CHAPTER FOUR
RESCUED
The date with Julia was amazing, the gig went great and our band officially has 200,000 subscribers. This week couldn't have gone better. Even though we're not signed to any label company yet, it's still okay because we formed this band 7 months ago and before that, I was just some guy on the internet doing covers of songs. Even though I gained 100k subscribers on YouTube through 5 years of videos, I couldn't help but feel alone so a band was and still is the best thing for me.
Thankfully, a music scout loved our new song, and we're going to perform for a record company next month. Our big break, it's something I wouldn't miss for the world. And as for Julia, we've been texting non stop ever since that hilarious date and I see her everyday at 3:00 at the bookstore, except today, said she had classes.
It was Friday that night, I'd just finished a two hour long gig and we all headed home laughing about the drunk guy who was crawling. It was only 8:30 p.m and the guy was drunk like hell. That is until I was halfway there and I got a reply to my text which was asking her what she was doing.
"I'm building a blanket fort. Wanna come join?" This girl was delirious and I love it. I mean, who doesn't love forts?
"A blanket fort?" I reply.
"Don't judge! I'm babysitting my little cousins and they wanted to build a fort....on the roof. How could I resist?" I smiled at her text and replied.
"Who couldn't? I love forts."
"Great so that means you'll help me with these little devils?" I didn't actually mean that I would go to a stranger's place and meet their children. Call me immature, but a it's blanket fort! And I couldn't really say no.
"Okay but only for a while, text me the address." I texted as I got a reply within the next few seconds.
"Hey guys, I have go somewhere tonight. I'll be back at like 10." I say to my band mates. We always went back to our place and hang out or jam but I haven't been in a blanket fort since I was 12. Sue me if I wanted to enlive as a kid again.
Besides, any reason to see Julia was was a good enough reason for me.
"Okay, I'm sorry but the way your're smiling all the time and disappearing for hours. I can't help but think you're doing drugs." Lee said with a serious face. I could get what he was saying, I rarely smile and now I'm smiling like a retard every time my phone lights up. My bandmates all stood behind him, showing they all thought the same.
"Yeah, I mean I know they say s*x, drugs and rock and roll, but we aren't like that."Carson said as I was laughing on the inside.
"Chill guys, I'm meeting a girl." I said, smirking at them.
"You had me scared there."Lee being as dramatic as he is cited.
"This is why you should tell us stuff" Carson said smiling. It was true, I was probably the most emo out of the band. I nodded apologetically.
"We'll see you later. If not, don't be late for practice again." Ben scolded.
"Okay, thanks. See ya" I ran up and hailed a cab.
"Enjoy!" I hear them shout out behind me. I smiled thinking to myself in the cab, I couldn't believe I'm doing this, going to a stranger's house and crashing little kids blanket fort. I guarantee my six foot tall body will bring it down in a matter of seconds but it was still fun to think about. I finally got to the address 20 minutes later and texted her,
"I'm here. Which floor do I go to?" I stood in the apartment building's lobby. It was pretty high class for this neighborhood. Not anything like The Upper East Side but it was a nice looking place.
In a few seconds, I got a reply. "The roof."
I got up the elevator and pressed the last button. The building had only 30 floors and no one seemed to be using the elevator so it was a quick ride. I got to the roof and saw a smiling figure standing in front of me, it was a blonde little girl.
"Hi! Are you Julie's friend?" She said, grinning in her pajamas.
"Yeah I am." I smiled at the little girl. She then grabbed my hand and pulled me toward the fort. It was huge, I guess these kids think big.
"Hey" I heard Julia's voice, coming out of the fort. And it was pink, hot pink. How'd they get so many pink blankets?
"Hey." I waved at her. Wow, this was awesome place to sleep in.
"We made it extra bigger knowing you'd be coming" Julia grinned at me.
"Thank you for not making me feel like a giant." I smiled jokingly at her.
I observed the long line of rope tied from the balcony railings to the ends of the squished blanket ends. It looked funny from the ends but it was a strong build.
"I may not be an engineer but what'd you think?" She said while we both looked at the 10 ft wide structure.
"It's awesome." I say looking at her.
"Come on in!" She said pulling me by the hand. I got in the space lit up by Christmas lights inside and it was warm with pillows all over it.
I got inside and it look like they're planning on a sleepover and a movie.
"They wanted to know what camping would feel like so this is the best I could come up with." she said smiling at me.
"It's a great idea." I replied back.
"Thank you, but I had no choice with these monsters bugging me." she said rolling her eyes at the two little girls under the covers a couple of feet away.
"I don't know. They seem nice." I say, honestly.
"Don't be fooled by that innocent look." she said seriously, warning me with her hands. I nodded as I laughed.
"Do you know what they did?" she grinned.
"What?" I asked.
"They stole the candy that their mother hid for their birthdays and now I'm high on ..sugar." She grinned.
We both laughed and then the little , louder one said "Are we watching the movie or not?".
The laptop was set up and they even got popcorn. I sat on top of the covers they were sleeping in, took the slice of pizza Julia gave me and said "What are we watching?"
The other brunette said "We're watching 'Up'. I'm Lucy by the way." she smiled.
