Chapter 5At first the deluge of water felt fantastic: cool enough to wash away the heat but still almost pleasant even as it soaked through Jake’s borrowed T-shirt and shorts. But by the time he got to the subway, his sneakers were drenched and rubbing blisters on his bare feet, and the air-conditioning was blasting so Jake was freezing before he even went through the turnstile next to the ticket booth. The bored attendant smirked at him as Jake dropped his token into the fare box, and the other late-morning commuters carefully edged away from him and the water he was dripping as they shook their umbrellas out over the tracks. Jake squelched his way along the platform and grinned to himself, using his fingers to scrape water out of his hair. A couple of people smiled back at him, silently
