The Night Everything Changed
The first thing Elena Rose noticed was the silence.
Blackthorn Pack was never quiet on the night of the Moon Ceremony. Usually, the clearing behind the pack house would be crowded with voices, music, and the smell of food cooking over open fires.
Tonight, however, everyone seemed to be waiting for something.
Or someone.
Elena stood at the edge of the clearing, rubbing her cold palms against the sides of her dress.
“Stop doing that.”
She glanced at her best friend, Mira.
“Doing what?”
“Worrying.”
“I’m not worrying.”
Mira gave her a look.
“You’ve been rubbing your hands together for ten minutes.”
Elena looked down.
She had.
A nervous laugh escaped her.
“Fine. Maybe I’m a little nervous.”
“You have every right to be.” Mira lowered her voice. “Tonight changes everything.”
Elena knew what she meant.
Her eighteenth birthday.
Her first shift.
And, according to the elders, possibly the night she would discover her mate.
The word still felt strange in Elena’s mind.
Mate.
She had grown up hearing stories about it. The magical bond. The instant recognition. The feeling of finally meeting the person the Moon Goddess had chosen for you.
Some girls in the pack dreamed about it.
Elena wasn’t sure she did.
She had watched too many relationships fall apart to believe that a bond could magically solve everything.
Still, she couldn’t deny that a tiny part of her was curious.
“What if I don’t find my mate tonight?” she whispered.
“Then you don’t.”
“And if I do?”
Mira smiled.
“Then you’ll know.”
Before Elena could answer, a deep bell rang across the clearing.
The conversations stopped.
Everyone turned toward the stone platform where the pack elders stood.
At the center was Alpha Kael Blackthorn.
Elena had seen him countless times, but something about him tonight made her look twice.
He stood completely still, dressed in black, his expression unreadable.
At twenty-six, Kael was already one of the most respected Alphas in the region. People lowered their voices when he entered a room. Even older wolves treated him carefully.
Elena had never spoken to him for more than a few seconds.
She didn’t expect that to change tonight.
“Come on,” Mira whispered.
Elena stepped forward.
One by one, the eighteen-year-olds were called onto the platform.
When Elena’s name was announced, her stomach tightened.
“Elena Rose.”
She walked toward the center of the clearing.
Hundreds of eyes followed her.
Her heartbeat grew louder with every step.
Then she felt it.
A sudden warmth spread through her body.
Her breath caught.
Across the clearing, Kael’s head snapped toward her.
Their eyes met.
For one strange second, everything disappeared.
The crowd.
The music.
The elders.
Even Mira.
There was only him.
Kael’s expression changed.
His eyes widened slightly.
Elena couldn’t explain what happened next.
It felt like something inside her had awakened.
A quiet voice seemed to whisper through her mind.
Mate.
Her heart nearly stopped.
Kael took one step toward her.
Then another.
Elena’s lips parted.
“Kael?”
His face had gone completely pale.
He stopped.
For a moment, he simply stared at her.
Then his jaw tightened.
“No.”
The word was so quiet that Elena almost didn’t hear it.
“What?”
Kael looked away.
The warmth inside Elena disappeared.
The clearing suddenly felt freezing.
Kael turned toward the elders.
“I refuse.”
A murmur spread through the crowd.
Elena stared at him.
She couldn’t understand.
“Refuse what?”
Kael finally looked at her.
There was something in his eyes she couldn’t read.
Regret.
Fear.
Maybe even anger.
But whatever it was, it wasn’t the happiness she had imagined.
He stepped forward.
“Elena Rose,” he said, his voice carrying across the clearing, “I reject you as my mate.”
Silence.
Complete, unbearable silence.
Elena heard someone gasp behind her.
Her face burned.
For a few seconds, she couldn’t move.
She wanted to laugh.
She wanted to tell everyone there had been some kind of mistake.
Instead, she stood there staring at the man who had just broken something inside her without even touching her.
Kael’s hands curled into fists.
He looked like he wanted to say something.
But he didn’t.
Elena swallowed hard.
“Why?”
His eyes met hers.
And for the first time that night, she saw something that frightened her.
Not hatred.
Fear.
“Because,” Kael said quietly, “you have no idea who you are.”
Elena’s heart sank.
Before she could ask what that meant, Kael turned away.
And walked off the platform.
Leaving her standing alone in front of the entire pack.
Mira rushed toward her.
“Elena—”
“Don’t.”
Her voice cracked.
She forced herself to breathe.
She wouldn’t cry here.
Not in front of them.
Not in front of him.
Elena turned and walked away from the crowd, holding her dress tightly in one hand.
She had spent eighteen years believing that tonight would reveal the person destined to stand beside her.
Instead, it had revealed something else.
A secret.
And judging by the look on Alpha Kael Blackthorn’s face, he already knew it.
