Chapter1
The air was thick with tension and despair as Daisy lay, curled up on the sofa in her parent's living room. Her Mum sat beside her, with a forlorn look, gently chastising her. Beside her was a tray of freshly baked apple pie, left untouched. “You can learn to love him dear. It isn't as hard as it seems.” But Daisy was lost in thoughts. Her plans of getting married to her true mate are completely shattered. She looked worn out and sleep-deprived. Her father, Mr. Steve, stood at the window, his hands in his pockets, soliloquizing, and seemed to be staring at nothing in particular. He heaved a sigh for the umpteenth time, and with his voice heavy with resignation, he said. “This is the only measure we have, rejecting this deal would lead to total ruin. Worse, I might be locked up, facing a jail term, and we know what that means,” he said. As wolves, they aren't meant to be in any kind of confinement for an extended period, as they would need to go for a run at most 3-4 times weekly to maintain their well-being. It is even more difficult as they live among humans who are not even aware of their existence. Her mum sighed, glancing at her, and brought forward the tray of baked apple pie, which was already getting cold. “At least, eat something, dear. You can't starve yourself over this." she pleaded, but Daisy remained unresponsive, lost in her world of sadness and hopelessness. Her face, wet with tears, having sobbed for almost an hour, seemed almost oblivious to their presence. Concerned, her mum stood, and walked over to her husband, “This can't continue. She hasn't eaten anything for two days now. Two days.” She emphasized. “I can't lose my daughter over this.” He walked away from the window and sank on a nearby sofa. He looked at her. “There's nothing I can do. Investors are on my neck, and we are on the verge of financial bankruptcy. We would be lucky if we're even able to keep the house,” he said. “Hell, he approached me for goodness’ sake. We have no choice.” “What do you mean we have no choice? You could…we could…” She stuttered, lost for words. Frustrated, she ran her hands over her face and joined him on the sofa. Daisy stood up from the sofa, forcing her parents to pay attention to her. “No. I won't do it.” She said, “I can't do it. I'm sorry.” Her Dad stood, approaching her. “This is way beyond us, Daisy. I'd advise you to let go of any resentment you might have and just focus on the wedding.” “No. No…No, Dad, this is cruel. Don't do this to me, please.” she begged, but he simply turned his back, sinking on the sofa. She cast a look at her mum in hopes she'd do or say something…anything, to come to her rescue. “Mum…” she implored. Her Mum rubbed her eyes, more necessarily to hide the look of pain and hurt emanating from them. “Daisy. Why can't you understand that we simply have no other choice?” She said, “We are finally offered a shred of survival and there is no way we can turn that down. You just have to learn to accept it.” “But I don't love him.” She cried “He is NOT my mate. How….how do you expect me to live with a total stranger? I didn't wait this long to be mated to a sadistic, ruthless, excuse of an Alpha.” She spat. “ENOUGH, DAISY.” Her Dad bellowed. “I don't want to hear another word of this from you. Why can't you…..” he coughed, placing one hand on his chest. …. Why can't you just do as you're told, for once?” Her mum stood and brought him a glass of water, which he consumed in a gulp. She looked at her mother, again. But she simply shook her head. “My hands are tied, Daisy.” She said, retrieving the glass cup from her husband and placing it on the table. Daisy just stood there, staring at her parents in disbelief. She couldn't believe she would be getting married tomorrow. TOMORROW! Sniffing, she wiped her tears, took one look at her parents, and dashed out of the house, leaving them confused. Her mum shouted. “DAISY! Come back here.” She made to go after her. She stepped out but could not find her anywhere. “Where had she gone?” “She's just being a kid.” Her husband said. “She will come around.” She whipped around to stare at him. “This is too much for her. I understand the situation we're in at the moment, but…this is just so sudden for her,” she said. “She should've had at least a little time to assimilate all these things.” “But, I didn't make this happen. Why are you both making it sound like it's my fault or something?” “I'm just saying that this is too much for her to handle,” She said, in a whisper. “She's still out little girl.” Just then, they heard a loud shout, like a commotion. They stepped out fully to see what the problem was and were surprised to find people gathered outside the gate. They all seemed to be staring at something in particular. One woman was even crying. Daisy's parents rushed forward and discovered that their gazes were fixed upwards. And there, at the rooftop of their building, stood Daisy. Daisy stood there, on the rooftop as the wind whipped through her hair, carrying with it a faint scent of the city. She looked down at the streets, decidedly, to end it all. “Someone, please take her away from there. She will get herself hurt,” another woman exclaimed, clutching her crying baby. But no one dared to move. They seemed more interested in knowing if she would eventually take her life or not. In no time, Daisy's parents were on the rooftop. Her Dad was panting heavily as he tried to catch his breath after running up a ridiculous flight of stairs. Her mum, on seeing her, broke down in tears. “What do you think you're doing, Daisy?” Her Dad said, fury lacing his tone. His face looked flushed, obviously from the staircase and the ridiculousness of the situation he was being presented with. “I'd rather di**than marry him.” She sobbed,” her legs moving further on the ledge. All this time, her mum was simply watching her movements and her heart skipped when Daisy moved. “I'd rather di**…” she repeated, “than have no chance left at happiness. I'd rather DI**.” She screamed. Her face was wet with tears. She tried to hold it back, but they just continued to flow. And at that moment, her foot shifted against the ledge. Her mum screamed.
