Chapter 14 The others looked sharply at him. Smitty said “Bridge? What bridge?” Spiker shook his head, as if he couldn’t believe their stupidity. “Over there.” He pointed to the side. “There’s your bridge.” At first glance, the bridge - even less than fifty yards away - was awkward to spot. Covered in foliage, it merged into the general green of the background. Held in place by a latticework of steel hawsers, originally it was a delicate but highly robust structure, part glass, part metal, designed to give the impression of weightlessness, so moving along it was like walking through air. Now it seemed to be impossibly constructed from entwined ivy, vines and the tops of trees: more an integral part of the jungle than a separate and elegant man-made structure.
