Blurb

Thessaly Hale ran from the wolf world because she refused to become a pawn in her father's political game.

Her family had already chosen the Alpha she was supposed to marry—a powerful union designed to strengthen two influential bloodlines. Thessaly wanted none of it. She fled into the human world, buried her identity, and built the life she had always wanted.

Then she met Alden Ward.

Alden was kind, successful, protective, and everything Thessaly believed a husband should be. For years, she thought she had finally escaped her past.

She was wrong.

Because Alden has a secret of his own.

He is a powerful Alpha who was sent years ago to find the runaway heiress and bring her home. Instead, he fell in love with her, abandoned his orders, and made her his wife. He has spent years protecting their marriage—and hiding the truth about who he really is.

Then one reckless night changes everything.

Trying to escape an emotional breaking point, Thessaly meets a mysterious stranger. They share one unforgettable night without exchanging names, never expecting to see each other again.

But the stranger is Nicholas Crowe.

Ruthless Alpha. Billionaire. Alden Ward's sworn enemy.

And Thessaly's fated mate.

Nick wants nothing to do with a bond that threatens to destroy everything. Thessaly refuses to believe fate has any right to decide who she belongs to. And Alden will do whatever it takes to protect the life they built—even if it means keeping one more devastating secret.

But the deeper Thessaly is pulled into the supernatural world, the more the lies begin to unravel.

Her family wants her back.

The man she married has never been who she thought he was.

The mate she cannot escape is the enemy she should never want.

And somewhere behind the growing conflict, someone is quietly manipulating them all.

Thessaly escaped once because she refused to let anyone choose her future.

Now she must face the truth, survive the war closing in around her, and make the most dangerous choice of all:

Will she choose the life she fought to keep—or the man fate says was always hers?

