Chapter One: A new arrival
The morning sun filtered through the tall windows of St. Vincent High, casting golden patterns across the polished floors. The chatter of students echoed through the hallways as Lila adjusted her backpack, weaving through the crowd. Her textbooks were stacked neatly, but the history assignment she hadn’t finished nagged at her. Today was going to be another ordinary day — or so she thought. She turned a corner and nearly collided with a tall figure leaning against the lockers. His presence was magnetic, impossible to ignore. Dark, slightly wavy hair framed a perfectly symmetrical face, and his eyes — deep brown, almost too sharp for comfort — scanned the hallway with a calm, confident intensity. “Whoa,” whispered a girl behind Lila, nudging her lightly. “That’s the new student, Adrián Cole. He’s from some rich family abroad. Everyone says he’s… elegant.” Lila blinked, trying to focus. Elegant? That seemed like a word better suited to magazine covers than hallways. Yet, there was no denying the aura that surrounded him. It wasn’t arrogance; it was a quiet composure, like he owned the world but didn’t feel the need to flaunt it. The first bell rang. Students scattered toward classrooms, some sneaking in last-minute greetings to friends, others rushing to avoid tardiness. Adrián pushed off the lockers and walked toward the classroom, his stride confident yet relaxed. Lila noticed how effortlessly people seemed to make way for him — a subtle, unspoken respect that hinted at privilege but also genuine presence. As fate would have it, history class put them side by side. Lila slid into her seat just as Adrián entered the room. The teacher, Mr. Hawkins clapped his hands to get attention. “Class, we have a new student joining us today. This is Adrián Cole. Please make him feel welcome.” Adrián gave a brief nod, a small, polite smile touching his lips. His voice, calm and measured, carried easily across the room. “Thank you. I look forward to learning with all of you.” Lila’s notebook slipped slightly off her desk as she reached for a pen. Quick as a flash, Adrián caught it before it hit the floor. “Careful,” he said, handing it back. His voice was smooth, almost melodic, but not pretentious. “Thanks,” Lila murmured, cheeks heating. She quickly looked down at her notebook, pretending she hadn’t been caught staring. The class began, and Adrián sat down, just a desk away. Lila couldn’t help but notice small details — the way he straightened his blazer without looking, the way he glanced around the room with calm observation, the faint crease of concentration on his brow as he listened to Mr. Hawkins. There was something… intriguing about him, something that made her pulse quicken in ways she didn’t understand. After a while, the teacher paired them for a group activity. Lila’s heart skipped a beat when she realized she’d be working with Adrián. “Looks like we’re partners,” he said casually, holding out his hand. Lila hesitated for a fraction of a second before shaking it. His grip was firm but not overbearing, and his eyes held a spark of genuine curiosity. “Lila,” she said softly. “Adrián,” he replied, the corners of his mouth twitching into a hint of a smile. As they began discussing the assignment, Lila felt something shift. His questions weren’t just about the project; they were thoughtful, probing, and respectful. He wasn’t the stereotypical “rich kid” she’d expected. He was… different. The bell rang again, marking the end of the period, but neither of them moved immediately. They were still engrossed in conversation, oblivious to the students streaming past. Finally, Lila closed her notebook with a soft snap. “I guess we should go to the next class.” “Yeah,” Adrián said, standing. “See you around.” But Lila knew, with a strange certainty, that she’d be seeing much more of him — and that her days at St. Vincent High was about to change in ways she couldn’t yet imagine.
