Chapter Twenty-Two JOHN I stand and grab Mila’s hand and walk her over to Shadow. “There’s no way I can get on,” she tells me looking up at me then glancing at the dress she’s wearing. I lead Shadow to the bench close to the fire, place my leg over until I’m sitting tall. She stands on the wood, and I hold my hand out for her, pulling her up, allowing her leg to swing over until she’s sitting behind me. Her hands snake around my waist tightly, and I place one of my hands on hers as I hold the reins with the other. “We’re gonna go slow,” I tell her and hear her gulp behind me, which makes me chuckle.