THE ASSIGNMENT
CHAPTER ONE: THE ASSIGNMENT POV: ALDEN The first thing I learn about Thessaly Hale is that she is dangerous. The second is that she does not know it. Neither fact comes from the photograph. The photograph lies on the black table between me and the men who have summoned me here, printed on thick paper that catches the light from the chandelier overhead. She is standing beside a stone wall in the picture, one shoulder turned toward the camera, dark hair falling across her cheek as though someone has interrupted her halfway through walking away. She is not smiling. That bothers me more than it should. Most people smile when they know a picture is being taken. Thessaly Hale does not. She looks away from the camera with the wary indifference of someone who has spent her entire life being watched and has decided she will not perform for anyone anymore. I study the photograph again. Gideon Shaw watches me from the opposite end of the table. As High Alpha, he is the man entrusted with maintaining order between packs when ordinary Alpha authority is no longer enough. His decisions can settle disputes, redraw alliances, and turn private family problems into matters of pack law. He is also the reason I have spent most of my adult life carrying out assignments no one else is willing to touch. “You recognize the name?” “I know the family.” “That isn't what I asked.” I lift my eyes. Gideon sits at the head of the table, his hands folded over a file stamped with the Hale crest. He has spent two decades turning obedience into something that feels less like a choice and more like instinct. The guards outside answer to him. The Alphas beyond this territory respect him. Even wolves who hate his decisions understand what his summons means. I have served under him long enough to know better than to make him repeat himself. “No,” I say. “I don't recognize her.” “That makes two of us.” Beside the wall, Rowan shifts in his chair. He is one of my closest allies within the Ward Pack, a wolf I have trusted in fights, negotiations, and assignments where trusting the wrong person could get us both killed. He has been studying me since I walked into the room, and while his face remains composed, I catch the concern tightening his jaw. Gideon opens the file. “Thessaly Hale disappeared three years ago.” I glance at the photograph again. “Disappeared?” “She left.” “Voluntarily?” “Yes.” The answer comes too quickly. I lean back. Gideon notices. “She was born into the Hale line,” he continues. “Her father is Victor Hale. Her mother’s family has blood ties to an old alliance that several packs would prefer to keep intact. She was raised knowing what was expected of her.” “And she refused.” “She vanished before the arrangement could be finalized.” There it is. The real reason. A political marriage. I look at the photograph again, this time with more attention. Thessaly Hale is young enough to be underestimated and old enough to know exactly what she is refusing. “Who is the male?” Gideon follows my gaze. “The man standing behind her?” He asks. “No. The one reflected in the window.” For the first time, Gideon smiles. “You notice too much.” “It keeps me alive.” “It also makes you useful.” He closes the file. “The man in the reflection is irrelevant. What matters is that Thessaly has built a life somewhere beyond our territory, and every month she remains missing makes the Hale-Reid arrangement more difficult to restore.” “Reid?” I ask. “Vincent Reid.” I know the name. Everyone does. Vincent is the heir to a powerful Alpha line, and the marriage was supposed to bind two influential families together. The disappearance did more than embarrass Victor Hale. It created a weakness other Alphas could exploit. A missing bride becomes a political inconvenience. A missing Hale daughter becomes a threat. “So you want her brought back.” “We want certainty.” Gideon slides a second photograph across the table. This one shows Thessaly from farther away. She is walking down a city street, carrying a paper bag in one hand. There is no wolf territory around her. No guards. No family crest. No Alpha watching from the shadows. She looks ordinary. That is the strangest part. “She has been difficult to locate,” Gideon says. “Our people have searched three cities.” “Then why me?” “Because you know how to disappear.” I almost laugh. It is not a compliment. It is an accusation dressed as one. Gideon knows what I have done for the Ward Pack. He knows how often I have crossed borders without being seen, how many disputes I have settled before they became wars, how many men have trusted me because they mistook restraint for mercy. He also knows I finish assignments. “When do I leave?” Rowan looks at me. “You haven't even heard the conditions.” “I don't need conditions.” “You might.” Gideon opens the file again. “Locate her. Confirm her identity. Bring her home.” He pauses. “Before anyone else finds her.” The room seems smaller. “Anyone else?” “Rumors move faster than wolves. There are already people asking questions.” “Who?” “We don't know.” That answer concerns me more than any name could. Gideon pushes the file toward me. “Your fourth instruction is the most important. Prevent the marriage arrangement from collapsing completely. If she refuses Vincent, we deal with that when she is home. If she has formed attachments elsewhere, you keep those attachments from becoming political problems.” I stare at him. “You want me to retrieve a woman and manage her relationships?” “I want you to protect the interests of the packs.” “That wasn't what I heard.” Gideon's gaze hardens. “You heard exactly what I said.” For several seconds, nobody speaks. My wolf stirs beneath my skin. Not aggressively. Just enough to remind me that every instinct I possess has been bred into me for moments like this. Loyalty. Territory. Obedience. Protection. A pack survives because its members understand what belongs to whom. Because they understand which promises matter. Because sometimes one person's choice has consequences for hundreds. I reach for the file. The photograph comes with it. My thumb catches the edge before it can slide onto the floor. Thessaly. Dark hair. Pale skin. A guarded expression. A woman who has apparently spent three years running from the life chosen for her. I tell myself I understand people like that. They run until someone stronger catches them. Then they remember where they belong. It is a simple assignment. That is what I believe when I stand. That is what I believe when Gideon tells me the Hale family is counting on me. That is what I believe when Rowan follows me into the corridor and catches my arm. “You're taking this too lightly.” I glance at him. “You think I can't find one woman?” “I think you don't understand what happens if she doesn't want to be found.” “Then I'll convince her.” His expression changes. “That's exactly what worries me.” I pull free. “You've known me too long.” “Yes.” Rowan looks toward the closed doors behind us. “That's why I'm warning you.” I leave without answering. Outside, the night has settled over the compound, carrying the distant sounds of wolves calling beyond the boundary. The moon hangs above the trees, pale and watchful. Somewhere beyond those walls, packs are sleeping under the protection of laws older than any of us. I tuck the photograph inside my coat. The paper presses against my chest as I walk toward the waiting car. I have a name. I have a face. I have an order. That is enough. At least, it is enough tonight. I take the photograph out once more before getting inside. Thessaly Hale looks back at me from the paper with that same guarded expression, as if she already knows the person holding her picture has come to take something from her. I study her eyes. I study the stubborn line of her mouth. I study the woman who has managed to disappear from an entire world without leaving enough of a trail for anyone to follow. Then I fold the photograph carefully and slide it into my wallet. She is only a name. A name I have been ordered to find. A name I will bring home.
