Maddie’s house didn’t feel like the cabin. That was the first thing I noticed when I woke up. It wasn’t just the noise—soft movement somewhere in the house, something shifting, something alive in a way the cabin never was. It was the feeling underneath it. The way the quiet didn’t press in. The way I didn’t feel like I had to listen for something that wasn’t there. I still didn’t sleep well. But it was different. Less sharp. Less… waiting.
