his offer for a moment before finally nodding her agreement. "Alright, I'm in. What's the painting?" Sterling stood up, walking over to a nearby safe. He punched in the combination and pulled out a small photograph, handing it to Veronica. It was a stunning portrait of a woman, done in soft, ethereal colours. Veronica had never seen anything like it before. "That's beautiful," she said, handing the photograph back to Sterling. "Who's the artist?" Sterling's smile turned dark. "That's not important. What is important is that I have been trying to acquire that painting for years, and I need it now." Veronica nodded, understanding the urgency in his voice. "Okay. Where is it?" Sterling gave her the address of the private collector's home where the painting was located. "You'll have to be careful. The owner has a state-of-the-art security system in place." Veronica stood up, tucking the address into her pocket. "Don't worry. I've dealt with worse." Sterling smiled again, but this time there was a hint of something dangerous in his eyes. "I hope so, Miss Price. Because if you fail me, the consequences will be severe." Veronica swallowed hard, knowing that Sterling wasn't one to make idle threats. "I won't fail you." With that, she turned on her heel and left the office, the weight of Sterling's expectations heavy on her shoulders. As she walked out of the building, Veronica couldn't help but wonder what she had gotten herself into. The painting was important to Sterling, and if she failed, there would be consequences. But the payout was too good to pass up, and she had a reputation to maintain. She hopped into her car and pulled out the address, starting the engine and making her way to the collector's home. It was time to get to work. Just as she was about to turn onto the collector's street, her phone rang. It was Sterling. "Miss Price," he said, his voice cold and urgent. "I just received word that the painting is going to be moved in two days. You need to get in there and get it before then." Veronica felt a jolt of panic shoot through her at the news. Two days wasn't a lot of time to prepare, especially considering the owner's top-of-the-line security system. She took a deep breath and tried to steady her nerves. "Understood," she said. "I'll get on it right away." As she hung up the phone, Veronica realised that this job was going to be even more challenging than she had anticipated. She needed a plan, and fast. Veronica spent the rest of the day researching the collector's home and its security system, trying to find a way in. She studied the blueprints of the house, scoured the internet for any information about the owner's routines, and even went so far as to drive by the property to get a sense of the layout. As the hours ticked by, Veronica became increasingly frustrated. The security system was top-notch, and she couldn't find any weaknesses in it. She knew that she needed to get creative if she was going to pull this off. Finally, in the early hours of the morning, Veronica had an idea. She spent the next day gathering supplies, preparing for the heist. As the sun began to set on the second day, she parked her car a few blocks away from the collector's home and began to make her way towards it. The house was quiet and dark, and Veronica couldn't see any signs of life inside. She made her way to the back of the property, where she found a small door that led into the basement. It was the perfect entry point. With a deep breath, Veronica picked up the lock and slipped inside. She made her way up to the main floor, avoiding the security cameras and sensors as she went. Finally, she found herself in front of the painting. It was just as beautiful as in the photograph, and Veronica felt a pang of guilt as she looked at it. But she couldn't let her emotions get in the way of her mission. She carefully removed the painting from its frame and rolled it up, tucking it under her arm. Just as she was about to make her escape, she heard a noise from the hallway. She froze, listening intently. Footsteps. Multiple sets of footsteps. Veronica's heart raced as she realized that she had been caught. She quickly looked for a place to hide, but it was too late. The door to the room burst open, and a group of men stormed in, guns drawn. "Freeze!" one of them shouted. Veronica knew that she was in trouble. She raised her hands in surrender, the painting still under her arm. The man who had shouted stepped forward, his face twisted in anger. "You're under arrest for theft," he said. Veronica couldn't help but smile, even in the face of danger. She had known that this job was risky, but she had taken it anyway. And now, she was paying the price. As the men led her out of the house in handcuffs, Veronica couldn't help but wonder what Maxwell Sterling was going to do now that she had failed him. She had a sinking feeling that her troubles were far from over. Veronica sat in the back of the police car, her heart racing. She knew that she was in serious trouble. She had been caught red-handed, and there was no denying her guilt. As the car pulled away from the collector's home, Veronica's thoughts turned to Maxwell Sterling. She knew that he wouldn't be pleased with the news of her arrest. He had paid her a lot of money to steal that painting, and now he had nothing to show for it. Veronica wondered if Sterling would try to cut a deal with the police to get her out of jail. Or maybe he would try to take matters into his own hands. She shuddered at the thought of what he might do. Sterling was a powerful and dangerous man, and she knew that she had made a huge mistake by getting involved with him. As the police car pulled into the station, Veronica took a deep breath and braced herself for what was to come. She had a feeling that things were about to get a lot worse before they got better. The officer opened the door and motioned for Veronica to step out of the car. She did so, her eyes scanning the area for any sign of Sterling or his men. But as she was led inside the station, Veronica couldn't shake the feeling that she was being watched. She felt like there was someone out there, someone who was watching her every move. As she was led to her cell, Veronica couldn't help but wonder who it could be. Was it Sterling, waiting to exact his revenge? Or was it someone else entirely? Veronica knew that she was in for a long night, and she couldn't help but feel a sense of dread wash over her. She was alone, scared, and completely at the mercy of whoever was out there watching her. With a sinking feeling in her gut, Veronica realized that she might never make it out of this alive. As Veronica