"And I'm Alexa." the other one shouted. They were cute innocent 7 yr olds and I replied "I'm Dean."
"Like Dean Winchester?" the older one squealed.
"Do you hunt demons?" Alexa gasped.
"You let them watch Supernatural?" I say, mouthing the words to Julia making her laugh.
"What? I'm not their mother." she grinned. Wow she really was high on sugar.
"Yeah girls, I'm exactly like him." I say, laughing inside.
"Cool.." Lucy dreamily gaped at me. "Alright girls, press the start button." Julia called out.
A few minutes passed as the girls were watching Up and the part in the beginning and I see no subtitles. No wonder Julia isn't paying any attention. She kept doing something under the covers and I got suspicious, so I took a look.
I saw her there, eating the bucket full of candy. I touched her shoulder as she jumped with surprise. She then relaxed and said
"Want some?" she grinned.
"No thanks...ooh gummy bears." I say as I grab the my favorite red ones. "My favorite are the green ones." she said grabbing some.
And as we looked up, the two girls were asleep. They looked so harmless, I don't see how Julie could call them monsters.
"They may not have horns but the little devils locked me inside a closet earlier." She grabbed the laptop and turned off the movie.
I chcukled as I said to her, "Who are you babysitting for?"
"My aunt who's going to Washington with her husband. She'll be back tomorrow. though." She said as we got out from the fort trying not to wake the kids.
We walked over to the edge and took in the beauty of the city at night. It was beautiful, the skyline with the tall buildings and the lights. It's a dream, living in New York, at least for me.
"I hope you don'y mind me asking, but after your parents died, where did you go?" she asked, seriously.
That question really hit me. "I don't have any relatives. My mother was an only child and my grandparents died when I was small." I took a deep breath, "My dad was adopted and he didn't know his family. So after my parents died," I continued, "We lived with our mother's best friend ever since."
"Oh..how was it?" she asked looking at me for my reply.
"It was okay, she's a really nice person. I became best friends with her children and everything. A lot better than a foster home." I say, trying not to sound so broken.
"What do mean when you say music saved you?" she asked, looking up at me with curiosity.
"Well, when I turned 18 I was not going to live with them anymore, they were going to pay for my college but I insisted they didn't because truth is, I've dreamt of being a singer ever since I started writing songs." I continued,
"I can express the feelings which can't be explain, you know. It saved me from bottling it all up, like my brother.." I pause remembering him being such a pain to my mom's best friend, something she didn't deserve.
"Wow, you don't know how much I want to hear music. People make it sound so nice." she said staring out into the city lights.
"But you remember it when you were small, right?" I asked concerned for her.
I could hear her trying to hold back her tears as she said "I remember my dad humming songs every morning but frankly, no I don't want to remember."
I pull her closely to my side as I wipe away a tear, rolling down her cheek. I couldn't say anything and I chose not to. I can understand the feeling like someone walked out on you, walked out on your life. I understand it, very well.
"Can I ask, what keeps you going?" I ask, knowing it's not a normal question but I think we're kind of on the same grounds.
"God, you know just praying really helps me. He's always there for me." She said as she looked down at her cross necklace touching it.
That was it, that was what kept her going for her, God while for me, it was music. Now I know. I'm not religious but I don't know anything else about Jesus except for the fact he died on a cross. I couldn't even trust people easily, how could I trust someone I can't see? But, I can respect her choice and I'm willing to listen.
She was staring at me. I think she was looking at my reaction or reply but there was none I can supply.
"How about we go back to the fort?" She asked, lighting up the mood a bit.
"Sounds awesome." I say as we head back to the fort and I take off my Nike shoes.
As we laid together over the covers, side by side face turned towards each other. We both laughed hysterically and I didn't know why. We're crazy, we just really are.
Julia then took and ate more and more candy. I did the same as we talked about everything, friends, fun, jokes, life and death. It was amazing. A couple of hours later we're both on a sugar rush and we're both too hyper to fall asleep. Suddenly, the fort got hotter, I didn't know if it really did or it was because of us going insane with sugar.
We then got an idea to remove the top blanket over us but just that so the girls won't notice or wake up. And after we did, we got back in our places as we watched the sky. The stars, the full moon, everything was just too good to be true. We were speechless.
Julia then look to me and said "The sky is so beautiful."
"Not as beautiful as you." I smiled as our heads were literally inches away. I then closed the distance as our lips met into a slow soft kiss. We were kissing under the moving skies, nothing better for a first date. I then pulled back as she smiled and bit her lower lip. The kiss was amazing, she's amazing.
We then just laid back into the comfy but solid hard ground, head faced each other, hands together and talked all night. The best part about it, is that I can stare at her as much as I want without seeming like a creep. I mean her eyes were so bright and pretty with the Christmas lights reflecting in her iris. I love every minute of it as we talked and laughed together.
I never believed in magic, but know I really knew what a magical night was.
What If time could time stand still?
I wish that we could lay right here
And never think about our fears
Forever, forever, forever...
Forget about tomorrow's light
I only want to hold tonight
Forever, forever, forever....
I feel like if've just been rescued.