sat alone in her cell, her mind raced with all the possible scenarios that could unfold. She tried to stay calm and focused, but the fear was consuming her. She couldn't shake the feeling that someone was out there, watching her every move, waiting for the right moment to strike. Suddenly, there was a commotion outside her cell. Veronica looked up to see a group of men approaching, led by a tall, imposing figure in a dark suit. "Ms Veronica," the man said, his voice low and menacing. "I'm here to take you with me." Veronica's heart raced as she realized that this was it. The moment of reckoning. She had no idea who these men were or what they wanted with her, but she knew that she had to fight for her life. But before she could even move, the men had broken into her cell and grabbed her roughly, dragging her out into the hallway. Veronica tried to resist, but she was outnumbered and outmatched. The men were strong and ruthless, and she knew that she stood no chance against them. As they dragged her through the dimly lit corridors of the prison, Veronica couldn't help but wonder who had sent those men after her. Was it Maxwell Sterling, seeking revenge for her failed mission? Or was it someone else entirely? But as they burst through a door at the end of the hallway, Veronica's thoughts were cut short by what she saw. They were in a dark alleyway, surrounded by a group of menacing-looking men. And at the centre of it, all stood a familiar figure. A figure that Veronica had hoped never to see again. It was her ex-husband, Tommy. And he looked more dangerous than ever. "Well, well, well," he said, his voice dripping with venom. "Look who we have here. My little runaway wife. I always knew I'd find you eventually." Veronica felt a surge of anger and fear rise within her. She had left Tommy years ago, after enduring years of abuse and manipulation. She had thought that she had left him behind for good. But now, he was back, and he had brought his cronies with him. "What do you want?" she asked, trying to keep her voice steady. "What do I want?" Tommy laughed. "I want what's mine. And you, my dear, are mine." Veronica felt a chill run down her spine. She knew what Tommy was capable of, and she knew that he wouldn't hesitate to hurt her if she didn't comply. But before she could even think about her next move, one of Tommy's men stepped forward, holding a gun. "Time to go," he said, motioning for Veronica to move. Veronica knew that she had no choice but to follow. As she was dragged away, she couldn't help but wonder how she had ended up in this situation. She had thought that she was a master thief, a woman who could handle anything that life threw her way. But now, she was nothing more than a pawn in someone else's game. And as she was led into a waiting car, Veronica knew that things were about to get a lot worse before they got better. Veronica sat in the back of the car, her heart racing with fear and anger. She couldn't believe that she had been caught so easily, and she couldn't believe that she had been betrayed by someone she had trusted. As the car sped away into the night, Veronica's mind raced with all the possible scenarios that could unfold. She knew that she had to get out of this situation, but she didn't know how. Suddenly, the car screeched to a halt, and Veronica was thrown forward. She looked up to see that they were in a deserted alleyway, with no one around for miles. "What's going on?" she asked, her voice shaking. But before anyone could answer, the doors of the car were ripped open, and two masked men jumped in. They grabbed Veronica roughly, and before she knew it, she was being dragged out of the car and into the darkness. Veronica struggled to break free, but the men were too strong. She knew that she was in trouble, and she knew that she had to think fast if she wanted to survive. But just as she was about to give up hope, one of the men spoke. "Ms Veronica, we're here to help you," he said. Veronica looked up in surprise. Help? Was it possible that she had finally found an ally in this dark, dangerous world? But as the men led her through the alleyway, Veronica couldn't shake the feeling that there was something off about this whole situation. She didn't know who these men were or what they wanted from her, but she knew that she couldn't let her guard down. And as they pushed her through a door into a dimly lit room, Veronica's worst fears were realized. Standing in front of her, with a sinister grin on his face, was none other than Maxwell Sterling himself. "Hello, Veronica," Maxwell said, his voice smooth and controlled. "I've been waiting for you." Veronica tried to back away, but one of the men held her in place. "What's going on?" she demanded, trying to sound brave despite her fear. Maxwell smirked. "You didn't think I would hire a thief to steal a painting for me, did you? I wanted to see what you were capable of." Veronica felt a sick feeling in her stomach. She had been played, used for someone else's twisted amusement. "I don't understand," she said, her voice shaking. Maxwell walked closer to her, his eyes gleaming with malice. "I have a proposition for you, Veronica. You can either work for me, or you can suffer the consequences. It's your choice." Veronica's mind raced with possibilities. She knew that she had no other option but to agree to Maxwell's proposal, but she couldn't shake the feeling that this was only the beginning of a dangerous game. "I'll work for you," she said, her voice barely above a whisper. Maxwell smiled, his eyes sparkling with satisfaction. "Good. You'll start tomorrow." The two masked men dragged Veronica out of the room and into the cold night air. She was shivering, both from the cold and from the shock of what had just happened. As she stumbled away from the building, Veronica realized that she had just made a deal with the devil. She didn't know what kind of work Maxwell had in store for her, but she knew that it was going to be dangerous, and possibly deadly. And as she looked up at the dark sky, Veronica knew that her life was never going to be the same again. Veronica walked down the empty street, her thoughts racing with fear and uncertainty. She knew that working for Maxwell Sterling was going to be a nightmare, but she didn't know how to get out of this situation. As she turned a corner, she suddenly heard footsteps behind her. She turned around, only to see two of Maxwell's men walking towards her. "Ms Veronica, Mr Sterling would like to see you again," they said in unison. Veronica's heart sank as she realised that she was trapped, and that there was no escape from Maxwell's twisted game.
